Jimmy Smith at 2005 IAJE

*Note: A sad note about the passing of Jimmy Smith, Feb. 9 2005 in Scottsdale AZ just one month after receiving NEA Jazz Masters Award. Jon Hammond said about Jimmy Smith: “He played more organ with one hand tied behind his back than many others!” His left side had been compromised for some time but he still out-grooved with right hand. Igor Butman & Gary Walker (WBGO Program Director/Host)

March 5th 2004, Friday morning bright and early at 7 in the morning, Igor Butman and I met at Port Authority Bus Station and I took Igor out to WBGO radio studios to be a special guest on Gary Walker’s morning broadcast. Here they are pictured outside the WBGO www.WBGO.org studios located at 54 Park Place in downtown Newark NJ. Gary had such a good time interviewing his old friend Igor that he stayed on the air 15 minutes past the normal end of his show. Later Igor and I spent a good part of the day kicking around the music stores on W.48th St. where Igor stocked up on supplies for his bigband members back in Moscow before his quartet gig in the evening at Birdland. I’ll be back in Moscow to play with Igor this coming July *link:http://community.webtv.net/GoldenPenMan/BLUESINTHEMOSCOW

Jon Hammond-RESUME

Born: Chicago 1953
Instruments: Organ, Accordion, Piano
Attended: Berklee College of Music, Boston 1974. Currently studying International Business on Internet at City College of San Francisco under Professor Bruce Lilienthal
Languages: English, German

Musician: Jon has played professionally since age 12. Beginning as a solo accordionist, he later played Hammond B3 organ with a number of important San Francisco bands. His all-original rock group “Hades” opened shows for Tower of Power, Quicksilver Messenger Service and Michael Bloomfield. Eddie Money and Barry Finnerty became musical associates.
Moving east, he attended Berklee and played venues as diverse as Boston’s “Combat Zone” and the exclusive Wychmere Harbor Club in Cape Cod, where he was house organist and developed a lasting friendship with House Speaker Tip O’Niel. He also toured the Northeast and Canada with the successful show revue “Easy Living”, and continued his appearances at nightclubs in Boston and New York. Subsequently Hammond lived and traveled in Europe, where he has an entusiastic following.

TV/Video Producer: In 1981 Jon formed BackBeat Productions. Assisted by Lori Friedman (Video by LORI), the innovative TV show became a Manhattan Cable TV favorite. Jon’s “Live on the Street” video style included news events, as well as live music/video clips of Dizzy Gillespie, Paul Butterfield Jaco Pastorious, John Entwistle, Sammy Davis Jr. and Percy Sledge. The weekly show ran uninterupted for 21 years and influenced the broadcasts of David Letterman and others. Billboard Magazine hailed Jon’s show as “The Alternative to MTV”. The Jon Hammond Show can be seen worldwide at various times from www.MNN.org on Channels 56 and 108 in Manhattan.

Media Personality: Host and narrator of his TV show, as well as co-host of numerous radio braodcasts, Jon has defined a musical and personal style that is unmistakable. As Musical Director, Producer and Host of The Jon Hammond Show, Mr. Hammond formed a unique multi-media music group. This spring they will return to Europe to perform at the Frankfurt Musikmesse for 22nd year Jubilee! Hammond has produced a live Sennheiser Microphone CD release, and played throughout Germany, France, Austria, Switzerland and Czech Republic.
October 16th 2002 Mr. Hammond performed in duo together with FangLin, the Chinese accordion champion sensation to inaugurate the new international trade show-MUSIC CHINA at the official opening reception in Shanghai China!

Description: “The Jon Hammond Show” is a funky, swinging Jazz instrumental revue, featuring notable international soloists and reflecting the influences of The Crusaders, Miles Davis, and Jimmy Smith. The show has universal appeal.

Members of the “Jon Hammond Show” house band have included David “Fathead” Newman, Bernard “Pretty” Purdie, Alex Foster and Cornell Dupree.

BOB POPYK of AFM’s INTERNATIONAL MUSICIAN Magazine profiles JON HAMMOND in his monthly motivational column: FOCUS !

Focus
International Musician, July 2005
Whatever Happened to Those Jazz Clubs on Every Corner?
I live in a city of about 250,000 people. Vinnie Falcone, a member of Local 369 (Las Vegas, NV) who played and conducted for Frank Sinatra, and now works with Steve & Eydie and Robert Goulet, used to live and work here.
That was about 35 years ago.
When he wasn’t selling pianos for a local Hammond/Steinway dealer, he probably played in almost every club within a 20-mile radius of here at one time or another. There were tons of them.
Falcone and I talked about this just the other day. We came up with the names of the clubs that used live music five to seven nights a week. They could be found on almost on every street corner. Now they are all gone. Jazz groups, blues bands, singles, duos, and trios were always working; and if you came up with a new group you could, in all likelihood, find a club owner who would give you a shot. Unfortunately, that is no longer the case. It’s tough to make a living as a jazz musician today. But É you can make a living if you work at it. Like most things, I think it’s just a matter of wanting it badly enough.
One thing I’ve found out from the readers of this column is that musicians seem to be divided into two segments: 1) musicians who won’t play anything they don’t like or any venue that doesn’t suit them; and 2) musicians who need to work because they need to pay their bills and find all kinds of ways to fill their calendar.
I still get occasional letters from readers who say that it’s not their fault that they are not getting enough work. I guess then the logical question would be: whose fault is it?
I really appreciate the insight of those musicians who have creative and interesting ways of finding work, and I sympathize with the musicians who need to get out there and find gigs just to pay the rent. I don’t have all the answers, but a lot of our fellow AFM members have some very good answers.
One in particular is Jon Hammond, a member of Local 802 (New York City) and Local 6 (San Francisco, CA). Hammond has found a way to get his own TV show broadcast on Time Warner Cable and RCN cable access, he has produced a CD that gets airplay on jazz radio stations around the world, and he plays at Music Performance Fund (MPF) gigs on a regular basis on both coasts. He has booked himself on several European tours, played jazz clubs in Germany and many other locations in Europe, year after year, and has found a way to obtain instruments from national manufacturers for endorsements, advertising, or trial.
Hammond is also a perfect example of “success being in the mind of the beholder.” When he put together his first self-booked German tour 20 years ago, he saved up enough money to fly to Europe on Pakistan Airlines. He only had $50 in his pocket when he landed there. Hammond came home 10 months later with $150 in his pocket. He was able to pay for rent, food, and everything he needed during his time on the road in Europe. He wasn’t rich, but he was happy–and he firmly believes it was also a terrific learning experience.
Over the ensuing years Hammond has performed with some of the world’s top jazz musicians, and he now lives in midtown Manhattan and plays any and every job he can, on either coast. Money is not his prime motivation. He just loves to play. He makes it work, through sheer hard work, and he prides himself on being a union musician.
If you are a jazz musician, perhaps you might like to ask him some questions of your own, and share some ideas. Hammond is very approachable. His phone number is (212) 967-1858. Ask him about how he put together his TV show, how he successfully gets radio airplay, how he lands MPF gigs, and how, through it all, he always keeps money coming in to pay the rent. He’s found a way to do state-funded programs in prisons, nursing home gigs, and casual dates in clubs. (He’s scrambled so much over the years that his new CD is called Late Rent.) Hammond does not play for free. He finds ways to get paid. He agrees that the only thing you get out of playing a free gig is the opportunity to do another free gig.
I know jazz musicians can have a tough struggle, and it’s true that there simply are not as many places to play as there once were. But that is not to say that jazz players can’t find work.
Venues have changed, clubs have closed, but people still want to listen to cool sounds. Jazz festivals in major cities are still popular. Radio stations still offer jazz programs. PBS stations showcase jazz artists in their programming. It’s just not as easy to make money at it as it once was, but you can still make a living.
I don’t have all the answers. I think Hammond has some. I bet if you brainstorm with your fellow AFM members who specialize in jazz, you can go one better and come up with a lot of other ideas yourself. A positive attitude is obviously going to play a big part, but if you want to play jazz and make a few bucks, there are certainly ways to do it. It really is a matter of wanting to be a jazz musician badly enough.

There I am with Pico, when I played on his show about his life working at the legendary Star Club with the Beatles, Rattles, Chuck Berry and others on the Reeperbahn. This guy was the original deal. He is still there working on the Deutsche Bundesbahn and living on the Hein Hoyer Str. in St. Pauli. Amazing guy and life story. I met some of the originals playing there at the Delphi Music Theatre.

First trip to Paris in 1981!

There I am taking care of business in my room at the 5 star L’hotel in Paris France in 1981. This is the place where Oscar Wilde lived out his last days. A favorite low key place where the Rolling Stones and others like to stay. There is no sign indicating it is a hotel. You will see only the golden ram’s head above the door on Rue de Beaux Arts in St. Germain on the left bank.

Dinner for 1 downstairs at L’hotel!

The tree grows right up through the ceiling, and it is like a Fellini movie in there at night. I enjoyed every bite of that meal…perfectly content to enjoy my own company there in my Armani suit. I used to dress up every day for no particular reason back in those days!

On the Job at John’s Place in Saarbucken Germany!

This was one of my first steady gigs in Germany in 1991, at a place called John’s Place in Saarbrucken on Bleich Str. It is very near the French border there, and there was a healthy mix of German and French people in the after hours place. I am wearing my lucky tie there and my father’s white shirt for good luck!

Scene from the stage at Jazzkeller Frankfurt 1992!

That’s how it looked from the stage of my show at the famous Jazzkeller in Frankfurt. The show was sponsored by Philip Morris Tobacco. I don’t smoke, but they gave me cartons of cigarettes to give away, all my friends in Germany were overjoyed to receive free cigarettes! The place was packed…Herb Ellis is sitting in the front row. That’s my friend Tino holding the video camera at right.

Broadcasting on pirate Radio Tomate Paris France!

There I am speaking to the French on legendary pirate Radio Tomate in a secret location in Paris. The pirates there actually were squatting in the building. They were very creative…the electricity was brought in and phone lines from unknown sources. The place was manned 24 hours a day. This was in 1981 when the Socialist government was still in power.

Onstage at original legendary FILLMORE!

There I am on the bandstand of the original Fillmore Auditorium with bandmates Barry Finnerty and James Preston. The original location where I had seen so many fantastic shows as a teenager…right there at corner of Geary Blvd. & Fillmore S.F., Cal.
Took me 30 years to get the gig there!
We were on the bill with The Sons of Champlin (James is also drummer of Sons) Friday June 4th, 1999. The Fillmore was closed for a long time, but it was lovingly restored by the BGP people in 1994 as a tribute to founder Bill Graham. I was there at the opening party, invited by my old friend Bob Barsotti. It was a great party! Bob doesn’t forget his old friends….he sent us a beautiful bottle of Moet Champagne in a bucket of ice with a nice card to our dressing room when we played this gig. I will never forget that gig. The audience was very responsive, and it fulfilled every expectation to be there playing on that very special stage.

Flower Power…1969!

16 years old, and I was a super freak..free as a bird!
I feel sorry for those who never got to experience the free spirit of those times. We had very little to worry about. Everything was cheap, there was no Aids and the ladies seemed to like my curly hair. That year I was made in to a cartoon character in a comicbook about Natural Hair Care put out by Rolling Stone Magazine. I thought I would be retired by the age of 25…boy, was I wrong!

1971 HADES, original rock band

HADES means HELL, and we were 4 little devils. There we are pictured in the grave yard in El Cerrito California. L. to R. Steve Wright, Jim Thorsen, Dave Danza, JH. All our material was original and we used to practice 5 days a week in a garage where our road crew lived. We had a truck with Hades license plates, a good sound system, 2 roadies and a manager, Jerry Figgoni. This was one of the tightest bands out of the East Bay. We played very often at a hot rock club in those days called, The Longbranch Saloon on San Pablo Ave. in Berkeley. We came very close to some big success with Hades, but then it finally broke up.

Jon Lord of Deep Purple Speaking about Hammond Sk1 and Sk2 with Jon Hammond in Frankfurt at Musikmesse

Rest In Peace Jon – Jon Hammond

Jonathan Douglas Lord, rock and classical musician and composer, born 9 June 1941; died 16 July 2012
He is survived by his wife, Vicky, and their daughter, Amy; and a daughter, Sara, by his first wife, Judith, from whom he was divorced.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2012/jul/16/jon-lord?newsfeed=true
Jon Lord
“Organist who infused Deep Purple with classical influences, helping make them one of the world’s biggest rock bands”
‘We’re as valid as anything by Beethoven,” declared Jon Lord of his band, Deep Purple, in an interview with the New Musical Express in 1973. Lord, who has died aged 71 after suffering from pancreatic cancer, was not merely adopting a rebellious stance. An accomplished classical composer as well as rock musician, he believed with some justification that his group’s music was as profound in structure and as significant in cultural impact as any work from the symphonic canon. At the time, Deep Purple were among the world’s biggest rock bands, having built an enormous fanbase on the strength of their classically influenced songs, which lent further weight to Lord’s statement.

Born in Leicester, Lord studied classical piano from the age of five. In his teens, the then-new rock’n'roll and R&B movements made a deep impression on him, in particular the music recorded by blues pianists and organists such as Jimmy McGriff and Jerry Lee Lewis. The contemporary combination of Hammond B3 and C3 organs with Leslie speakers appealed to him, and this became an instrumental setup that remained integral to Lord’s signature keyboard style for the rest of his career.

In 1959, he moved to London to pursue acting, which he studied at the Central School of Speech and Drama. He played the piano and Hammond organ in clubs to pay the bills, initially with a jazz band called the Bill Ashton Combo and then with Red Bludd’s Bluesicians, featuring the vocalist Art Wood. While recording occasional sessions (he contributed keyboards to the Kinks’ 1964 hit You Really Got Me), Lord pursued pop success in the Art Wood Combo, who later renamed themselves the Artwoods and appeared on TV. I Take What I Want was the group’s only charting single.

Lord discovered his trademark sound when he formed Santa Barbara Machine Head, which also featured Wood’s brother and future Rolling Stone, Ronnie Wood. The key to this group’s success was its powerful, organ- and guitar-driven formula, which pointed at the future musical recipe of Deep Purple, and also the meeting of Lord and the bassist Nick Simper. The duo were the backbone of Deep Purple, who formed when the businessman and manager Tony Edwards invested in the new group and auditioned the cream of London’s young talent – the guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, the singer Rod Evans and the drummer Ian Paice among them. This quintet formed Purple’s first lineup in 1968.

Deep Purple spent the following eight years on a path that took them around the world on several occasions (in later years, they had a private jet), playing the world’s largest stadiums and issuing a series of classic LPs – In Rock (1970), Fireball (1971), Machine Head (1972) and Burn (1974) among them. Personnel came and went, but Lord and Paice remained constant members until the group’s dissolution amid a haze of drug addiction and exhaustion in 1976.

Of the great British rock bands of the 70s, only Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and the Stones were able to operate on as grand a scale: unlike any of those groups, Deep Purple took regular time out to indulge in classical projects initiated and directed by Lord. The most notable of these was the live Concerto for Group and Orchestra, recorded at the Royal Albert Hall in 1969.

It was this equal passion for rock bombast and classical finesse that made Lord such an unusual musician. During Deep Purple’s glory days, he often infused the songs with classical influences, as in the song April from the group’s eponymous album in 1969. His organ playing, which often counterpointed Blackmore’s virtuoso lead guitar, was unique and often copied.

After the split, Lord formed a group with the rock singer Tony Ashton and Deep Purple’s ex-drummer Paice entitled Paice, Ashton & Lord. They released one album, Malice in Wonderland, in 1977. He then joined Whitesnake, the band formed by Deep Purple’s last lead singer, David Coverdale. This group, not to be confused with the 1980s reincarnation that played stadium rock and met with huge success, was an earthy, blues-rock band in which Lord’s organ playing was an essential element. His stint in Whitesnake ended when he rejoined a reformed lineup of Deep Purple in 1984 alongside Blackmore, Paice, the singer Ian Gillan and the bassist Roger Glover.

Many solo projects and collaborations came during and between Lord’s membership of these bands, including Before I Forget (1982), which featured classical piano music; a commission to compose the soundtrack of Central Television’s 1984 series The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady; and guest spots on albums by rock luminaries such as Lord’s Oxfordshire neighbour George Harrison and Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour.

Eight more years of recording and tours followed before Lord felt he had had enough of life on the road. In a letter to his bandmates in 2002, he requested that Deep Purple take a year off. When this request was declined, he amicably left the group. Solo projects followed, including a collaboration in 2004 with sometime Abba singer Anni-Frid Lyngstad, and the formation of a blues band, Hoochie Coochie Men, three years later. In 2010, Lord was made an honorary fellow of Stevenson College, Edinburgh, and the following year he was awarded an honorary doctorate of music by the University of Leicester.

Frankfurt am Main — They know me well in this Deutsche Bundespost by the Frankfurt Bahnhof! – Jon Hammond

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deutsche_Bundespost

The Deutsche Bundespost (German federal post office) was created in 1947 as a successor to the Reichspost (German imperial post office). Between 1947 and 1950 the enterprise was called Deutsche Post (German post office). Until 1989 the Deutsche Bundespost was a state-owned company.
The Bundespost was developed according to a three-stage principle common in public administration in the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG). The upper stage consisted of the federal ministry for the post office and telecommunication system. The middle stage consisted of regional directorates and national post office management in West Berlin, with certain central bureaucracies (post office technical central office, telecommunication engineering central office, postal administration social office, and post offices) on an equal footing. Finally, the lower stage consisted of the actual post offices, postal giro (akin to a checking account)and savings bank offices, and telecommunication offices.
The legal basis for the administrative activity of the Bundespost was the postal administration law (Postverwaltungsgesetz, abbreviated PostVwG). A central goal of public administrative policy after 1924 was financial self-sufficiency. Political goals, however, often superseded this goal. According to the PostVwG, the federal postal system was to be administered “according to the principles of the policy of the FRG, in particular trade, economic, financial and social policies” and “the interests of the German national economy.”
The Deutsche Bundespost was the largest employer in the Federal Republic. In 1985 it employed 543,200 people.
In the first post office reform (July 1, 1989), the Bundespost was divided into three divisions (also called public enterprises):
Deutsche Bundespost Postdienst – postal service
Deutsche Bundespost Telekom – communications service
Deutsche Bundespost Postbank – postal bank
The central authorities remained as described above. The divisions were later privatized in the second post office reform (January 1, 1995), resulting in the creation of the following:
Deutsche Post AG from the postal service
Deutsche Telekom AG from the communications service
Deutsche Postbank AG from the postal bank
The federal ministry for post office and telecommunications (Bundesministerium für Post und Telekommunikation) retained oversight responsibility for postal services and telecommunications. After the dissolution of that ministry on 1 January 1998, those tasks were taken over by a new federal network regulatory agency (Bundesnetzagentur, formerly RegTP) under the federal ministry for economics and technology. Other functions (such as the issuance of postage stamps) were taken over by the federal ministry of finance. Some telecommunications functions (including BOS radio) were turned over to the federal ministry of the interior.
For certain official and legal purposes (including certain financial, medical and other services for former postal civil servants), a “federal institution for post and telecommunication” (Bundesanstalt für Post und Telekommunikation) was created. — at Deutsche Post FFM.

New York NY — Guggenheim Museum on a nice summer day – Jon Hammond
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solomon_R._Guggenheim_Museum
The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (often referred to as “The Guggenheim”) is a well-known art museum located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan in New York City. It is the permanent home of a renowned and continuously expanding collection of Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, early Modern and contemporary art and also features special exhibitions throughout the year. The museum was established by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation in 1939 as the Museum of Non-Objective Painting, under the guidance of its first director, the artist Hilla von Rebay. It adopted its current name after the death of its founder, Solomon R. Guggenheim, in 1952.
Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, the cylindrical museum building, wider at the top than the bottom, was conceived as a “temple of the spirit” and is one of the 20th century’s most important architectural landmarks. The building opened on October 21, 1959, replacing rented spaces used by the museum since its founding. Its unique ramp gallery extends from just under the skylight in the ceiling in a long, continuous spiral along the outer edges of the building until it reaches the ground level. The building underwent extensive expansion and renovations from 1992 to 1993 (when an adjoining tower was built) and from 2005 to 2008. The museum’s collection has grown organically, over eight decades, and is founded upon several important private collections, beginning with Solomon R. Guggenheim’s original collection. The collection is shared with the museum’s sister museums in Bilbao, Spain, and elsewhere.
Early years
Solomon Guggenheim, guided by his art adviser, German painter Hilla Rebay, began to collect works by nonobjective artists in 1929. Guggenheim first began to show his collection in his apartment, and as the collection grew, he established the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation in 1937. The foundation’s goal was the “promotion and encouragement and education in art and the enlightenment of the public.” It was endowed to operate one or more museums; Solomon Guggenheim was elected its first President and Rebay its Director.

Museum under construction in photo taken on Nov. 12, 1957
In 1939, the Guggenheim Foundation’s first museum, “The Museum of Non-Objective Painting”, opened in rented quarters at 24 East 54th Street in New York City and showcased art by early modernists such as Rudolf Bauer, Rebay, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee and Piet Mondrian. During the life of Guggenheim’s first museum, Guggenheim continued to add to his collection, acquiring paintings by Marc Chagall, Robert Delaunay, Fernand Léger, Amedeo Modigliani and Pablo Picasso. The collection quickly outgrew its original space, and so in 1943, Rebay and Guggenheim wrote a letter to Frank Lloyd Wright asking him to design a permanent structure for the collection. It took Wright 15 years, 700 sketches, and six sets of working drawings to create the museum. From 1943 to early 1944, Wright produced four different sketches for the initial design. One of the plans (scheme C) was a hexagonal shape as opposed to the other three circular sketches. It was the only design of the four to have level floors for the galleries without the use of one ramp continuing around the building. At the same time, Rebay was searching for sites for the museum. She selected the museum’s site at the corner of 89th Street and Fifth Avenue, overlooking Central Park.

A 1966 U.S. postage stamp honoring Frank Lloyd Wright, with the Guggenheim visible in the background.
In 1953, the foundation’s collecting criteria expanded under its new director, James Johnson Sweeney. Sweeney rejected Rebay’s dismissal of “objective” painting and sculpture, and he soon acquired Constantin Brâncuşi’s Adam and Eve (1921), followed by works of other modernist sculptors, including Jean Arp, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti and David Smith.[2] Sweeney reached beyond the 20th century to acquire Paul Cézanne’s Man with Crossed Arms (c. 1899).[2] In that year, the foundation also received a gift of 28 important works from the Estate of Katherine S. Dreier, a founder of America’s first collection to be called a modern art museum, the Société Anonyme. Dreier had been a colleague of Rebay’s. The works included Little French Girl (1914–18) by Brâncuşi, an untitled still life (1916) by Juan Gris, a bronze sculpture (1919) by Alexander Archipenko and three collages (1919–21) by German Hanoverian Dadaist Schwitters. It also included works by Calder, Marcel Duchamp, El Lissitzky and Mondrian.[3] Among others, Sweeney also acquired the works of Alberto Giacometti, David Hayes, Willem de Kooning and Jackson Pollock.[4]
Sweeney oversaw the last half dozen years of the construction of the museum building, during which time he had an antagonistic relationship with Frank Lloyd Wright, especially regarding the building’s lighting issues.[5][6] The distinctive cylindrical building, turned out to be Wright’s last major work, as the architect died six months before its opening. From the street, the building looks like a white ribbon curled into a cylindrical stack, wider at the top than the bottom, displaying nearly all curved surfaces. Its appearance is in sharp contrast to the typically rectangular Manhattan buildings that surround it, a fact relished by Wright, who claimed that his museum would make the nearby Metropolitan Museum of Art “look like a Protestant barn.” Internally, the viewing gallery forms a helical spiral ramp climbing gently from ground level to the skylight at the top.
On October 21, 1959, ten years after the death of Solomon Guggenheim and six months after the death of Frank Lloyd Wright, the Museum first opened its doors to large crowds. The building instantly polarized architecture critics, though today it is widely praised. Some of the criticism focused on the idea that the building overshadows the artworks displayed inside, and that it is difficult to properly hang paintings in the shallow, windowless, concave exhibition niches that surround the central spiral. Prior to its opening, twenty-one artists signed a letter protesting the display of their work in such a space.
Thomas M. Messer succeeded Sweeney as director of the museum (but not the foundation) in 1961 and stayed for 27 years, the longest tenure of any of the city’s major arts institutions’ directors. When Messer took over, the museum’s ability to present art at all was still in doubt due to the challenges presented by continuous spiral ramp gallery that is both tilted and has non-vertical curved walls. It is difficult to properly hang paintings in the shallow, windowless exhibition niches that surround the central spiral. Canvasses must be mounted raised from the wall’s surface. Paintings hung slanted back would appear “as on the artist’s easel”. There is limited space within the niches for sculpture.

The skylight in the center of the museum
Almost immediately, in 1962, Messer took a risk putting on a large exhibition that combined the Guggenheim’s paintings with sculptures on loan from the Hirshhorn Museum.Three dimensional sculpture, in particular, raised “the problem of installing such a show in a museum bearing so close a resemblance to the circular geography of hell”, where any vertical object appears tilted in a “drunken lurch” because the slope of the floor and the curvature of the walls could combine to produce vexing optical illusions. It turned out that the combination could work well in the Guggenheim’s space, but, Messer recalled that at the time, “I was scared. I half felt that this would be my last exhibition.” Messer had the foresight to prepare by staging a smaller sculpture exhibition the previous year, in which he discovered how to compensate for the space’s weird geometry by constructing special plinths at a particular angle, so the pieces were not at a true vertical yet appeared to be so. In the earlier sculpture show, this trick proved impossible for one piece, an Alexander Calder mobile whose wire inevitably hung at a true plumb vertical, “suggesting hallucination” in the disorienting context of the tilted floor.
The next year, Messer acquired a private collection from art dealer Justin K. Thannhauser for the museum’s permanent collection. These 73 works include Impressionist, Post-Impressionist and French modern masterpieces, including important works by Paul Gauguin, Edouard Manet, Camille Pissarro, Vincent van Gogh and 32 works by Pablo Picasso.
In 1992, the building was supplemented by an adjoining rectangular tower, taller than the original spiral, designed by the architectural firm of Gwathmey Siegel & Associates Architects.[18] By that point, the building had become iconic enough that this augmentation of Wright’s original design was itself controversial.
In October 2005, Lisa Dennison, a longtime Guggenheim curator, was appointed director of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York. Dennison resigned in July 2007 to work at the auction house Sotheby’s.
From October 2005 to February 2008, Thomas Krens remained director of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, having won a decisive victory over billionaire philanthropist and board member Peter Lewis. A significant contributor to the Guggenheim Foundation, Lewis resigned in 2005 in a dispute with the board over the direction and leadership of the Foundation. Despite this, Krens and Lewis nevertheless continue to agree in describing the building itself as “the most important piece of art in the collection.”
In February 2008, Krens stepped down as the Director of the Guggenheim Foundation, but remains an advisor to the Guggenheim’s international expansion projects. The search for a new Director, who will head both the New York museum and the Foundation was recently completed with the Board’s appointment of Richard Armstrong—formerly director of Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Museum of Art—as its fifth director.
Exterior restoration

Guggenheim Museum exterior after the 3-year renovation
Between September 2005 and July 2008, the Guggenheim Museum underwent a significant exterior restoration.
In the first phase of this project, a team of restoration architects, structural engineers, and architectural conservators worked together to create a comprehensive assessment of the building’s current condition that determined the structure to be fundamentally sound. This initial condition assessment included:
the removal of 11 coats of paint from the original surface, revealing hundreds of cracks caused over the years, primarily from seasonal temperature fluctuations
detailed monitoring of the movement of selected cracks over 17 months
impact-echo technology, in which sound waves are sent into the concrete and the rebound is measured in order to locate voids within the walls
extensive laser surveys of the exterior and interior surfaces, believed to be the largest laser model ever compiled
core drilling to gather samples of the original concrete and other construction materials
testing of potential repair materials.
Much of the interior of the building was restored during the 1992 renovation and addition by Gwathmey Siegel and Associates Architects. The 2005–2008 restoration primarily addresses the exterior of the original building and the infrastructure. This includes the skylights, windows, doors, concrete and gunite facades and exterior sidewalk, as well as the climate-control. The goal will be to preserve as much significant historical fabric of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum as possible, while accomplishing necessary repairs and attaining a suitable environment for the building’s continuing use as a museum.[24]On September 22, 2008, friends and supporters of the Guggenheim gathered in New York to mark the completion of the 3-year renovation of the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Museum. New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg officiated at the celebration that culminated, just after sunset, with the premiere of artist Jenny Holzer’s tribute For the Guggenheim, a work commissioned in honor of Peter B. Lewis, who was a major benefactor in the Museum restoration project. Other supporters of the $29 million dollar restoration included the Board of Trustees of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, and the Department of Cultural Affairs of the City of New York. Additional support was provided by the State of New York and MAPEI Corporation. The museum was registered as a National Historic Landmark on October 6, 2008.
Significance in popular culture

The Guggenheim interior
The building has become a cultural icon and can be seen widely throughout popular culture. It is featured in Matthew Barney’s The Cremaster Cycle, Bye Bye Birdie, Men in Black, When in Rome, Downtown 81, Ugly Betty and prominently in The International, where a major shootout occurs in the museum. (In fact, a life-size replica of the museum was built for this scene.. The film, Mr. Popper’s Penguins has a sequence where the penguins cause a disturbance entering the museum, wander to the top of the gallery structure and slide down the entire spiral structure to the ground floor. The New Yorker has included the museum multiple times on its cover and cartoons.
The Marvel Comics Guide to New York City (2007) by Peter Sanderson points out that the Guggenheim museum played a part in Daredevil (Marvel Comics), vol. 1, #61 (1970), What If (comics) (featuring Conan the Barbarian), vol. 1, #13 (1979), and Thor (Marvel Comics) #447-48 (1992).

The Redwood Valley Railway is a ridable miniature railroad in Tilden Regional Park near Berkeley, California. It was established in 1952 by Erich Thomsen, and has expanded to 1.25 miles of track and over 160,000 passengers a year.
The railroad uses 5″ scale model live steam locomotives on a 15 in (381 mm) narrow gauge track.
Locomotives
The Number 2- An 0-4-0 Gasoline-Hydraulic locomotive “Juniper”
The Number 4- A 2-4-2 Columbia “Laurel”
The Number 5- A 4-4-0 American “Fern”
The Number 7- A 2-6-2 Prairie “Oak”
The Number 11- A 4-6-0 Ten-Wheeler “Sequoia”
Rolling stock
The Redwood Valley Railway maintains a dozen or so wooden gondolas, built similar to those found on 36″ narrow-gauge lines in the American West. The gondolas, equipped with seating for up to eight adults, are the mainstay passenger rolling stock for this operation. The RVRY also owns three stock cars which have been specifically built to carry passengers as well. These are often favorites with small children, although a full-sized adult can comfortably fit inside.
Other equipment includes a boxcar, extra convertible gondolas, which can either haul passengers or satisfy M.O.W. needs.
The RVRy. owns numerous four-wheel maintenance-of-way cars known as “jimmies”, which have specialized uses such as welding, tie replacement, or carrying ballast.
The RVRy. also rosters a single flatcar, built as a high school shop project by one of the crew in the 1970s. This rugged flatcar has seen thousands of uses, and is one of the most versatile cars on the railroad.
Unique among the roster of cars is a coal gondola, once used to carry extra coal for the #4. Coal was used up until the mid-1970s when the #4 was converted to fuel oil. The coal gondola, with its higher sides, is infrequently used. It currently carries a few dozen metal folding chairs for the annual meet.
A favorite with both young and old is the caboose. Based on a D&RGW 36″ gauge prototype, this “short” center cupola caboose has graced the end of most revenue trains for over 30 years.
[edit]Future Projects

Parts for a 2-4-4 Forney and a 2-6-0 exist, but currently remain unassembled. Plans for a second caboose and a lavish, scale (down to the furniture, wallpaper, and bar with tiny glasses) business car are in the works.
As of mid-2010 the boiler for the #13, the aforementioned 2-6-0 has been manufactured. Not to be confused with a visiting GSP&P #13 from the Glenwood Southpark and Pacific.
The #9, a brand-new diesel-hydraulic switching locomotive is in the planning and development stages and should look somewhat similar to the temperamental but faithful #2. The #9 will have a diesel engine instead of a gasoline engine, and will be built as a heavier and more powerful two-axle diesel locomotive, similar to <25ton American industrial locomotives like those found on narrow gauge operations around the country.

Drummer, Educator Wade Barnes Dies at 57
Was CEO/President of the Brooklyn Four Plus One
By Jeff Tamarkin

Wade Barnes, a drummer, composer, producer, bandleader, arranger, educator and executive, passed away March 3 a age 57. The cause and place of death were not reported. Barnes was founder of the Brooklyn Four Plus One, Inc., a nonprofit whose stated mission, according to the organization’s website, is “to bring the highest quality of America’s classical music [jazz] to all ages, races, ethnic groups and socioeconomic levels.”

Originally, the site states, the Brooklyn Four Plus One, Inc. “was a band organized by drummer and educator Wade Barnes in the mid 1990s. The band was comprised of native Brooklynites deeply rooted in America’s musical culture. The ensemble conducted performances, clinics and symposia for a variety of audiences.” The group was later renamed the Brooklyn Repertory Ensemble (B.R.E.) and is now comprised of 17 members and plays for schools and arts organizations, particularly in under-served communities.

Barnes, who received multiple music degrees from colleges and universities, is credited, according to his official biography, with “facilitating a holistic conception which incorporates the entire history of American music.” He led Wade Barnes and the Bottom Line (a 10-member ensemble) and Wade Barnes and Unit Structures. During his career he also performed with “Doc” Cheatham, Earle Warren, Dicky Wells, Howard McGhee; Jimmy Garrison, Bob Cranshaw, Archie Shepp, Sonny Fortune; Jon Faddis and others. In addition, Barnes created clinics, workshops and curricula for the New York City Public Schools.

Barnes appeared on numerous recordings with several ensembles.

R.I.P. Charly Hosenseidl the late great leader of Frankfurt Musikmesse Nachruf: Charly Hosenseidl http://www.tastenwelt.de/nachruf_charly_hosenseidl.0.html
L to R: Dr. Peters, Cordelia von Gymnich, Sabine Nold, Wilhelm Peter Hosenseidl bei seiner Verabschiedung als Musikmesse-Objektleiter (2003). – Jon Hammond

New York NY — Local 802 Rehearsal Room – smokin’ drummer Michael Pratt on the Pratt Brothers Big Band today – check this band out folks! Jon Hammond
*visit their website:
http://jazzcomposersservice.com/?page_id=48 — with Michael Pratt at Associated Musicians of Greater New York, Local 802 AFM

Since its formation in 1980, The Pratt Brothers Big Band has backed such musical artists as Fran Warren, Zoot Sims, Al Grey and Roy Eldridge. They have also performed a tribute to the great arranger, Fletcher Henderson, funded by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

More and more radio stations are once again playing the music of the Swing Era. Co-bandleader, Dean Pratt has waited all his life for this golden opportunity. Along with fellow leader, Michael Pratt, Dean’s brother, this 16-piece band features the best musicians New York has to offer. Many are former sidemen of the Harry James, Maynard Ferguson, Woody Herman, Gerry Mulligan and Buddy Rich bands, and are currently featured on Broadway and in the New York studios.
The band plays music from the libraries of Harry James, Count Basie, Buddy Rich, and Woody Herman, but also many pieces of original music written and arranged for the PBBB.

No other big band today captures so authentically the spirit and drive that made the best bands of the Swing Era so compelling, and no band possesses such a remarkably deep and diverse book, comprising charts by such classic Big Band arrangers as Duke Ellington, Fletcher Henderson, Jimmy Mundy, Neal Hefti and Ernie Wilkins to more progressive arrangers such as Bob Brookmeyer, Bill Holman, Thad Jones, Francy Boland, Don Piestrup and Mike Abene—music to dance to, as well as music to listen to, no matter what the occasion. cont.. — with Michael Pratt at Associated Musicians of Greater New York, Local 802 AFM.

New York NY — Local 802 Rehearsal Hall – Gary Morgan’s PanAmericana!
Incredible Band and Music! – Jon Hammond

http://www.panamericanajazz.com/bio.php
Gary Morgan and PanAmericana! Bios:

Gary Morgan was born in Santiago, Chile, but moved to Toronto, Canada at the age of 2. Tuned to music from an early age, he digested the popular music of the day, country music, Top 40, blues, big bands, rock & roll and rhythm & blues. Formative events in his early life included hearing the bands of Lionel Hampton, Count Basie and Illinois Jaquet up close, “these guys were really having fun!”, and hearing Salsa for the first time, booming from a record shop in the Times Square subway station, on a Christmas visit to New York with his parents.

Another memorable experience from his early teens was attending the fabled Jazz at Massey Hall concert of Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie et al. Memorable because he couldn’t stand the music — “too many notes” for his tender ears, and he lost his part time grocery job for deserting his fellow workers.

He started instrumental music in high school, wanted the drums, but was persuaded to take up the saxophone instead by his teacher. After a mediocre academic career, he settled down to practicing and freelanced in Toronto for 15 years, playing saxophone and woodwinds on TV variety shows, recordings, movie soundtracks, jingles and musical theater.

During this period Gary appeared with various musical artists including Tony Bennett, Ella Fitzgerald, Nancy Wilson, Dionne Warwick, Otis Redding, Gladys Knight, (Little) Stevie Wonder, Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Woody Herman, Jose Feliciano, Quincy Jones, Lionel Hampton, Oscar Peterson, Ray Charles, Rob McConnell, Buddy Rich, Benny Goodman and Henry Mancini.

Gary also studied theory, harmony and composition privately, as well as electronic music. He began composing and arranging music for various ensembles he was performing with, and leading his own small jazz groups. Signature memories from that era included his first trips to Cuba and Brazil. Brazil, in particular, has been a dominant influence on Gary’s music:
“From the moment I first stepped off the plane, I was seduced by the warmth and poetry of the culture and the people. In musical terms, the great variety of rhythmic traditions, which are part of the DNA of every Brazilian, the harmonic subtlety of the popular and art music, but most importantly the rich melodic tradition of choro, going back 100 years or more, adds a dimension that seems lacking in our popular music in America.”

In 1980, sensing a need for change, Gary received a Canada Council grant to study jazz composition at the Berklee School of Music in Boston, studying with the legendary Herb Pomeroy, among others. After a productive year, he packed his bags and migrated to New York, whereupon he switched to the bass, to better experience the perspective of the rhythm section.

In 1989, Gary was invited to join the BMI Jazz Composers Workshop under the guidance of Bob Brookmeyer and Manny Albam, and later Jim McNeely, where he gained more expertise writing for large ensembles, met other similarly inclined composers and acquired practical experience in the logistics of organizing and promoting concerts.

Gary has been the recipient of composition grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts and is a member of the American Federation of Musicians, Local 802.

PanAmericana! began in New York in 1997 as a compositional vehicle for Gary, as well as a repertory orchestra for modern Cuban and Brazilian classics. The recent emphasis in the band has been the orchestration and arrangement of some of the wealth of material emerging from the contemporary composers of Brazil, who do not have much exposure in this country, including such major talents as Egberto Gismonti, Milton Nascimento, Hermeto Pascoal, Jovino Santos Neto and Itibere Zwarg. This is not your father’s big band. Although Gary is steeped in the big band tradition and sound, PanAmericana! represents an attempt to expand, through orchestration, his rhythmic, melodic and harmonic ideas.

PanAmericana! is based in New York City, and plays a variety of venues in the New York and New Jersey area including Birdland, Makor, Nuyorican Poets Cafe, the Garage, Trumpets Jazz Club, the Baha’i Center, as well as concerts in Central Park, Brooklyn Museum. The personnel includes many of the finest New York area latin jazz musicians.

In 2004, Gary formed an all-star Canadian orchestra, which is based in Toronto, and is available for dates in Eastern Canada. — with Norbert Stachel at Associated Musicians of Greater New York, Local 802 AFM

Jane Dornacker (October 1, 1947 – October 22, 1986) was an American rock musician, actress, and comedienne turned traffic reporter.
In 1986, while working for WNBC 660 AM Radio in New York City (which became WFAN in 1988), Dornacker was aboard during two unrelated crashes of the helicopters leased to WNBC. She survived the first crash, but was killed in the second crash into the Hudson River, which occurred as she was in the middle of a live traffic report. Her death came shortly after that of her husband, Bob Knickerbocker, orphaning their 16-year-old daughter. The NTSB investigation determined the cause of the fatal crash to have been use of improper parts and poor maintenance on the part of Spectrum Helicopters of Ridgefield Park, New Jersey.

Music and acting
Dornacker was the tall lead singer (Leila), keyboardist, and songwriter of the 1970s/1980s San Francisco “tack” rock group Leila and the Snakes. Pearl Gates and Pamela Wood provided supporting vocals. Their repertoire included “Rock and Roll Weirdos,” “Pyramid Power” and a spoof version of Peggy Lee’s “Is That All There Is?” Gates later left (and took the band with her) to form Pearl Harbor and the Explosions. Guitarist Miles Corbin went on to form the surf instrumental band the Aqua Velvets.
Dornacker provided lead vocals on “Christopher Columbus” (1978), a song by R. Crumb & His Cheap Suit Serenaders. With Ron Nagle, she co-wrote the humorous hit song “Don’t Touch Me There” for The Tubes. The song was sung by Re Styles and appeared on The Tubes’ second studio album, Young and Rich (1976), and was released as a 7″ single in the US, the UK, and Holland. The B-side was “Proud to Be an American”. Jane had also toured with The Tubes as a backing singer and dancer.
Dornacker was also an actress. She appeared in playwright Sam Shepard’s jazz opera Inacoma at San Francisco’s Magic Theatre (1977) and was featured in other works by the Overtone Theatre. She appeared in The Stand-Up, Anita Sperm and as the mysterious Nurse Murch in the film The Right Stuff.
[edit]Stand up comedy and radio
Dornacker developed a successful career as a stand-up comic on the San Francisco circuit and did her first work as a traffic reporter in the early-mid-1980s for KFRC, a popular Top 40 radio station. She worked with Don Rose, who was that station’s morning disc jockey at the time. She was noted for her exceptionally fast speech, so fast it required concentration to understand her. As she did traffic, she would tell her daughter Naomi to get up and get to school. She moved to New York City to become a much-loved, raspy-voiced “trafficologist” and “Jane-in-a-plane.” After Dornacker died, Rose arranged several tributes to establish a college fund for Naomi.
Dornacker survived one helicopter crash only to die in a second helicopter crash in the same year. On April 18, 1986, Dornacker was reporting from a WNBC helicopter over the Hackensack River in New Jersey when the aircraft crashed into the river. She and the pilot survived and were able to swim to shore.
[edit]Death

On October 22, 1986, at 4:44 PM, while Dornacker was giving one of the station’s N-Copter traffic reports during the Joey Reynolds Show on WNBC Radio in New York City, the Enstrom F-28 helicopter she was reporting from plunged into the Hudson River from an altitude of roughly 75 feet. On her final radio broadcast she was giving a report of an accident involving a tractor-trailer and a car as well as a car fire. She also stated that the outbound Holland Tunnel was heavy with traffic and that the Lincoln Tunnel was much better with traffic and a car fire. Dornacker was starting her report for incoming New Jersey traffic when the helicopter suffered mechanical failure in mid broadcast and crashed. Her last words were “Hit the water, hit the water, hit the water!”
The F-28 helicopter nose-dived, struck the top of a chain link fence at a river pier, crashed into the Hudson River very near to the Manhattan shore and sank in 15 to 20 feet of water. Both occupants were trapped for nearly 10–15 minutes before help arrived. Dornacker died on her way to Saint Vincent’s Hospital. She was 39 years old. Her pilot and the only other occupant, Bill Pate, was severely injured but survived.
In the subsequent investigation, the NTSB found that the sprag clutch that was installed in the helicopter, which was on lease to WNBC Radio by Spectrum Helicopters of Ridgefield Park, New Jersey, was a military surplus part which was not designed for use in a civilian aircraft, and that the part had not been adequately lubricated. It directly led to a mid-air seizure of the main rotor blades. The staff of WNBC were so appalled at the revelation of this malpractice at Spectrum Helicopters that at one point they threatened to resign en masse.[citation needed]
[edit]Final crash transcript
Aircheck of the incident
“ Joey Reynolds: “Okay, here’s Jane Dornacker now in the N-Copter”
(NBC chimes)
Dornacker: “Thank you very much, Joey. There was indeed an accident southbound on the Major Deegan at the Mosholu Parkway, an accident, a serious accident involving a tractor trailer and a car. It has been pushed off to the shoulder, but now watch out there now, because another flatbed truck is going to have to come to clear it, so yield right-of-way. Northbound on the BQE, we’ve spotted that disabled vehicle in the right-hand lane before the Kosciuszko, not causing much of a backup, but further northbound there on the BQE, traffic is very heavy, past the Kosciuszko all the way over to the LIE. The outbound Holland Tunnel extra-heavy for you right now; earlier there was a car fire at Hudson and Canal Street. It has been cleared out, except heading to New Jersey, the outbound Lincoln Tunnel looks a lot better for you. In New Jersey…
(helicopter engine overspeed)
Hit the water! Hit the water! Hit the water!
(Brief static followed by five seconds of dead air)
Reynolds: Okay, we’re gonna play some, uh, some music here I think. Find out what’s going on with the helicopter. Something happened there. It’s, uh, quarter of 5; 16 ’til 5 on WNBC, on the Joey Reynolds show. We’re taking an N-Copter report from Jane Dornacker; let’s check in and see how they’re doing there, and then we’ll come right back at you.
(Hip to Be Square plays)
Reynolds: I hope nothing happened with Jane. We had, uh, a helicopter report, from the N-Copter. Of course, you know, once before, we had this happen. A few months ago, she went down in the, uh, in the drink. Not she, I mean, she has a… pilot. Jane is, uh…
Other voice: Well, until we find out what’s going on, we’ll just…
Reynolds: Jane was up there just now giving us a report, and sometimes it just gets cut off, too, you know. It’s just an electronic thing. But, uh, this time she said, uh, “hit the water,” or something like that. So we’re going to find out what’s going on there, so stay tuned. We hope nothing… say a little prayer, hope nothing’s, nothing’s wrong. That’s really a… (deep breath) that’s a hard, hard job.

[edit]Aftermath

Dornacker’s then 16-year-old daughter, Naomi, received $325,000 in a settlement with owner Spectrum Helicopters of Ridgefield Park, NJ, and the maker of the helicopter. Naomi’s father Bob Knickerbocker died shortly before her mother’s death.
All the New York stations grounded their traffic helicopters for a few days after that accident.
A memorial concert in celebration of Jane took place at the Warfield Theatre in San Francisco on Saturday, November 22, 1986.
There is a memorial to her in Wayne, New Jersey, where Dornacker and her family lived.
Shortly after the incident several on-air interviews with WNBC Radio staff describe the incident and their feelings in detail, including how other news organizations “pumped news” into the WNBC Radio newsroom as they were all in shock. Joey Reynolds broke down on-air when talking about her now orphaned child. WNBC played other interviews with friends and recordings of her talking about the first helicopter crash earlier that same year. Her music was also played during these tribute shows including “Don’t Touch Me There” which she wrote for The Tubes. —

Drummer, Educator Wade Barnes Dies at 57
http://jazztimes.com/articles/29681-drummer-educator-wade-barnes-dies-at-57
By Jeff Tamarkin

— with Bob Cunningham at Associated Musicians of Greater New York, Local 802 AFM

The Latest Prank From TSA Airport Inspectors — Ha Hah Ha, very funny!
I traveled yesterday with my instrument in a very special case made by Gator company that has the latest TSA approved lock which I do not use, I never lock my cases ever since 9/11. Often the TSA people do not close the latches properly – 4 latches on the case, I get it back from a flight and 1, 2, or even 3 have not been latched properly, so I have taken to putting green gaffers tape over the latches and I put a very friendly respectful letter inside the case to the TSA to ask them kindly to be careful to close the latches properly. Last night I got home with my case, the TSA Agent decided to lock the case up with his TSA Key, I am not carrying the key since I routinely do not lock the case. No other key will work and I have a lot of keys –

New York NY — God bless the B&H people for letting me use one of their TSA keys to unlock my flight case that the smart-aleck TSA agent locked up when he inspected it, so I didn’t have to break it open. New York NY — It’s a little bit blurry the image, but here is the National Panasonic tube table radio that I hand-carried from California to my friend Mike’s Cupcake Cafe on Ninth Avenue NYC, now installed and rockin’ the cafe!
My girlfriend wrapped it good with bubble-wrap and TLC, it made the trip fine – Vintage National Panasonic RE-784A AM FM Tube Radio – this radio is from the California Historical Radio Society / CHRS. Mike is an avid radio listener, I’m sure he’ll have “The Blues Hour” from WBGO 88.3 FM blaring over it at 3PM tomorrow and I’ll drop in for a cup of coffee and enjoy the sound and good strong coffee! He also played with John Coltrane in their early Philadelphia years. Bailey is also known as “The King of Organ Trio Drummers”. In 1978, Bailey released a harmonica album called “So In Love” (Trio Records) in Japan which received rave reviews. His latest project “Blueprints of Jazz Vol.3 featuring Donald Bailey” was issued on the Talking House record label in 2009. Other former residents include Marlon Brando, actress and singer Mistinguett, and writer Jorge Luis Borges, who said it seemed to have been “sculpted by a cabinet maker”.[1] The hosting of Borges in this hotel was not by chance: when he was nine, he translated Wilde’s “The Happy Prince” into Spanish and since then he had become a big fan of his work; Borges wanted to die where the writer of his childhood had also died.” — at Hotel L Hotel Rue Des Beaux Arts

Hamburg Germany — Behind the wheel of Jens’ Classic Ford T-Bird – Jon Hammond
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Thunderbird
The Thunderbird (“T-Bird”), is an automobile manufactured by the Ford Motor Company in the United States over eleven model generations from 1955 through 2005.

When introduced, it created the market niche eventually known as the personal luxury car.
The Ford Thunderbird began life in February 1953 in direct response to Chevrolet’s new sports car, the Corvette, which was publicly unveiled in prototype form just a month before. Under rapid development, the Thunderbird went from idea to prototype in about a year, being unveiled to the public at the Detroit Auto Show on February 20, 1954. Like the Corvette, the Thunderbird had a two-seat coupe/convertible layout. Production of the Thunderbird began later on in 1954 on September 9 with the car beginning sales as a 1955 model on October 22, 1954. Though sharing some design characteristics with other Fords of the time, such as single, circular headlamps and tail lamps and modest tailfins, the Thunderbird was sleeker and more athletic in shape, and had features like a faux hood scoop and a 150 mph (240 km/h) speedometer hinting a higher performance nature that other Fords didn’t possess. Mechanically though, the Thunderbird could trace its roots to other mainstream Fords. The Thunderbird’s 102.0 inches (2,591 mm) wheelbase frame was mostly a shortened version of that used in other Fords while the car’s standard 292 cu in (4.8 L) Y-block V8 came from Ford’s Mercury division.[4]
Though inspired by, and positioned directly against, the Corvette, Ford billed the Thunderbird as a personal luxury car, putting a greater emphasis on the car’s comfort and convenience features rather than its inherent sportiness.[4] Designations aside, the Thunderbird sold exceptionally well in its first year. In fact, the Thunderbird outsold the Corvette by more than 23-to-one for 1955 with 16,155 Thunderbirds sold against 700 Corvettes.[5] With the Thunderbird considered a success, few changes were made to the car for 1956. The most notable change was moving the spare tire to a continental-style rear bumper in order to make more storage room in the trunk, and an optional porthole in the removable roof was offered and often selected by buyers. However, the addition of the weight at the rear caused steering issues. The spare was moved back to the trunk in 1957 when the trunk was restyled and made slightly larger. Among the few other changes were new paint colors, the addition of circular porthole windows as standard in the fiberglass roof to improve rearward visibility, and a 312 cu in (5.1 L) Y-block V8 making 215 horsepower (160 kW) when mated to a 3-speed manual transmission or 225 horsepower (168 kW) when mated to a Ford-O-Matic 2-speed automatic transmission; this transmission featured a “low gear”, which was accessible only via the gear selector. When in “Drive”, it was a 2-speed automatic transmission (similar to Chevrolet’s Powerglide).
The Thunderbird was revised for 1957 with a reshaped front bumper, a larger grille and tailfins, and larger tail lamps. The 312 cu in (5.1 L) V8 became the Thunderbird’s standard engine, and now produced 245 horsepower (183 kW). Other, even more powerful versions of the 312 cu in (5.1 L) V8 were available including one with two four-barrel Holley carburetors and another with a Paxton supercharger delivering 300 horsepower (220 kW). Though Ford was pleased to see sales of the Thunderbird rise to a record-breaking 21,380 units for 1957, company executives felt the car could do even better, leading to a substantial redesign of the car for 1958. — at Kieler Straße 271, D-22525 Hamburg

Jon began his musical career at age 12 in the San Francisco Bay Area playing organ and accordion in bands and solo engagements, first recording studio dates 1968 when he met Robert Moog who personally delivered the Moog III to San Francisco Radical Laboratories where Jon was working at the time and jamming daily with members of Quicksilver Messenger Service, he next joined original rock band Hades with which he played until moving East to attend Berklee.

Playing 7 nights a week in Boston’s notorious Combat Zone next lead to touring with successful show band Easy Living and then became house organist at the exclusive Wychmere Harbor Club Cape Cod MA where he played private parties for Tip O’Neill Speaker of The House. Returning to SF for a reunion concert in 1980 with Eddie Money and members of Tower of Power, next Jon moved to Europe where he lived and played for a number of years, still playing annually where he has an enthusiastic following. Jon began hosting his own TV show “The Jon Hammond Show” in 1984 and is now in 27th year on cable TV in Manhattan and heard daily on KYOU Radio HammondCast Show with regular appearances at international trade shows.

San Francisco windmill restoration marks milestone

By ASSOCIATED PRESS

SAN FRANCISCO — Crews restoring the Murphy Windmill in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park are celebrating a milestone.

Crowds watch as workers place a 64-ton dome on the historic landmark Murphy windmill during its repair in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, Monday, Sept. 12, 2011. The windmill was constructed in 1905 and is one of the largest windmills in the world. It originally served to irrigate the park. The dome was repaired in Holland. The flags below the American and San Francisco flags are the Dutch and Irish flags.

The windmill’s 68-ton copper dome was placed back on top of the structure on Monday after undergoing nearly a decade of restoration.

The work is part of a multi-million dollar project to bring the six-story windmill, which once pumped water to the rest of the park, back online. Built in 1905, the windmill languished for decades until the restoration work began in 2002.

The project is expected to be completed by the middle of 2012, when the windmill’s sails and gears should be back on and the area around it landscaped.

The project is being funded by public and private money. — at Dutch Windmill

San Francisco CA — The entrance to Baker Beach – Jon Hammond
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baker_Beach
Baker Beach is a public beach on the peninsula of San Francisco, California, U.S.. The beach lies on the shore of the Pacific Ocean to the northwest of the city. It is roughly a half mile (800 m) long, beginning just south of Golden Gate Point (where the Golden Gate Bridge connects with the peninsula), extending southward toward the Seacliff peninsula, the Palace of the Legion of Honor and the Sutro Baths. The northern section of Baker Beach is “frequented by clothing-optional sunbathers”. As such it is considered a nude beach.History
Baker Beach is part of the Presidio, which was a military base from the founding of San Francisco by the Spanish in 1812 until 1997. In 1904, it was fortified with disappearing gun installations known as Battery Chamberlin, which can still be viewed today. When the Presidio was decommissioned as a U.S. Army base, it became part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, which is administered by the National Park Service.
From 1986 to 1990, the north end of Baker Beach was the original site of the Burning Man art festival. In 1990, park police allowed participants to raise the traditional large statue but not to set it on fire, since the beach enforces a limit on the size of any campfires. Subsequent Burning Man events have taken place in Black Rock Desert, Nevada.
A fatal shark attack occurred on Baker Beach on May 7, 1959[5] when 18-year old Albert Kogler Jr. was attacked by a great white shark while he was 15 feet deep in water. This was the only shark attack recorded on Baker Beach.
Large outcrops of serpentine cliffs occur along the Pacific coast near Baker Beach. When rising from the land surface, serpentine produces a low-calcium, high-magnesium soil that can allow for rare species of plants to develop in the vicinity. This may explain the presence of Hesperolinon congestum (the Marin Dwarf Flax, a threatened plant) in surrounding areas — at Baker Beach.

Boston
IT’S a hot day on LaGrange Street. Across from the gaudy Club New Orleans, on the shady side of this street in Boston’s notorious “combat zone,” Arthur Stephens takes a small paring knife out of his pocket. He carefully cuts through the black threads of time. “Six and seven-eighths,” he says quietly. In his hand is a beige man’s hat. No measuring, no guessing the size. He knows hats, this hat, any hat. The knife cuts the threads holding the old, black hatband. It falls to the floor.

“This is a good beaver hat,” says Mr. Stephens, twirling it over the knuckles of one hand. He will spend the next hour or so in loving restoration of another man’s favorite hat.

For 54 years, inside a narrow LaGrange Street shop darkened by time and steam, and filled with the rakishness of hats on pegs everywhere, Stephens has plied the almost forgotten art of a hatter. Like a poet polishing verbs, Stephens makes, restores, and repairs fine hats. During the half-century he has been motivated by the axiom “A man doesn’t looked dressed unless he wears a hat.”

“My sisters were hat trimmers,” he says proudly, ready to nurture just about any stained, drooping hat into new sheen and bearing. “My father was a hatter, and my brothers were hatters, too. See, I like what I’m doing. You gotta like what you’re doing. I’m 80 going on 81.

Arthur Stephens is the only bona fide, art-for-the-sake-of-art hatter left in Boston. Once there were dozens. Ernesto Marrone has been a customer for 10 years. “You can’t get this kind of service anywhere else,” he says, “not even in New York. I wear hats because I grew up in an old Italian neighborhood where hats were customary.”

Long before Stephens bought the shop on LaGrange, a man named Hand first opened it on a downtown Boston street. The year was 1860, the year Abraham Lincoln was elected President, and Mr. Hand proclaimed his shop “Hand the Hatter.”

The shop thrived down one century to another, satisfying Bostonian gentlemen who wore homburgs, panamas, top hats, trilbies, derbys, westerns, fedoras, and even boaters. And when the young and ambitious Stephens bought the shop in 1934, he kept the name.

Today, above the door, slightly weathered and melancholy, a black-and-white sign still says, “Hand the Hatter.”

The small shop window – protected by a steel grate – is so dusty and gray there is no seeing through it. One step up and through the open door and into the musty shop, and you have entered a time warp sliced from a faded calendar, circa 1930, with hats, hats, and more hats.

“You walk in here and say, `How come all this junk is here?”’ says Stephens, a small man with rounded shoulders and a gruff, sentimental voice. “But everything is ready for any kind of hat. You never know when you’re going to use this stuff.”

“This stuff” lying about is a Noah’s ark of the hatter’s craft. Shelves and tables full of wooden hat blocks, shelves full of wooden flanges to shape brims, a 40-year-old hissing copper boiler (steam for steaming the hats), ancient cans of “luring” grease (to bring out the sheen of hats), an old “ironing” machine that heats and shapes the crown of hat while it spins slowly on a block, and off in one corner a bulbous, heated “sand” machine (a flannel bag filled with heated beach sand) to lower over a hat on a flange to shape or reshape the brim.
“I used to work until 2 in the morning,” says Stephens, recalling the heady, quicker pace of the 1930s. “Saturdays, Sundays. I’d go out to eat, take a shower at a hotel, come back here, and go to work again. I could knock off maybe 40 to 50 hats a day. Today if I do eight or 10 I’m doing a big day’s work.”

Stephens acknowledges that it was probably a hatless President named John Kennedy who helped take the steam out of the men’s hat business. That and all the vets returning from World War II as men who refused to wear hats anymore. Add the long hair of men in the 1960s, and hats had a dim future.

“Kennedy didn’t wear a hat,” says Stephens, “and everybody stopped wearing them. Men are wearing all different kinds of hats now, but still not like they used to. Do I wear hats? Sure. I keep a couple in my car.”

He pauses by the ironing machine, watching the blocked brown hat turning as the hot “iron” moves automatically and slowly around it, squeaking all the way. On a shelf a fan pushes the hot air around.

His voice lowers. “Way back I made hats for Jimmy Durante,” he says. “His valet used to come here and get them. He’d say, `Jimmy needs a couple of hats,’ and I’d know just what he wanted. Basil Rathbone used to buy hats from me, too.”

A new hat from Stephens will cost from $125 to $150. A restoration begins about $20 and often ends there, no matter how long it takes. “I never really check the time, to tell you the truth,” he says. “I like the work, and when it’s done, it’s done.”

In the late afternoon a customer of 35 years comes in: a stocky, older man named Mitch with a straw hat needing the brim smoothed and stiffened. Stephens repairs the hat in minutes, using the sand machine and some deftly applied glue.

“I bought my first custom-made hat here in 1950,” says Mitch, standing at the small counter near an enormous old cash register with a hand crank. “I got one he made me a few years ago, and a couple of others,” says Mitch. He says he would like another, a light gray this time.

He and Stephens strike an accord. A price of $85, with $40 down. Stephens fills out an order. Mitch peels off two $20 bills on the counter. “I don’t want you pushing yourself,” he says to Stephens. They both laugh and agree that three weeks should be long enough to fashion the hat. They shake hands. Mitch says warmly, “I need you. Don’t push yourself on this.”

Minutes later, a young man in a leather vest and tie enters and picks up a custom-made hat, a tan, narrow-brimmed trilby. Stephens packs the hat in a new Stetson hat box and tosses in a cluster of small red and yellow feathers for the hatband. When the young man leaves, Stephens says: “If you’re any kind of a businessman, you throw a man a few feathers.”

Late in the afternoon he sits in one of the four old chairs just inside the front door in a pensive mood. “These are all old customers now,” he says quietly. “They know I won’t sell them a bad hat. If I had said a $100 for the hat, Mitch would have paid it. No arguments.” — at Combat Zone

Lydia Pense vocalist of Cold Blood on Jon Hammond’s daily radio program HammondCast on KYOU Radio 1550 AM. Hear Lydia speak with Jon about how the band got it’s name and subsequently Cold Blood was one of the first rock groups to be signed by Bill Graham’s Fillmore Records. The story of how legendary singer producer Donny Hathaway came to produce Lydia and Cold Blood and talking about the musicians living and deceased. Lydia’s newest album is entitled ‘Transfusion’ – http://www.HammondCast.com/
Thank you, posting this interview was great and heartwarming to this Lydia Pense fan from the 60s when Cold Blood came out. Got the original album, several cds which I have played to scratch mode. No one matches her intensity and soulfulness. she had that clear quality that Janis sometimes didn’t bring because of the vocal differences, but many thanks. Love it!

THANK YOU! I love Lydia & Cold Blood.
ChrisOtheBigC
In early 70′s I saw Cold Blood in Cleveland at the Agora. I saw Tower of Power many times in the area then as well. I formed a band called “Shop Talk” a cold blood song, all we did was cold blood and tower of power in Cleveland Akron area. IT was a lot of fun. No one comes close to Lydia is strength, soul, vigor, passion, and she is buatiful to boot, a very attractive woman.
jonathonlallo in reply to unlimited93065 (Show the comment)
Cold Blood may not have gotten the same kind of widespread recognition that many of their Bay Area peers received back in the day, but that still doesn’t excuse the fact that they were a force to reckon with. As for Lydia, she truly is one of the great soul singers of our time and aging ever so gracefully at 60. Her and Bettye Lavette are definitely proving a point that one can survive the ravages of the industry by just being strong-willed and committed to their craft. PROPS!!!

I grew up around her till I was about 6 years old. I am Sandy McKee’s son. Her voice was and is still amazing. I listen to the original Cold Blood music all the time.
Wonderful to see Lydia is still hanging tough!

I saw Cold Blood for the first time back in 1970 when they shared a double bill with Tower of power in a small club in Oakland. Lydia is head and shoulders above Janis Joplin.
In 2006 I saw a reformed Cold Blood and just like back in the day, they were extremly funky and greasy with Lydia sounding as great as ever. Check out their recent new album and a recently issued live recording from circa 1973 that is a fine representation of how they sounded at their peak of popularity

Frankfurt Germany — Jazz Kneipe Berlinerstr. 70 – Jon Hammond Band

http://www.jonhammondband.com/

I played 207 gigs in the famous JAZZ KNEIPE Frankfurt at Berlinerstr. 70 until Regina the boss finally closed the doors and moved to Spain a few years ago, usually in Duo, sometimes as Trio but more often than not as Solo. This was a special occasion because my bandmates from California came over so I had them on the gig with addition of Sgt. Al Wittig of U.S. Air Force on tenor, James Preston of Sons of Champlin band drums, Barry Finnerty gtr., myself Jon Hammond at XB-2 Hammond organ. This was a very special place frequented by all the musicians after there gigs. A 5 hour gig until wee hours of the morning, Live Music 7 days a week in rotation with musicians like Piano George, Izio Gross, Wilson de Oliveira and members of HR Bigband. Regina introduced me to Tony Lakatos the Hungarian tenor saxophonist who I play with still today. The club was not large but it had a great atmosphere and was always a safe place to hang out until as late as 5AM. Sadly the Jazz Kneipe is still shuttered there on Berlinerstr. directly behind the Frankfurter Hof Hotel. All musicians tip their hat when they pass by. There’s a lot of music in those walls!

Jazz Kneipe Berlinerstr. 70 – Jon Hammond Band

Pocket Funk as heard on The Jon Hammond Show TV program on MNNTV and on Late Rent album – Behind The Beat http://behindthebeat.com/2004/12/jon-hammond-late-rent/ by Steve Rosenfeld “Jon Hammond says “the fingers are the singers.’” The latest CD from this exceptional and soulful Hammond organist is the proof. “Late Rent” draws on decades of great recording sessions and top live performances to showcase his own playing and many top jazz and funk artists. It shows why the Hammond organ is one of the most enduring electric instruments and why Hammond is one of its best players.”
