Behind The Beat http://behindthebeat.com/2004/12/jon-hammond-late-rent/ by Steve Rosenfeld “Jon Hammond says “the fingers are the singers.’” The latest CD from this exceptional and soulful Hammond organist is the proof. “Late Rent” draws on decades of great recording sessions and top live performances to showcase his own playing and many top jazz and funk artists. It shows why the Hammond organ is one of the most enduring electric instruments and why Hammond is one of its best players.”

“Following an altercation between sets, Morgan’s common-law wife Helen More (a.k.a. Morgan), shot him. The injuries were not immediately fatal, but the ambulance service was reluctant to go into the neighborhood where the club was located. They took so long to get there that Morgan bled to death. He was 33 years old”

Bob Cranshaw tells an incredible story about the recording date with Lee Morgan on the classic album The Sidewinder.

Hamburg Germany Elbe Tunnel (1911)
Down under the Elbe River in the Old Elbe Tunnel – Jon Hammond Light ears away
Elbe Tunnel Wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elbe_Tunnel_(1911)

Old Elbe Tunnel or St. Pauli Elbe Tunnel (German: Alter Elbtunnel (coll.) or St. Pauli Elbtunnel (official name)) which opened in 1911, is a pedestrian and vehicle tunnel in Hamburg, Germany. The 426 m (1,398 ft) long tunnel was a technical sensation; 24 m (80 ft) beneath the surface, two tubes with 6 m (20 ft) diameter connect central Hamburg with the docks and shipyards on the south side of the river Elbe. This meant a big improvement for tens of thousands of workers in one of the busiest harbours in the world.

Rest In Peace Donald Byrd – these images from my coverage of Beacons in Jazz Concert tribute to Cab Calloway *in middle image with host MC Bill Cosby, Donald in the middle, also in back of the late great alto player educator Arnie Lawrence – May 7th 1990, RIP Donald Byrd – Jon Hammond
Donald’s Wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donald_Byrd

Donaldson Toussaint L’Ouverture Byrd II (December 9, 1932 – February 4, 2013) was an American jazz and rhythm and blues trumpeter. A sideman for many other jazz musicians of his generation, Byrd is best known as one of the only bebop jazz musicians who successfully pioneered the funk and soul genres while simultaneously remaining a pop artist.
Donaldson Toussaint L’Ouverture Byrd II
Born December 9, 1932
Origin Detroit, Michigan, United States
Died February 4, 2013
Genres Bop
Hard bop
Funk
Soul
Instruments Trumpet
Associated acts Pepper Adams, Gigi Gryce, Jackie McLean, Hank Mobley

Byrd attended Cass Technical High School. He performed with Lionel Hampton before finishing high school. After playing in a military band during a term in the United States Air Force, he obtained a bachelor’s degree in music from Wayne State University and a master’s degree from Manhattan School of Music.
While still at the Manhattan School, he joined Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, as replacement for Clifford Brown. In 1955, he recorded with Jackie McLean and Mal Waldron. After leaving the Jazz Messengers in 1956, he performed with many leading jazz musicians of the day, including John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Thelonious Monk, and later Herbie Hancock.
Byrd’s first regular group was a quintet that he co-led from 1958-61 with baritone saxophonist Pepper Adams, an ensemble whose hard-driving performances are captured “live” on At the Half Note Cafe. In June 1964, Byrd jammed with jazz legend Eric Dolphy in Paris just two weeks before Dolphy’s death from insulin shock.
In the 1970s, Byrd moved away from the hard-bop jazz idiom and began to record jazz fusion and rhythm and blues. He teamed up with the Mizell Brothers (producer-writers Larry and Fonce) for Black Byrd in 1973. It was highly successful and became Blue Note Records’ highest-ever selling album. The title track climbed to No. 19 on Billboard′s R&B chart and reached the Hot 100 pop chart, peaking at No. 88. The Mizell brothers’ follow-up albums for Byrd, Street Lady, Places and Spaces and Stepping into Tomorrow, were also big sellers, and have subsequently provided a rich source of samples for acid jazz artists such as Us3. Most of the material for the albums was written by Larry Mizell.
In 1973, he created The Blackbyrds, a fusion group consisting of his best students. They scored several major hits including “Happy Music” (No. 3 R&B, No. 19 pop), “Walking In Rhythm” (No. 4 R&B, No. 6 pop) and “Rock Creek Park”.
In 1994, Byrd appeared on the Red Hot Organization’s compilation album, Stolen Moments: Red Hot + Cool. The album, meant to raise awareness and funds in support of the AIDS epidemic in relation to the African-American community, was heralded as “Album of the Year” by Time Magazine.
He has taught music at Rutgers University, the Hampton Institute, New York University, Howard University, Queens College, Oberlin College, Cornell University and Delaware State University.
In addition to his master’s from Manhattan School of Music, Byrd has two master’s degrees from Columbia University. He received a law degree in 1976, and his doctorate from Columbia University Teachers College in 1982.
In September 2009, he was named an artist-in-residence at Delaware State University.[1] Byrd lives in Teaneck, New Jersey.[2]

“Celebrity guests
Honey’s became a happening place on Oahu, with other Hawaiian musicians stopping in for jam sessions. Ho began to play at various spots at Hawaii, and soon, he was packing places such as the Coconut Grove in Hollywood and the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas.
Stars such as Lucille Ball, Sammy Davis Jr. and Frank Sinatra were known to be in the audience for Ho’s shows.
Ho also became a television star, and hosted the “The Don Ho Show” on ABC from 1976-77.”..

Hamamatsu Japan — i-Real demo is un-real! (by Toyota)
future is now – http://www.toyota-global.com/innovation/personal_mobility/i-real.html – Jon Hammond
i-REAL
Personal mobility that expands opportunities to meet “REAL” people, enjoy nature, and make traveling freer, more fun, and more comfortable.

The new personal mobility i-REAL was developed with the intention of increasing opportunities to enjoy encounters with a variety of people and objects by enabling movement. Development of this new type of mobility was unconstrained by conventional car manufacturing concepts.
The i-REAL was developed in order to decrease the environmental impact and energy consumption associated with individual daily travels. It runs on electricity up to 30 kilometers (approx. 18.6 miles) per charge. It is a three-wheeled vehicle, with two wheels in the front and one in the back, and is capable of switching driving modes between walking mode and cruising mode.

Hammond Jr. – Youth Organ rocks! Jon Hammond
Product Description
The Hammond organ youth!

The contents are it-oriented in earnest in appearance though they are pretty!
It is with nine draw bars, percussion function and can give surprisingly real organ sound! Even if a keyboard becomes insufficient, there is no problem if I connect it to the keyboard that there is much number of more keyboards because MIDI IN is carried!
To Hammond square, 259 tones have sound effects to be usable in a drama or a picture-story show built-in.
It is the keyboard which anyone can enjoy from “an adult to a child”♪
14 ensemble tones that it was selected carefully.
It “is great that but children play that I want to add a wind instrument to an instrumental ensemble”…Hammond square solves such a trouble. I can play the tone of the base musical instrument that a musical performance musical instrument and the sum musical instrument of the performance hard to please, transportation are great with a keyboard easily, and width of the ensemble opens.
In the tone that I repeat a draw bar tone, and is solid.
Can put the draw bar tone on a bus tone and an ensemble tone, and the thickness of the sound increases, and is solid; sound. When the harmonic overtone ingredient of the Hammond organ is piled up, each sound becomes rich.
It is equipped with a tone of the bus master. I can use it as a base musical instrument to be able to carry.
When a low tone was solid, was solid-looking, and the ensemble was finished; is played. Therefore I will use Hammond square as a base musical instrument. I connect Hammond square to a base amplifier and a keyboard amplifier, and it is changed quickly by a base musical instrument when I utilize a bus master tone and a bus tone. Ensemble becomes a more substantial thing.

Jon Hammond speaking with Neil Portnow, President of NARAS – in Hollywood CA at ASCAP Expo

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neil_Portnow
Neil’s Wiki Neil R. Portnow (born 1948, New York City) is the current president of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS). Portnow was formerly the vice-president of the West Coast division of Jive Records.
Portnow grew up in Great Neck, New York. He played bass guitar in a high school rock band, The Savages,[1] who released a 45rpm record “Cheating on me”/”Best thing you ever had”[2] on Red Fox Records that did not achieve serious commercial success, but was subsequently included in a compilation of garage bands.[3]
He graduated from The George Washington University in 1971.[4] He started out as a record producer and music supervisor. He worked with RCA Records as staff producer, as vice-president of A&R at Arista and EMI America . He was senior vice-president and then president at 20th Century Records.
He started working with Jive Records in 1989. He oversaw the expansion of their West Coast operation, making Jive a groundbreaking, successful label. Jive thrived under his leadership as Vice-President of the West Coast division and spearheaded the careers of some of the biggest acts of the late 1990s and early 2000s. He worked alongside Jive’s president Clive Calder who ran Jive’s parent company, the Zomba Label Group.
Portnow worked as music supervisor on three films: Permanent Record (1988), A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child (1989), and Wired (1989), in which he also appeared briefly as a bandleader.

Frankfurt Germany — “Go Green” forget the tour bus, push your gear to the gig and ride the rails – Jon Hammond

*Note: Excerpt from article in April 2008 ALLEGRO Magazine of Local 802 Musicians Union in honor of Earth Day April 22 and Environmentalism “Beat On The Street”: I am about to go over to Germany for my annu- al music tour with my Hammond organ so I’d like to tell you my way of doing a “green tour” that I have perfected. In the past, a Hammond B3 organ weighed 425 pounds (without the Leslie speaker) so it was not possible for me to take one to Europe. In 1991, I got the first really portable model. It was one of the first 10 prototypes of the Ham- mond-Suzuki XB-2, with multi-voltage for any- where in the world. I flew over to Germany with it on Pakistan Airlines. I found that by using a Kart-A-Bag Super 600 heavy-duty luggage cart with “stair slides” (like what UPS and FedEx uses), I could hoist it up on to any train or bus. I traveled all over Europe this way, and was pic- tured doing it eventually in a magazine ad for Kart- A-Bag for quite a while. They had a contest going for a long time where they would give away one “Ham- mond Super 600 Kart-A-Bag” every month from a drawing. I jokingly refer to it as my “tour bus.” I see a lot of bands touring with big tour buses and they look real nice and comfy but they also burn a lot of fuel. With my technique I ride on the high speed trains in Germany, the local trains, up and down in the Metro of Paris and in Prague on the street cars. One way to go green is to skip the tour bus altogether. — at Frankfurt (Main) Hauptbahnhof

Pocket Funk as heard on The Jon Hammond Show TV program on MNNTV and on Late Rent album – Behind The Beat http://behindthebeat.com/2004/12/jon-hammond-late-rent/ by Steve Rosenfeld “Jon Hammond says “the fingers are the singers.’” The latest CD from this exceptional and soulful Hammond organist is the proof. “Late Rent” draws on decades of great recording sessions and top live performances to showcase his own playing and many top jazz and funk artists. It shows why the Hammond organ is one of the most enduring electric instruments and why Hammond is one of its best players.”

Recommendation from Jon Hammond The GKPE-49-TSA Flight Case for Sk1 Ultra-Portable Organ

Jon Hammond — When you travel with your instruments as much as I do, you want to have a solid protective flight case for your instrument,

for the new Hammond Sk1 ultra-portable combo organ I highly recommend the GKPE-49-TSA Flight Case from a company called Gator Cases.

The fit is nearly perfect, it locks in to place when you close the case and for extra insurance you can put a small additional piece of foam in the small gap:

On the way walking home by good luck I saw an elusive Google Maps Street View car parked on W.30th St. that had driven all the way from California to New York City, notice the high-tech equipment and California plates, highly-interesting!

I hope nobody breaks in the car, often happens when equipment is left in parked cars in New York City (happened 6 times to me personally)

*note: as soon as I started taking pictures of the Google Maps Street View mobile car, other people started to also and soon there was a crowd of people taking pictures
