Behind The Beat http://behindthebeat.com/2004/12/jon-hammond-late-rent/ by Steve Rosenfeld “Jon Hammond says “the fingers are the singers.’” The latest CD from this exceptional and soulful Hammond organist is the proof. “Late Rent” draws on decades of great recording sessions and top live performances to showcase his own playing and many top jazz and funk artists. It shows why the Hammond organ is one of the most enduring electric instruments and why Hammond is one of its best players.”

“Following an altercation between sets, Morgan’s common-law wife Helen More (a.k.a. Morgan), shot him. The injuries were not immediately fatal, but the ambulance service was reluctant to go into the neighborhood where the club was located. They took so long to get there that Morgan bled to death. He was 33 years old”

Hamburg Germany Elbe Tunnel (1911)
Down under the Elbe River in the Old Elbe Tunnel – Jon Hammond Light ears away
Elbe Tunnel Wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elbe_Tunnel_(1911)

Old Elbe Tunnel or St. Pauli Elbe Tunnel (German: Alter Elbtunnel (coll.) or St. Pauli Elbtunnel (official name)) which opened in 1911, is a pedestrian and vehicle tunnel in Hamburg, Germany. The 426 m (1,398 ft) long tunnel was a technical sensation; 24 m (80 ft) beneath the surface, two tubes with 6 m (20 ft) diameter connect central Hamburg with the docks and shipyards on the south side of the river Elbe. This meant a big improvement for tens of thousands of workers in one of the busiest harbours in the world.

Rest In Peace Donald Byrd – these images from my coverage of Beacons in Jazz Concert tribute to Cab Calloway *in middle image with host MC Bill Cosby, Donald in the middle, also in back of the late great alto player educator Arnie Lawrence – May 7th 1990, RIP Donald Byrd – Jon Hammond
Donald’s Wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donald_Byrd

Donaldson Toussaint L’Ouverture Byrd II (December 9, 1932 – February 4, 2013) was an American jazz and rhythm and blues trumpeter. A sideman for many other jazz musicians of his generation, Byrd is best known as one of the only bebop jazz musicians who successfully pioneered the funk and soul genres while simultaneously remaining a pop artist.
Donaldson Toussaint L’Ouverture Byrd II
Born December 9, 1932
Origin Detroit, Michigan, United States
Died February 4, 2013
Genres Bop
Hard bop
Funk
Soul
Instruments Trumpet
Associated acts Pepper Adams, Gigi Gryce, Jackie McLean, Hank Mobley

Byrd attended Cass Technical High School. He performed with Lionel Hampton before finishing high school. After playing in a military band during a term in the United States Air Force, he obtained a bachelor’s degree in music from Wayne State University and a master’s degree from Manhattan School of Music.
While still at the Manhattan School, he joined Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, as replacement for Clifford Brown. In 1955, he recorded with Jackie McLean and Mal Waldron. After leaving the Jazz Messengers in 1956, he performed with many leading jazz musicians of the day, including John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Thelonious Monk, and later Herbie Hancock.
Byrd’s first regular group was a quintet that he co-led from 1958-61 with baritone saxophonist Pepper Adams, an ensemble whose hard-driving performances are captured “live” on At the Half Note Cafe. In June 1964, Byrd jammed with jazz legend Eric Dolphy in Paris just two weeks before Dolphy’s death from insulin shock.
In the 1970s, Byrd moved away from the hard-bop jazz idiom and began to record jazz fusion and rhythm and blues. He teamed up with the Mizell Brothers (producer-writers Larry and Fonce) for Black Byrd in 1973. It was highly successful and became Blue Note Records’ highest-ever selling album. The title track climbed to No. 19 on Billboard′s R&B chart and reached the Hot 100 pop chart, peaking at No. 88. The Mizell brothers’ follow-up albums for Byrd, Street Lady, Places and Spaces and Stepping into Tomorrow, were also big sellers, and have subsequently provided a rich source of samples for acid jazz artists such as Us3. Most of the material for the albums was written by Larry Mizell.
In 1973, he created The Blackbyrds, a fusion group consisting of his best students. They scored several major hits including “Happy Music” (No. 3 R&B, No. 19 pop), “Walking In Rhythm” (No. 4 R&B, No. 6 pop) and “Rock Creek Park”.
In 1994, Byrd appeared on the Red Hot Organization’s compilation album, Stolen Moments: Red Hot + Cool. The album, meant to raise awareness and funds in support of the AIDS epidemic in relation to the African-American community, was heralded as “Album of the Year” by Time Magazine.
He has taught music at Rutgers University, the Hampton Institute, New York University, Howard University, Queens College, Oberlin College, Cornell University and Delaware State University.
In addition to his master’s from Manhattan School of Music, Byrd has two master’s degrees from Columbia University. He received a law degree in 1976, and his doctorate from Columbia University Teachers College in 1982.
In September 2009, he was named an artist-in-residence at Delaware State University.[1] Byrd lives in Teaneck, New Jersey.[2]

Bernard Purdie at his then new Sonor Hi-Lite drum kit on my band Jon Hammond and The Late Rent Session Men gig we played at Cave Canem 24 First Ave Manhattan, NY

This was a very bizarre gig, I showed up and somebody from the club told me an admirer sent a huge flowers arrangement, it turned out to be from Bert Padell who I had personally invited to the gig – he sent a note with it with good luck wishes – I had the display in lobby of my building after the gig until it finally died – must have cost a fortune!

Happy Channukah 2012 / Jewish Holiday Calendar 5773 from NYC folks! We have a huge Menorah in our building in Manhattan, Jon Hammond

*Obama displays menorah rescued from Sandy destruction in Hanukkah ceremony
http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/272949-obama-displays-menorah-rescued-from-sandy-destruction-in-hanukkah-ceremony
President Obama called a 90-year-old menorah saved from a Long Island temple ravaged by Hurricane Sandy a “symbol of perseverance” at the White House Hanukkah ceremony on Thursday.

The president said the menorah stood as one of the “powerful symbols of [the Hanukkah] spirit” in brief remarks before around 600 guests. The lamp, crafted of solid brass, was saved from the Temple Israel of Long Beach. The house of worship was badly damaged as the hurricane battered the New York coast.

“I’m willing to bet it will survive another 90 years, and another 90 years after that,” the president said. “Tonight it serves as another symbol of perseverance.”
Obama, who was joined by first lady Michelle Obama, added that on the sixth night of the Jewish holiday, “we pray its light will bring victims of Sandy and all Americans to a brighter tomorrow.”
The menorah was lit by Rabbi Larry Bazer, an Afghanistan war veteran. Obama noted that Bazer had been deployed in Kabul, Afghanistan, as a military chaplain over the last Hanukkah, joking he had turned down an invitation to the White House ceremony.

“We don’t get that very often,” Obama said. “Usually when we invite people they come.”

Entertainment for the event was provided by the West Point Jewish Chapel Cadet Choir and the U.S. Marine Chamber Orchestra

Wishing a very happy & healthy birthday to my friend, the Honorable Terence Hallinan! *served as District Attorney San Francisco – here Jon Hammond and Terence Hallinan on the occasion of his birthday party, with music provided by Jon Hammond Band – Nancy Pelosi was there, Mayor Willie Brown was there, the whole Hallinan family clan, great party!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terence_Hallinan
Terence Hallinan (born December 4, 1936) is an American attorney and politician from San Francisco, California. He is the second of six sons born to leftist attorney Vincent Hallinan and his wife Vivian. He currently works in private practice at the Law Chambers Building at 345 Franklin Street in San Francisco, (415) 863-1430.
Hallinan was educated at the London School of Economics, University of California, Berkeley, and University of California, Hastings College of the Law. He successfully contested the State Bar’s negative evaluation of his character, based on his engagement in civil disobedience in opposing racist discriminatory employment practices by certain San Francisco businesses in the 1960s, before the Supreme Court of California.[1]
As an attorney, he successfully argued to have the murder convictions of serial-killer Juan Corona overturned on appeal, and represented Corona in his retrial which resulted in 25 convictions for murder and a life sentence.[2]
He served on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, losing his first bid for that office to Harvey Milk in 1977, and later was the district attorney of San Francisco for two terms. While serving as DA, he became a notable opponent of capital punishment. He also was a strong advocate on behalf of decriminalizing prostitution. In his tenure he supported medical marijuana and is now an advisor of NORML.[3]

Jon Hammond for Alcatel-Lucent / Bell Labs:
“On stage, on television or on the radio waves
everyday I feel lucky because I’m ALWAYS ON!
Jon Hammond
Musician, television personality and radio broadcaster Jon Hammond boarded a Concorde in 1981 to travel from New York to Paris at supersonic speed, and he never slowed down.
Jon travels the world, touring in Europe and Asia two or three times each year while broadcasting his “HammondCast” morning radio show seven days a week. At home in the United States, Jon splits his time between New York City and San Francisco and performs four to five concerts each month at local hospitals, nursing homes and prisons. His cable television program, “The Jon Hammond Show,” is in its 25th year and going strong.
“In my business, it’s essential to be contactable 24/7. I couldn’t organize as much as I do without being ALWAYS ON.”
Inspired by the Beatles and fascinated by the radio (he built a crystal radio at the age of five), Jon knew he was destined to be a musician. Although that’s a departure from tradition – Jon’s father and grandfather were physicians – Jon carries on the family business in his own way by performing in some of the very hospitals where his father once practiced medicine.
“I’ve seen people get out of their wheelchairs and dance more times than I can count, so I’m happy I can make a difference playing for those who are less fortunate than me.”
Jon has not forgotten those who opened doors for him when he was first starting out in music and broadcasting, and now he uses his radio and cable television shows to do the same for deserving young talent.
Like Jon, we at Alcatel-Lucent are passionate about connecting people through communications technology. In our Bell Labs locations around the world, we’re working on new and exciting innovations in next-generation broadband technology to ensure people like Jon can find even more creative ways to share music, moments and memories. http://www.HammondCast.com

Also a virtuoso guitar player with his own definitive, unique playing style and “ear”, Joe has jammed with the likes of John Entwistle and Jack Bruce. He has also been a fixture at music trade shows for decades as a guitar demonstrator, having set a record for most hours played at a single trade show.

Marine Chamber Orchestra.

“Meet The Incredible Sk1 Hammond with Michael Falkenstein and Jon Hammond”
First look at this exciting new keyboard product weighing in at 7 kilos, just over 15 lbs., it sounds like a real Hammond B3 organ with Leslie, or a full size grand piano, any type of famous vintage electric piano or synthesizer. This keyboard does it all and with original Hammond drawbars and it’s feather light. Sk1 has a built in USB flash drive input, the keys are ‘bullet proof’ waterfall style keys that can hold up to extreme pressure of rockin’ rock musicians, swinging jazz musicians and can even sound like a huge pipe organ. This film will blow your mind.

R.I.P. James Moody – passed away just about exactly 2 years ago – Jon Hammond

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Moody_(saxophonist)
James Moody (March 26, 1925 – December 9, 2010) was an American jazz saxophone and flute player. He was best known for his hit “Moody’s Mood for Love,” an improvisation based on “I’m in the Mood for Love”; in performance, he often sang Eddie Jefferson’s vocalese lyrics for the tune, which Eddie had fit to Moody’s famous solo.

James Moody was born in Savannah, Georgia. Growing up in New Jersey, he was attracted to the saxophone after hearing George Holmes Tate, Don Byas, and various saxophonists who played with Count Basie, and later also took up the flute. He joined the US Army Air Corps in 1943 and played in the “negro band” on the segregated base.[1] Following his discharge from the military in 1946 he played bebop with Dizzy Gillespie[2] for two years. Moody later played with Gillespie in 1964, where his colleagues in the Gillespie group, pianist Kenny Barron and guitarist Les Spann, would be musical collaborators in the coming decades.
In 1948 he recorded his first session for Blue Note Records, the first in a long recording career playing both saxophone and flute. That same year he relocated to Europe, where he stayed for three years, saying he had been “scarred by racism” in the U.S.[1] His European work, including the first recording of “Moody’s Mood for Love”, which became a hit in 1952,[3] saw him add the alto saxophone to his repertoire and helped to establish him as recording artist in his own right, and formed part of the growth of European jazz. Then in 1952, he returned to the U.S. to a recording career with Prestige Records and others, playing flute and saxophone in bands that included musicians such as Pee Wee Moore and others. In the 1960s, he rejoined Dizzy Gillespie. He later worked also with Mike Longo.[4]
In a 1998 interview with Bob Bernotas, Moody stated that he believed jazz has definite spiritual resonance.

HammondCast 22
This episode of HammondCast on KYOU 1550 AM Radio features some historic recordings of Jon Hammond with radio & tv legend AL “JAZZBEAUX” COLLINS, this will blow your socks off! Al does a complete recitation of his Hipster version of “Little Red Ridinghood” accompanied by Jon on the Hammond organ live. Also radio host CHRIS CORTEZ talking about how Jon and Jazzbeaux almost blew up the transmitter for the radio station by plugging the Hammond organ directly in as a late-night experiment on the Bay Area station…wooops! All worked out ok, but the Chief Engineer and Station Manager were a little bit upset the next day.
Going back even a few more years, Al Jazzbeaux breaks Jon’s recording of “Sidewinder” on the now defunct but legendary and most powerful station of New York City-WNEW 1130 AM. For Al Jazzbo Collins freaks, this HammondCast episode is a MUST.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harold_Mabern

Harold Mabern (born March 20, 1936 in Memphis, Tennessee) is a hard bop and soul jazz pianist.

Early in his career, Mabern played in Chicago with Walter Perkins’ MJT + 3 in the late 1950s[1] before moving to New York in 1959. Mabern has worked with Jimmy Forrest, Lionel Hampton, the Jazztet (1961-1962), Donald Byrd, Miles Davis (1963), J. J. Johnson (1963-1965), Lee Morgan (1965), Hank Mobley (1965), Sonny Rollins, Freddie Hubbard, Wes Montgomery, Joe Williams (1966-1967), and Sarah Vaughan. In more recent years, he has recorded extensively with his former William Paterson University student, the tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander.[2]
He performed in a video recorded session with Wes Montgomery in 1965 that is currently available on DVD as Wes Montgomery Live in ’65.
In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Mabern led four albums for Prestige Records, performed with Lee Morgan, and recorded with Stanley Cowell’s Piano Choir. Mabern has recorded as a leader for DIW/Columbia and Sackville and toured with the Contemporary Piano Ensemble (1993-1995).
A longtime faculty member at William Paterson University, Mabern is a frequent instructor at the Stanford Jazz Workshop.

Is Harold asleep?

Jon Hammond Harold is wide awake, he is just reclining comfortably -just told us some killin’ amazing stories about playing with Lee Morgan and he was with Lee when he died tragically / suddenly, you know the story – one of the most famous stories in Jazz, Harold was there playing with Lee that night, Jon

Barry Finnerty ·
Wow. That would not have been pleasant. To have your good friend and great trumpet player shot dead onstage right next to you by some crazed jealous woman.

Jon Hammond: You know it Barry!

Fresh version of Lee Morgan’s classic
If you love Lee Morgan’s great jazz hit song “The Sidewinder” (and who doesn’t?) you should have a listen to this fresh version featuring jazz guitar and hammond organ quoting the tune of the deceased master of swinging bop, and doing some nice improvisations too.

HammondCast 17, just back from Hamburg Germany where I recorded my new album, an official production of NDR Radio in Studio 1 with some of my all-time favorite musicians: Lutz Buchner (Sax), Joe Gallardo (Trombone), Heinz Lichius (Drums), myself-Jon Hammond (XK-3 Organ/Bass) and Engineer: Rudy Grosser in Studio 1 NDR Radio. I’ll be playing some selections rough mixes (not so rough actually!) as my Christmas gift to the listeners, and speaking of Christmas…from inside San Francisco County Jail #8 “Pod E”, a live recording of my trio’s annual Christmas Prison Show with the great tenor saxophonist Larry Schneider & Ronnie Smith Jr. on drums along with myself on keys playing the Christmas classic: “Have Yourself a Merry Christmas”. Every year I tell the ladies “And ya’ better be good!”
And from the Studio 1 NDR Sessions my original blues shuffle: No X-Cess Baggage Blues, some fine playing by Lutz on one of my favorite ballads: My One and Only Love and my theme song: “Late Rent”. Special thanks to Knut Benzner of NDR Radio for co-producing these recordings now heard on KYOU Radio, 1550 on the AM Dial.

On the Night Before The Big Vote – Jazz is alive and well one week after Hurricane Sandy at Local 802 Musicians Union in New York City folks!
This evening I played the early bird set with these great musicians, my all-time favorites here – L to R: The great Richard Clements jazz pianist extraordinaire, Mike Comoia the great veteran tenor saxophonist, myself Jon Hammond at the organ and one of the greatest jazz bassists in New York – Bob Cunningham, and he is a killin’ vocalist occasionally and pianist as well – special thanks to Jazz Foundation of America *Note: Photo by Greg Bandy with my camera, thanks Greg! — with Bob Cunningham at Associated Musicians of Greater New York, Local 802 AFM

Folks, I will be the #1 voter today at my polling place – got here 5AM, early shot so you know I am not messing around. In less than 45 minutes I’m going to be pulling the lever for President Obama and everybody in my building is also – I don’t know one person who is voting for the other guy. NYPD is on the scene to make sure there won’t be any hanky panky..this is the big day people! – Jon Hammond

#1 Voter at my polling place – photographic proof – Jon Hammond *Note: The scanning machine is scanning my paper ballot at 6:13AM. It is a little bit tricky, supervisor said mine was A-OK and of course I voted for President Obama and V.P. Joe Biden, Congressman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), Democratic early bird voter here in New York City – JH — at Times Square

Get on down to your polling place and vote my fellow Americans! *Note: There is a tricky thing on the ballot – it says “Vote for any four” in one group of four. I had the supervisor come in and sure enough he told me that it is really “Vote for ONE of four” – he told me if I voted for all 4 it would invalidate my ballot. Take care to do it correctly folks.

This is Jon Hammond’s inspired all-original trio album played with the intensity of a live performance. It features great saxophone work by Alex Budman and the sophisticated funky sound of Ronnie Smith, Jr. on drums. Accordion and guitar embellish several tracks, and the overall sound is very musical and unusual. Lots of powerful groove drives some really great Jon Hammond compositions such as “Soon I Will Be Free”, “Cannonball 99 (One More Time!), “Six Year Itch”, “Jennifer’s Song” and “9/11 Tribute.”

Derek Sivers (born September 22, 1969[1]) is best known for being the founder and former president of CD Baby, an online CD store for independent musicians.
A professional musician (and circus clown) since 1987, Derek started CD Baby by accident in 1998 when he was selling his own CD on his website, and friends asked if he could sell theirs, too. CD Baby went on to become the largest seller of independent music on the web, with over $100M in sales for over 150,000 musician clients.
After he won the 2003 World Technology Award, Esquire magazine’s annual “Best and Brightest” cover story said, “Derek Sivers is changing the way music is bought and sold . . . one of the last music-business folk heroes.”
In 2008, Derek sold CD Baby to focus on his new ventures to benefit musicians, including his new company, MuckWork, where teams of assistants help musicians do their “uncreative dirty work”. His current projects and writings are all at sivers.org.
Derek is married to Sajitha, and they reside in Singapore.

Derek Sivers bequeathed his company to a charitable trust for music education, and had them sell it to Disk Makers. This agreement allows him to receive the minimum allowed by law for such agreement of 5% per year of the company’s sale price (annually $1,100,000 pretax, based on a sale price of $22 million as reported by Sivers[2]) until death, while upon death the remainder if any will ultimately go into the trust. — with Derek Sivers and Derek Sivers

The late great Dr. Billy Taylor and Jon Hammond
Billy wrote one of my favorite tunes in 1952 one year before I was born: “1952 “I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free” – inspired me to write one of my biggest hits:
“Get Back In The Groove” RIP Billy Taylor
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billy_Taylor

Billy Taylor (July 24, 1921 – December 28, 2010[1][2]) was an American jazz pianist, composer, broadcaster and educator. He was the Robert L. Jones Distinguished Professor of Music at East Carolina University in Greenville, and since 1994, he was the artistic director for jazz at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.[3][4]
Taylor was a jazz activist. He sat on the Honorary Founders Board of The Jazz Foundation of America. In 1989, Billy Taylor, Ann Ruckert, Herb Storfer and Phoebe Jacobs started The Jazz Foundation to save the homes and the lives of America’s elderly jazz and blues musicians, later including musicians that survived Hurricane Katrina.[5]
Billy Taylor was also one of the foremost jazz educators. He lectured in colleges, served on panels and travelled worldwide as a jazz ambassador. Critic Leonard Feather once said, “It is almost indisputable that Dr. Billy Taylor is the world’s foremost spokesman for jazz.”
Taylor was born in Greenville, North Carolina but moved to Washington, D.C. when he was five. He grew up in a musical family and learned to play different instruments as a child, including guitar, drums and saxophone. But he was most successful at the piano and took classical piano lessons with Henry Grant, the same teacher that had educated Duke Ellington a generation earlier. He made his first professional appearance playing keyboard at the age of 13 and the compensation was one dollar.[6] Taylor attended Dunbar High School, America’s first high school for African American students. He went to Virginia State College and majored in sociology. Pianist Dr. Undine Smith Moore noticed young Taylor’s talent in piano and he changed his major to music, graduating with a degree in music in 1942.[6]
Taylor set out to New York City after graduation and started playing piano professionally from 1944, first with Ben Webster’s Quartet on New York’s 52nd Street. The same night he joined Webster’s Quartet, he met Art Tatum, who became his mentor. Among other musicians he worked with, he played with Machito’s mambo band, when he developed a love for Latin music. After an eight-month tour with the Don Redman Orchestra in Europe, Taylor stayed there with his wife Theodora and worked in Paris and Holland. Taylor returned to New York later that year and cooperated with Bob Wyatt and Sylvia Syms at the Royal Roost jazz club and Billie Holiday in a successful show called Holiday on Broadway. A year later, he became the house pianist at Birdland and performed with many of the greatest jazz talents in history, including Charlie Parker, J.J. Johnson, Stan Getz, Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis.[6] He played at Birdland longer than any other pianist in the history of the club. In 1949, Taylor published his first book, a textbook about bebop piano styles.
[edit]Mid-career
He composed one of the his most famous tunes in 1952 “I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free”, and subsequently achieving more popularity with Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s. Nina Simone covered the song in her 1967 album Silk and Soul. It is widely known in the UK as a piano instrumental version, used for BBC Television’s Film programme. Solomon Burke, Derek Trucks, The Lighthouse Family, Levon Helm and Jools Holland & his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra have also recorded versions.
He continued dozens of the recordings in the 1950s and 1960s, notably the album he made with the Cuban percussionist Candido Camero titled Billy Taylor Trio with Candido, My Fair Lady Loves Jazz, Cross Section and Taylor Made Jazz.
His broadcast career also thrived. In 1961, Taylor founded New York’s Jazzmobile, which provides arts education program of the highest quality via workshops, master classes, lecture demonstrations, arts enrichment programs, outdoor summer mobile concerts, special indoor concerts and special projects.[7] In 1958, he became the Musical Director of NBC’s The Subject is Jazz, the first ever television series focusing on jazz. The 13-part series was produced by the new National Educational Television Network (NET) and hosted guests including Duke Elington, Aaron Copland, Bill Evans, Cannonball Adderley, Jimmy Rushing and Langston Hughes. He also worked as a DJ and program director on radio station WNEW in New York in the 1960s. During the 1960s, the Billy Taylor Trio was a regular feature of the Hickory House on West 55th street in Manhattan. From 1969 to 1972, Taylor served as the music director forThe David Frost Show and was the first African American to lead a talk show band. Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Benny Goodman and Buddy Rich were just a few of the jazz musicians who played on the show. In 1981, Jazzmobile produced a Jazz special for the National Public Radio, and for which the program received the Peabody Award for Excellence in Broadcasting Programs. Jazzmobile’s 1990 Tribute Concert to Dr. Taylor at Avery Fisher Hall, part of the JVC Jazz Festival, featured Nancy Wilson, Ahmad Jamal Trio and Terence Blanchard Quintet.
[edit]Later career
In 1981, after being profiled by CBS News Sunday Morning, he was hired as an on-air correspondent and then conducted more than 250 interviews with musicians. He received an Emmy Award for his segment on the multi-talented Quincy Jones.
In 1989, Taylor formed his own “Taylor Made” record label to document his own music. You Tempt Me (1996) is a strong outing by his 1985 trio (with Victor Gaskin and drummer Curtis Boyd) that includes a rendition of Duke Ellington’s “Take the “A” Train”. White Nights (1991) has Taylor, Gaskin, and drummer Bobby Thomas performing live from Leningrad in the Soviet Union, then came Solo (1992), and Jazzmobile Allstars (1992). In 1997, he received New York state governor’s art award.
Taylor suffered from a 2002 stroke, which affected his right hand, but he continued to perform almost until his death. He died after a heart attack on December 28, 2010 in Manhattan, at age of 89. His legacy was honored in a Harlem memorial service on Jan.11, 2011, featuring performances by Taylor’s final working trio, bassist Chip Jackson and drummer Winard Harper, along with longtime Taylor associates Jimmy Owens, Frank Wess, Geri Allen, Christian Sands and vocalist Cassandra Wilson. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Theodora Castion Taylor; a daughter, Kim Taylor-Thompson; and a granddaughter. His son, artist Duane Taylor, died in 1988.[8]
[edit]Legacy

Taylor appeared on hundreds of albums and composed more than 300 songs during his career spanned over six decades. His 1963 song, “I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free” dealt with civil rights issues and became the unofficial anthem of the civil rights movement in the 1960s. It was selected as “one of the greatest songs of the sixties” by the New York Times and was the theme music of the 1996 film “Ghosts of Mississippi”. His 1967 instrumental recording of the tune is widely known in the United Kingdom as the opening theme music for the long-running TV series The Film Programme, for many years hosted by Barry Norman.
Engaging and educating more audience and young people had been a central part of Taylor’s career. He holds the Wilbur D. Barrett Chair of Music at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, is a Duke Ellington Fellow at Yale, and holds 23 honorary degrees. Besides publishing instructional books on jazz, he taught jazz course at Howard University, Long Island University, The Manhattan School of Music, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where he earned his Masters and Ph.D in 1975.
His extensive appearance in television series and jazz educational programs brought the music he loves to the masses at the grass roots level as well as more formal arenas. He’s sometimes more known as a television personality than a pianist. He was quoted saying in a 2007 article in the Post Magazine: “there’s no question that being an advocate eclipsed my reputation as a musician. It was my doing. I wanted to prove to people that jazz has an audience. I had to do that for me.” [2]
[edit]Awards and honors

With over twenty-three honorary doctoral degrees, Taylor was also the recipient of two Peabody Awards for Jazzmobile, NEA Jazz Masters Award (1998) an Emmy Award (1983) for carrying out over 250 interviews for “CBS News Sunday Morning”, a Grammy Award (2004)[9] and a host of prestigious and highly coveted prizes, such as the Down Beat magazine’s Lifetime Achievement award (1984), National Medal of Arts (1992), and the Tiffany Award (1991). He was also honored in 2001 with the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) Jazz Living Legend Award,[10] and election to the Hall of Fame for the International Association for Jazz Education. He served as the artistic director for jazz at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, where he developed many critically acclaimed concert series including the Louis Armstrong Legacy series, and the annual Mary Lou Williams Women in Jazz Festival. In addition, he performed at the White House seven times and was one of only three jazz musicians to be appointed to the National Council of the Arts.
Taylor was inducted into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame in 2010.

Jon Hammond with the great Clark Terry – Clark told me, Hammond…don’t believe what they tell you about ‘The Golden Years’ – The Golden Years Suck!
Clark Terry (born December 14, 1920)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clark_Terry
is an American swing and bop trumpeter, a pioneer of the flugelhorn in jazz, educator, NEA Jazz Masters inductee, and recipient of the 2010 Grammy Lifetime Achieve Beyondment Award. Only four other trumpet players in history have ever received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award: Louis Armstrong (Clark’s old mentor), Miles Davis (whom Clark mentored), Dizzy Gillespie (who often described Clark as the greatest jazz trumpet player on earth) and Benny Carter. Clark Terry is one of the most prolific jazz musicians in history, having appeared on 905 known recording sessions, which makes him the most recorded trumpet player of all time. In comparison, Louis Armstrong performed on 620 sessions, Harry “Sweets” Edison on 563, and Dizzy Gillespie on 501.

He has played with Charlie Barnet (1947), Count Basie (1948–1951),[1] Duke Ellington (1951–1959)[1] and Quincy Jones (1960), and has recorded regularly both as a leader and sideman. In all, his career in jazz spans more than sixty years.
Terry was born in St. Louis, Missouri. He attended Vashon High School and began his professional career in the early 1940s playing, in local clubs. He served as a bandsman in the United States Navy during World War II.
Terry’s years with Basie and Ellington in the late 1940s and 1950s established him as a world-class jazz artist. Blending the St. Louis tone with contemporary styles, Terry’s sound influenced a generation. During this period, he took part in many of Ellington’s suites and acquired a reputation for his wide range of styles (from swing to hard bop), technical proficiency, and good humor. Terry exerted a positive influence on musicians like Miles Davis and Quincy Jones, both of whom acknowledge Clark’s influence during the early stages of their careers. Terry had informally taught Davis while they were still in St Louis.
After leaving Ellington, Clark’s international recognition soared when he accepted an offer from the National Broadcasting Company (NBC) to become its first African-American staff musician. He appeared for ten years on The Tonight Show as a member of The Tonight Show Band, first led by Skitch Henderson and later by Doc Severinsen, where his unique “mumbling” scat singing became famous when he scored a hit with “Mumbles.” A persistent rumor is that Terry was a candidate to lead the band, but for racial skittishness on the part of NBC.
Terry continued to play with musicians such as J. J. Johnson and Oscar Peterson,[2] and led a group with Bob Brookmeyer that achieved popularity in the early 1960s. In the 1970s, Terry concentrated increasingly on the flugelhorn, which he plays with a full, ringing tone. In addition to his studio work and teaching at jazz workshops, Terry toured regularly in the 1980s with small groups (including Peterson’s) and performed as the leader of his Big B-A-D Band (formed about 1970). After financial difficulties forced him to break up the Big B-A-D Band, he performed bands such as the Unifour Jazz Ensemble. His humor and command of jazz trumpet styles are apparent in his “dialogues” with himself, on different instruments or on the same instrument, muted and unmuted. He has occasionally performed solos on a trumpet or flugelhorn mouthpiece.
From the 1970s through the 1990s, Clark performed at Carnegie Hall, Town Hall, and Lincoln Center, toured with the Newport Jazz All Stars and Jazz at the Philharmonic, and he was featured with Skitch Henderson’s New York Pops Orchestra. In 1998, Terry recorded George Gershwin’s “Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off” for the Red Hot Organization’s compilation album Red Hot + Rhapsody, a tribute to George Gershwin, which raised money for various charities devoted to increasing AIDS awareness and fighting the disease. In 2001, he again recorded for the Red Hot Organization with artist Amel Larrieux for the compilation album Red Hot + Indigo, a tribute to Duke Ellington.
Prompted early in his career by Dr. Billy Taylor, Clark and Milt Hinton bought instruments for and gave instruction to young hopefuls which planted the seed that became Jazz Mobile in Harlem. This venture tugged at Clark’s greatest love: involving youth in the perpetuation of jazz. Between global performances, Clark continues to share wholeheartedly his jazz expertise and encourage students, including up-and-coming young jazz trumpeter, Josh Shpak. Since 2000, Clark has hosted Clark Terry Jazz Festivals on land and sea, held his own jazz camps, and appeared in more than fifty jazz festivals on six continents.
His career as both leader and sideman with more than three hundred recordings demonstrates that he is one of the most prolific luminaries in jazz. Clark composed more than two hundred jazz songs and performed for seven U.S. Presidents.
He also has several recordings with major groups including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Dutch Metropole Orchestra, the Duke Ellington Orchestra and the Chicago Jazz Orchestra, hundreds of high school and college ensembles, his own duos, trios, quartets, quintets, sextets, octets, and two big bands: Clark Terry’s Big Bad Band and Clark Terry’s Young Titans of Jazz, with the likes of Branford Marsalis, Conrad Herwig, Brad Leali, Stephen Guerra, Adam Schroeder, Frank Greene and Tony Lujan. The Clark Terry Archive at William Paterson University in Wayne, New Jersey, contains instruments, tour posters, awards, original copies of over 70 big band arrangements, recordings and other memorabilia.
Terry was a long-time resident of Bayside, Queens, and Corona, Queens, New York.[3] He and his wife, Gwen, later moved to Haworth, New Jersey.[4] They currently reside in Pine Bluff, Arkansas.[5]

There’s the famous big flowers Bert Padell sent over before I hit the gig with Bernard Purdie at Cave Canem

- my neighbor Michael Sergio probably remembers those flowers, Frank the Super let me put them in our lobby – they lasted a good 2 weeks. I had my 2-Leslie stack for that gig, we rocked that place – a lot of old friends came out of the woodwork for that hit including Don Friedman who was the ex-partner of mega concert promoter Ron Delsener – JH

Jon Hammond We played there a few times actually. Snooze ya’ lose, we won’t be there again most likely. In over 40 years I wouldn’t call any gigs regular – some were better than others and some more steady. The days of taking up residency in one club location have pretty much been over since early 70′s in my experience. Stay tuned for my upcoming book “Weird gigs I have played” by Jon Hammond

Hi Jon — Do you have any pics from the mid 90′s with Bernard playing his Slingerland kit?

Jon Hammond Eric: Bernard always played Sonor during that time on my gigs, with Sabian cymbals – his Salmon colored Sonor Signature kit with 18″ kick always, and starting from this gig he got the hi-lite set, much lighter in weight than the Sonor Signature cans, Jon Hammond

Henry Charles Bukowski (born Heinrich Karl Bukowski; August 16, 1920 – March 9, 1994) was a German-born American poet, novelist and short story writer. His writing was influenced by the social, cultural and economic ambience of his home city of Los Angeles.[6] It is marked by an emphasis on the ordinary lives of poor Americans, the act of writing, alcohol, relationships with women and the drudgery of work. Bukowski wrote thousands of poems, hundreds of short stories and six novels, eventually publishing over sixty books.

And a slow rainy day Blues featuring guitarist JOE BERGER and RAY GRAPPONE drums, Jon on the XB-2 organ/bass. Also a 35 year-old recording of my old rock band HADES and a shout out to the bass player STEVE WRIGHT who is recuperating from a stroke and heart attack but is now starting to speak again, get better Steve! From there to 1995 recording in LE BAR BAT NYC playing Jon’s tune “Pocket Funk”. And finally ending up back in AFN Europe Headquarters playing Jon Hammond’s theme song: “LATE RENT”, dedicated to YOU of KYOU the your Rent will never be Late! http://www.HammondCast.com

Hollywood California — Kenny Burrell on the microphone with Jon Hammond at ASCAP Expo
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kenny_Burrell

Kenneth Earl “Kenny” Burrell (born July 31, 1931)[1] is an American jazz guitarist. His playing is grounded in bebop and blues; he has performed and recorded with a wide range of jazz musicians
Burrell was born in Detroit, Michigan to a musical family and began playing guitar at the age of 12. His influences as a guitar player include Charlie Christian, Django Reinhardt, and Wes Montgomery. While a student at Wayne State University, he made his debut recording as a member of Dizzy Gillespie’s sextet in 1951, later he recorded the “Ground Round” single at Fortune Records in Detroit. He toured with Oscar Peterson after graduating in 1955 and then moved to New York City in 1956.[1]
A consummate sideman, Burrell recorded with a wide range of prominent musicians. He also led his own groups since 1951 and recorded many well received albums.[1]
In the 1970s he began leading seminars about music, particularly Duke Ellington’s. A highly popular performer, he has won several jazz polls in Japan and the United Kingdom as well as the United States.
He has recorded about 106 albums, including Midnight Blue (1963), Blue Lights, Guitar Forms, Sunup To Sundown (1990), Soft Winds (1993), Then Along Came Kenny (1993), and Lotus Blossom (1995).
In 2001, Burrell performed “C Jam Blues” with Medeski, Martin & Wood for the Red Hot Organization’s compilation album Red Hot + Indigo, a tribute to Duke Ellington, which raised money for various charities devoted to increasing AIDS awareness and fighting the disease.
As of 1996, Burrell has served as Director of Jazz Studies at UCLA, mentoring such notable alumni as Gretchen Parlato and Kalil Wilson.[2] Burrell teaches a course titled “Ellingtonia”, examining the life and accomplishments of Duke Ellington.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oleta_Adams
Oleta Adams (born May 4, 1953, Seattle, Washington) is an American soul, jazz, and gospel singer and pianist.
Adams was born the daughter of a preacher and was raised with gospel music. In her youth her family moved to Yakima, Washington, which is sometimes shown as her place of birth.
Before gaining her opportunity to perform, Adams faced a great deal of rejection. In the 1970s, she moved to Los Angeles, California where she recorded a demo tape. However, many music executives were exclusively interested in disco music rather than Adams’ preferred style.
With the advice of her singing coach, Lee Farrell, Adams moved to Kansas City where she did a variety of local gigs. Adams started her career in the early 1980s with two self-financed albums which had limited success.
[edit]Collaboration with Tears For Fears

In 1985, Adams was discovered by Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith, founders of the English band Tears for Fears, while performing in a hotel bar in Kansas City, Missouri whilst they were on a US tour. They chatted with Adams after her performance, and two years later they contacted her to invite her to join their band as a singer on their next album, The Seeds of Love.[1]
In 1989, the album was released and the single “Woman In Chains” — sung as a duet by Adams and Orzabal and with Phil Collins on drums — became her first hit. Adams embarked on a world tour with Tears For Fears in 1990, performing by herself as the supporting artist at the start of each show, and remaining onstage throughout the Tears For Fears set where she would provide piano and vocals.
[edit]1990s

Following her work with Tears For Fears, Adams was offered a recording contract by their label Fontana Records and restarted her solo career in 1990, assisted by Orzabal who co-produced her new album, Circle of One. The album received much critical acclaim and (after a slow start) eventually peaked at no.1 in the UK in 1991 when she scored her biggest hit to date with her Grammy nominated cover of Brenda Russell’s “Get Here”. The song was popular during the 1991 Gulf War[2][3] as families of deployed troops in the region embraced the tune as a theme song.[3][4] 1991 also saw Adams contribute to the Elton John/Bernie Taupin tribute album, Two Rooms, on which appeared her version of John’s 1974 hit “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down On Me”. Adams’ version became another top 40 hit in the UK.
Her next album, Evolution (1993), was also a commercial success, making the UK top 10. It also featured her self-penned adult contemporary single “Window of Hope”. Her 1995 release, Moving On, saw Adams move more in the direction of R&B, and she also reunited with Roland Orzabal for the duet “Me and my Big Ideas” on the Tears For Fears album Raoul and the Kings of Spain the same year. Two years later she released the Christian themed album Come Walk with Me.
In 1998, she toured as a guest vocalist on Phil Collins’s Big Band Jazz Tour.
[edit]2000s

In 2001, Adams released her sixth album, All The Love, a return to an R&B/Adult contemporary sound. The album was re-released in 2004 in Germany with a different title I Can’t Live a Day without You.
In 2004, Adams reunited with Tears for Fears once again as she made a surprise guest appearance onstage at their Kansas City concert, performing “Woman in Chains”.
Adams released her first Christmas album on 3 October 2006, entitled Christmas Time with Oleta.[5]
A new secular album entitled Let’s Stay Here, was released on April 21, 2009, by E1 Music.
[edit]Personal life

In 1994, Adams married drummer John Cushon at a United Methodist church in Kansas City, where they both teach Sunday School. They met in 1980 while working on a demo tape for Adams.[6] Adams stated that she never had a passion to get married but on January 17, 1994 she and Cushon were involved in the Los Angeles earthquake. Adams referred to this as a sign from God that she was ready to get married. — with Oleta Adams

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lalah_Hathaway
Eulaulah Donyll Hathaway (born December 16, 1968)[1] best known as Lalah Hathaway referred to as the First Daughter of Soul, is a contemporary R&B and jazz singer. She is the daughter of soul singer Donny Hathaway and a classically trained vocalist. In 1990, Lalah Hathaway released a self-titled album. The album’s first single was “Heaven Knows”, produced by Derek Bramble. The follow-up single was “Baby Don’t Cry” produced by Angela Winbush.
In 1991, Hathaway released her extended play, Night & Day in Japan. A Moment was released in 1994, debuting at #34 on the Top R&B albums chart. The lead single “Let Me Love You” charted on the Hot R&B charts at #37. In 1999, Lalah Hathaway collaborated with Joe Sample and released her third album The Song Lives On. After a five year hiatus, Hathaway returned with her fourth album Outrun the Sky. The single “Forever, For Always, For Love” peaked #1 on the Hot Adult R&B Airplay.
In 2007, Hathaway signed to Stax Records and in 2008 released her fifth album Self Portrait. It was released on June 3, 2008 in the United States, debuted at #63 on the Billboard’s Hot 200 and reached the top ten on the Top R&B albums chart, making this album, Hathaway’s most successful album to date. She received a Best Female R&B Vocal Performance Grammy Award nomination for “That Was Then”.
Lalah Hathaway was born in Chicago, Illinois, on December 16, 1968. Hathaway is the daughter of Donny Hathaway, an R&B and soul singer, and Eulaulah Hathaway, an accomplished musician. In 1979, Hathaway lost her father, Donny Hathaway at the age of ten. His body did not have any indication of struggle, and the glass from the window in Hathaway’s room had been removed; investigators determined Hathaway had committed suicide.
The Chicago native first put pen to paper, “with the music,” as a 10th grader. In 1989, Hathaway signed to Virgin Records and released her first song “Inside the Beat”, which was released as a promo single. Later, as a student at Berklee College of Music, she recorded her self-titled debut in 1990.
[edit]Recording career

Lalah Hathaway and A Moment (1990-1995)
In 1990, Lalah Hathaway released her self-titled debut album. The album debuted at #191 on the Billboard Hot 200 and #18 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts.[2] The album’s lead single Heaven Knows became a top ten single peaking at #3 on the Hot R&B charts. The album’s second single “Baby Don’t Cry” only charted at #18 on the Hot R&B charts. The follow-up single “I’m Coming Back” was less successful, possibly due to the lack of a music video. The album’s final single “Something” debuted at #21 on the Hot R&B charts. In 1991, Hathaway released an EP entitled Night & Day. The EP was only released in Japan but the single “Night & Day” was released in America. “Night & Day”‘ debuted at #110 on the Hot R&B charts. In 1992, Hathaway appeared on Grover Washington’s album “Next Exit”. The song, “Love Like This”, which featured vocals from Lalah Hathaway, was chosen to be the lead single off the album. The single charted at #31 on the Hot R&B charts.
In 1994, Hathaway followed up her success with her second album, A Moment, which debuted at #34 on the Top R&B albums chart and #23 on the Heatseekers chart.[2] The release of her second album saw Hathaway embracing an even more progressive sound as producer Brian Alexander Morgan was enlisted for her upbeat lead single “Let Me Love You”, which debuted at the #37 on the Hot R&B charts. Later that year, the songs “Separate Ways” and “Family Affair” were released as singles, although neither charted. The album did not sell as well as her first release and eventually Hathaway left Virgin.
[edit]The Song Lives On (1998-2000)
She continued working with many other established artists, including Take 6, Mary J. Blige, The Winans, and Marcus Miller, writing, producing and doing background vocals. In 1999, Hathaway joined GRP Records and collaborated with jazz legend Joe Sample on the album The Song Lives On. The Song Lives On, topped the jazz charts at #2.[2] The album became Hathaway’s second debut on the Billboard’s Hot 200 and later charted on Top R&B album chart.[2] The single “When Your Life Was Low” charted only on the Hot R&B charts at #118. The album’s second single “Fever” failed to chart.
The Song Lives On went on to become one of Hathaway and Joe Sample’s most successful album to chart. In response to the album’s success, Hathaway and Sample were honored with Billboard/BET On Jazz Award for “Mainstream Jazz Album”.[3]
[edit]Outrun the Sky (2003-2006)
In 2003, Lalah Hathaway appeared alongside Sanctuary, Pyramid, Mesa, and Blue Moon Records. In 2004, Hathaway released a cover version of Luther Vandross’s song “Forever, For Always, For Love”. The song later appeared on the all-star tribute album “Forever, For Always, For Luther” and on Hathaway’s fourth album Outrun the Sky. The song was released the lead single and peaked #1 on the Adult R&B charts. Forever, For Always, For Love became Hathaway’s first single to chart on the Billboard’s Hot 100, charting at #112 and #37 on the Hot R&B charts. Hathaway’s first solo album in five years featured production from Rex Rideout, Mike City, and Chris Parks.[4] The album’s second single “Better and Better” peaked #121 on the Hot R&B charts.
Also in 2004, Hathaway was featured on Donald Lawrence’s debut solo album I Speak Life as a lead vocalist on “Don’t Forget to Remember”. In 2005, Hathaway was seen on the international Daughters of Soul tour along with Sandra St. Victor, Nona Hendryx, Indira Khan, Simone, and Joyce Kennedy.[5] Continuing her forays into the gospel realm, she could be found on Israel and New Breed’s 2006 Chr*stmas album A Timeless Chr*stmas, which also featured Marcus Miller.
[edit]Stax and Self Portrait (2007-2009)
The recently re-launched Stax Records label had announced signing Hathaway. Hathaway stated, “The foundation of soul music is rooted in Stax Records. Working with Maurice White on the Interpretations project was more than special to me. There is no higher compliment than to be signed to a label whose music is timeless. I’m proud to carry the torch that will continue to bring quality soul music to a new audience.”[6]
Her first release from Stax was the single “Love’s Holiday,” from the Earth, Wind & Fire tribute album Interpretations.[7] In April 2008, Hathaway released her lead single Let Go, which debut at #51 on the Hot R&B charts and #16 on the Hot Adult R&B charts. In June 2008, Hathaway’s debut for Stax Records, Self Portrait was released. Collaborating again with producer Rex Rideout on much of the album and working with such artists as Rahsaan Patterson and Sandra St. Victor, Self Portrait became her most successful album to date, debuting at #6 Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and #63 on the Billboard’s Hot 200. The album sold over 9,400 copies in the first week.[2][8]
After the release of Self Portrait, Hathaway went on tour, which began in July 2008.[9] The Self Portrait Tour was singer Lalah Hathaway’s second solo concert tour, intended to showcase songs from her debut solo album, Self Portrait. The concert tour contained ten tour dates in American and collection of songs from her previous albums, Lalah Hathaway and Outrun the Sky, and few songs from her present album, Self Portrait. The tour only reached America. In late 2008, “That Was Then” was released as the album’s second single. The single debut at #105 on the Hot R&B charts and #32 on the Hot Adult R&B Airplay.[10]
In November 2008, Hathaway joined Will Downing and Gerald Albright for the Soulful Chr*stmas Tour. The tour, which kicked off on November 28 at the Detroit Opera House, appeared in the places of Washington, D.C., Memphis, Dallas, Houston, Indianapolis, Chicago, Detroit, Philadelphia, St. Louis, and Atlanta.[11] In January 2009, Hathaway appeared on BETJ in an interview and performed before an audience. Lalah Hathaway continued to support the album and she is currently schedule to perform at the Capital Jazz Festival in Columbia, MD, Essence Music Festival in New Orleans, LA, and Circle of Promise, which took place in July 2009.[12] In December, 2009 she won the Song of the Year award in the SoulTracks Readers’ Choice Award for her duet with DC singer Eric Roberson, “Dealing.”[13]
Where It All Begins (2011)
On August 14, 2011, Lalah Hathaway took to her Twitter account to release a free download of “If You Want To,”[14] the debut single from her sixth studio album Where It All Begins releasing October 18, 2011.[15]
Musical style and image

Music and voice
Hathaway, an alto and contralto, has always been identified as the eldest daughter of her father Donny Hathaway. Hathaway’s longest singing note held for 17 seconds in the performance of “Forever, For Always, For Love”. In many reviews, Lalah is often compared to her father and reviewed to be continuing his vocal style. Lalah has often been criticized[who?] for not covering any of her father’s songs, although she has appeared on others’ recorded covers, such as Take 6′s rendition of “Someday We’ll All Be Free”. Singer Natalie Cole actually stated that Lalah should herself cover at least one song, however, Hathaway replied with statement that she feels she doesn’t need to. Hathaway also mentioned during the recording process of her fifth studio album, that she doesn’t want to fit into the music industry’s current music. Lalah stated, “I don’t necessarily want to fit into what’s happening now, but I want to stand with it, doing my own thing. I would really love it if people need the record. I put a lot of myself into this album, so I hope people can hear me and understand who I am.”[16]
Although she has created a space for herself, it’s not surprising that Hathaway remains connected to her late father and his classic sound. Lalah Hathaway stated “I am his daughter and that’s the truth of who I am, every day. When I was 15, and then, 20, I didn’t get why people were asking me how I felt about him and his music. But when I turned 25, I began to understand. Like my father, I want to leave a legacy of music that makes people really feel something, whether it be happiness, sadness, grief or heartache. I also want them to appreciate my humor which I know can be difficult to interpret in a song.”[16]
[edit]Songwriting and producing
Between album projects, Hathaway, who has recorded collaborations with Marcus Miller, Meshell Ndegéocello, and Mary J. Blige, keeps her creativity nourished by taking to the global stage and contributing her voice to Daughters of Soul Tour, a musical mélange founded by comrade Sandra St. Victor, and featuring Nona Hendryx, Joyce Kennedy as well as Indira and Simone, daughters of Chaka Khan and Nina Simone.[16]
While it might seem that “On Your Own” from Self Portrait, which re-teams her with Rex Rideout and Rahsaan Patterson, is inspired by a past heartbreak, in fact, the idea for the song came to her in a dream. While Lalah Hathaway is often known for singing down tempo songs, during the period of 2004 and 2008, Hathaway has done mid-tempo songs such as “Let Go”, “Let Me Love You”, and “Better and Better”. Keeping in step with the theme of her family, Hathaway often journeys back to her childhood with “Little Girl”, which she co-produced with Rex Rideout, Rahsaan Patterson, and Sandra St. Victor.[16]
Stage
On stage, Hathaway performs the songs longer than the album version with new arrangements. In concert, the stage mainly consists of Lalah Hathaway, the back-up singers, and the band. Often at audience’s request, the vocals would be turned higher than band. Hathaway’s band would often consist of a keyboardist, guitarist, bassist, and drummer. Most songs would last over approximately five minutes. Dawn! E. Robinson of VocalMusician.com attended a Hathaway in concert and reviewed stating, “The sound in the house was strange – the band was really too loud all evening. Even when the sound guy turned LALAH’s vocals up (at the audience’s request) the band got louder. I got the impression that the sound onstage was good though, because none of the singers appeared to be over-singing.”[17] Hathaway appeared with her band on Prince’s Welcome to America opening concert at the Izod Center, December 15, 2010.

Philanthropy
Lalah Hathaway is one of the National Ambassadors for the Circle of Promise. Launched in October 2007, the campaign was created by Susan G. Komen for the Cure to educate, empower and mobilize the African-American community in the fight against breast cancer.
“The rate of Black women and girls diagnosed with breast cancer is rising at an alarming rate,” said Hathaway. “We are fighting a common enemy. Knowledge and having a take-charge mindset and attitude are critical weapons in the fight against this deadly disease. I became active because I want to be an ambassador of change. If I tell seven of my friends and they tell seven of their friends and so on, the circle will continue to expand and we’ll create a chorus of voices within the African-American community to eradicate breast cancer. I truly believe that this is a goal we can achieve together.” The Circle of Promise is nationally represented by several phenomenal African American women. Hathaway has raised money on her tours and record sales to help find a cure for women with breast cancer. She has also influenced women to get tested and tell family members to be aware of the cancer. — with Lalah Hathaway at Annual Oakland Art & Soul Festival.

San Francisco — Jon Hammond with Kevin Barrett Program Director in 50,000 watt station KTRB…ahora en Español!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KTRB
KTRB signed on in 1933, broadcasting to the Modesto, California, area until June 19, 2006.
[edit]Move to San Francisco
KTRB obtained permission from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to move to San Francisco, California and aired a classic rock music format during transmission tests. KTRB signed on the air to conduct those tests on February 1, 2007.
The station’s owner, Pappas Telecasting, established KMPH at AM 840 in Modesto to replace the moved station. It signed on late in 2006, but would sign off for good in September 2010.
As a hot talk station
The San Francisco Chronicle reported that KTRB would debut a hot talk format on March 15, 2007, featuring syndicated personalities Mancow Muller and John London, who once aired on San Francisco stations [2], as well as other syndicated hosts such as Glenn Beck. A similar article appeared a few days later in the San Jose Mercury News.[3]
In the fall of 2008, KTRB became the radio home of Stanford University football and Men’s basketball [4]
As a a sports talk station
As of 2009, KTRB is the flagship radio station for the Oakland Athletics.
On January 25, 2010, the station announced that conservative talker Michael Savage would take over the afternoon slot, four months after being let go by KNEW (910 AM).[5] That April, a replay of Savage’s show also began airing in morning drive, owing to his live show being frequently preempted due to live coverage of Athletics games.
Finding the perfect transmitter location for KTRB has been an unusually complicated process. In an effort to put the best signal possible into the Bay Area, KTRB has applied for and held many different construction permits for tower sites and directional facilities. Some were never built and expired, others were built but were sometimes impractical or the signal strength from them was deemed unsatisfactory. The most recent construction permit would have KTRB broadcasting from three different sites each day, one each for daytime hours (non-directional at 50 kW), nighttime hours (50 kW directional), and critical hours (two hours after sunrise and two hours before sunset with 40 kW directional). Its current night pattern site is situated in a remote area directly south of Livermore, three miles away far from any electrical power lines, and must be powered with propane transported by truck directly to the site.
Receivership of Comerica Bank
Following the demise of KMPH on August 31, 2010 due to lack of revenue, KTRB, on September 10, 2010, was taken over by Comerica Bank through receivership of Susan L. Uecker. The station then dismissed their entire staff except for the chief engineer[6] and ceased to carry Michael Savage, but will continue in operation with its sports format for the time being.[7] Athletics radio productions, including pregame and postgame shows, were taken over by the team itself; after the Athletics’ attempt to purchase the station collapsed, the broadcasts were moved to KBWF (95.7 FM, now KGMZ) for the 2011 season (with the Bay Bridge Series exhibition games airing on KFRC (1550 AM, now KZDG).[8]
Switch to ESPN Deportes
On Friday, June 24, 2011, KTRB was LMA’d by Deportes Media and their format changed to Spanish Sports via ESPN Deportes Radio. — with Kevin Barrett at ESPN Deportes Radio
