Jon Hammond in New York City just back from Germany music tour and 20th year at Musikmesse Frankfurt trade show…digging deep in to the archives to present a special show put together by Jon in 1993 in Frankfurt Hausen-BROTFABRIK (the old Bread Factory) Jon Hammond presenting French Pianist FRANCOISE PUJOL first time in Germany along with RICHARD BONA on bass from Cameroon & Paris, now living in NY and FRANCIS LASSOUS – drums/batterie. A crazy story about how Jon convinced Bonsedorfer Piano Company to bring their most expensive concert-grand piano for Francoise to play there. The musicians got in to an argument at sound check and Jon almost had to play the famous piano, but thankfully it worked out and the tension made for some great playing! Never before heard (I wonder why?!) Also a new track from Hungarian super-star saxophonist TONY LAKATOS’ brand-new album "Gypsy Colours" on the SKIP RECORDS label. Tony’s original composition "Mr. Fried" played and recorded with his brothers in Budapest Hungary. Thank you Tony and Lakatos Family! Jon’s trio live at Bruno’s in San Francisco featuring drummer RONNIE SMITH Jr. from Oakland CA and dedicated to United Airlines: "No Excess Baggage Blues" from Jon Hammond’s new album "NDR SESSIONS Projekt" for KYOU/KYCY 1550 AM, home of the Oakland A’s!

Major PRESS Break: HammondCast in RADIO WAVES Ben Fong-Torres !

April 15, 2006
Hi from NYC!
I am very happy to report to you that when my girlfriend returned from Tokyo yesterday, she picked up the April 9th Sunday edition of the San Francisco Chronicle newspaper and she saw in the "Pink Section" (separate special Entertainment section…very popular. Many people remove the Pink and keep it around to reference the week’s entertainment programs in SF Bay Area) in the RADIO WAVES column by Ben Fong-Torres (formerly Rolling Stone Magazine and well respected Radio Journalist, Historian and Broadcaster: http://www.benfongtorres.com ) the following write-up about my program on CBS radio station KYOU/KYCY 1550 AM:

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2006/04/09/PKGU9GIQD81.DTL
HEY, YOU: KYOU Radio (legally KYCY at 1550 AM), with its mix of podcasts and financial advice shows, may not have many listeners (the Oakland A’s broadcasts will help), but it’s got its believers — especially radio pros and musicians getting a chance at a regular show. One of them is Jon Hammond, on most weekdays at 3 p.m. "The old-time spirit lives on AM again," says Hammond, an organist, accordionist, composer and radio vet dating back to the late ’50s on KPFA. "Recently I played in Shanghai and I could listen to my show in my hotel room at the Ritz Shanghai, streaming crystal-clear on my Powerbook." In other words, you can get better reception in China than in Chinatown.

Ben Fong-Torres is a freelance writer whose column appears every other Sunday. E-mail him at fongtorres@gmail.com.

This is tantamount to being blessed by the Radio Pope! Now my program is known on the KYOU/KYCY Program Grid Guide as "Jon Hammond’s Afternoon Slide": « Back to Program Grid

How to Tour the World with only 50 Bucks – April 9, 2006

Jon Hammond here in Times Square, I have successfully toured as a musician around the world only with 50 bucks and my instrument and a rnd. trip open ticket on PIA (Pakistan International Airlines) in Sept. 1991. My journey began after being given a portable instrument (I am an organist & accordionist) by the President of a major organ company. I made a decision to give it a try. The first leg of my journey I went to Frankfurt and came back 1 year later with 100 bucks. 2 months later I went to Paris with 100 bucks and came back in a year with 250. I have just returned again with my story. http://feeds.feedburner.com/JonHammondCast

Tangent Sunset KPFA History Chronicles from ALEX COSPER – March 17, 2006

The Early Days of KPFA

Jon Hammond, an afternoon host on KYOU Radio in 2006, first hit Bay Area airwaves as a five year old on KPFA in 1958. That was about the time he started listening to radio stations that included KEWB, KFRC, KDIA and KYA. His on-air debut happened on a regular children’s show hosted by Natalie Lessinger. Aside from that show, KPFA’s programming tended to be more adult and for the most part, cutting edge compared to the rest of the dial in the late 1950s. Some of the more progressive shows even drew the attention of government officials including the FBI.

Classical music and jazz were prominent musical genres in fifties KPFA programming. Philip Elwood became the station’s authority on jazz for nearly 40 years. He hosted a Sunday afternoon show called "Jazz Review." Jon Hammond helped manage the station’s classical music library in his teen years during the sixties. Some of the classical programming on KPFA during the fifties and sixties included a show called "Chamber Music," which included Bay Area musicians, operas and regular orchestral concerts.

KPFA, of course, was always more of a talk station than a music station. One of the mainstay hosts for almost 40 years was nationally-acclaimed mystery writer Anthony Boucher, who started at the station on day one of its original broadcast on April 15, 1949. He hosted a weekly series called "Golden Voices." He also helped contribute opera music to the station’s library for many years. Alan Watts, known for his writings on Buddhism, was also a regularly featured host for decades. Film critic Pauline Kael was another host whose career at KPFA spanned decades. Henry Jacobs did a Sunday night show in the fifties called "Ethnic Music," about the homegrown music of various parts of the globe. KPFA also frequently broadcast presentations from U.C. Berkeley professors.
