Feb. 2012 Lou Colombo and Jon Hammond in Fort Myers Florida, R.I.P. Lou Colombo

From Capecodtoday
http://www.capecodtoday.com/blogs/index.php/2012/03/04/lou-colombo-killed?blog=125

Lou Colombo—Mr. Jazz on Cape Cod was killed Saturday night while exiting the parking lot at The Roadhouse Café on San Carlos Blvd. in Fort Myers, Florida.

The Musical Director at The Roadhouse Café, Richie Iannuzzi, said that Lou had just played a set before leaving to meet his wife, Noel. In addition to playing at The Roadhouse Café in Fort Myers, Lou also played at Pa Degennaro’s in Ft. Lauderdale.

The Roadhouse Café in Fort Myers is owned by Sherri Colombo and her husband Marc Neeley. It is a sister-club to the Roadhouse Café on South Street in Hyannis, Massachusetts, which is owned by David Colombo, Lou’s son, who is also the owner of Colombo’s on Main Street in Hyannis and The Black Cat Restaurant at Hyannis Harbor.

Reporting on Lou’s death saddens me greatly. Strangely enough, this very evening—Sunday—I was editing videotape of the last time I worked with Lou at Colombo’s. The video will be in an up-coming Dave Rojay Show on Channel 17, Saturday night at 9:30.

The only thing that can be said about Lou is that he was a great guy, a great friend, and a great trumpet player. He played holding his trumpet up with his right hand and blowing out of the right side of his mouth. As a trumpet player myself, I know how difficult this is; but Lou played with ease. He knew all the standards ever written and played them with great feeling and a beautiful tone and he had a tremendous rapport with his audience—a faithful long-running audience that loved him, truly.

I have so many memories of working with Lou going back many years in the past. He has appeared in several of my TV programs and he was often at Channel 17 recording for Ivy Sinclair, a producer of jazz television.

A couple of years ago, I played with Lou at the Roadhouse Café. Footage of this will also be in the up-coming Dave Rojay Show. Lou told me at the time that he was 82 years old and when I considered the strength and vitality of his playing, I was amazed.

As I type this, I am in a state of shock. A cremation for Lou is scheduled for Wednesday or Thursday in Florida with a Memorial Service to follow later on Cape Cod. My wife and I send our condolences to the entire Colombo family.

The last time I talked to Lou, we talked about a group picture of Cape Cod jazz artists scheduled for April. This photo shoot organized by jazz drummer, Bart Weisman, was to duplicate the famous photo from the past of renowned jazz artists on the steps of a brownstone in New York. No photo of the jazz artists of Cape Cod will be complete without Lou Colombo in the center.

“Meet The Incredible Sk1 Hammond with Michael Falkenstein and Jon Hammond”
First look at this exciting new keyboard product weighing in at 7 kilos, just over 15 lbs., it sounds like a real Hammond B3 organ with Leslie, or a full size grand piano, any type of famous vintage electric piano or synthesizer. This keyboard does it all and with original Hammond drawbars and it’s feather light. Sk1 has a built in USB flash drive input, the keys are ‘bullet proof’ waterfall style keys that can hold up to extreme pressure of rockin’ rock musicians, swinging jazz musicians and can even sound like a huge pipe organ. This film will blow your mind.

Jon Hammond brought his band in to the SAVOY LOUNGE on 41st St. across from Port Authority Bus Terminal and next to Carroll Music Instrument Rental & Studios where all the cats rehearsed: On tenor sax Todd Anderson, Joris Dudli on drums, Barry Finnerty guitar and Jon Hammond at the B3 organ playing some of Jon Hammond’s classic Funk Soul compositions ‘Head Phone’ and end of ‘Nu Funk (‘Hip Hop Chitlins’). Drummer Bernard Purdie had just walked in and the joint was jumping. RIP Savoy Lounge NYC!

Bernard Purdie at his then new Sonor Hi-Lite drum kit on my band Jon Hammond and The Late Rent Session Men gig we played at Cave Canem 24 First Ave Manhattan, NY

This was a very bizarre gig, I showed up and somebody from the club told me an admirer sent a huge flowers arrangement, it turned out to be from Bert Padell who I had personally invited to the gig – he sent a note with it with good luck wishes – I had the display in lobby of my building after the gig until it finally died – must have cost a fortune!

Jon Hammond We played there a few times actually. Snooze ya’ lose, we won’t be there again most likely. In over 40 years I wouldn’t call any gigs regular – some were better than others and some more steady. The days of taking up residency in one club location have pretty much been over since early 70’s in my experience. Stay tuned for my upcoming book “Weird gigs I have played” by Jon Hammond

Hi Jon — Do you have any pics from the mid 90’s with Bernard playing his Slingerland kit?

Jon Hammond Eric: Bernard always played Sonor during that time on my gigs, with Sabian cymbals – his Salmon colored Sonor Signature kit with 18″ kick always, and starting from this gig he got the hi-lite set, much lighter in weight than the Sonor Signature cans, Jon Hammond

Folks, my mighty SONY TC-158SD Portable Cassette recorder is Back on the Scene like an Akio Morita machine!
A couple of adjustments to make and then taking it in the field today for immediate assignment, Jon Hammond

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akio_Morita

Akio Morita (盛田 昭夫 Morita Akio, January 26, 1921, Nagoya, Aichi – October 3, 1999, Tokyo) was a Japanese businessman and co-founder of Sony Corporation along with Masaru Ibuka.
Akio Morita was born in the village of Kosugaya, Japan. Morita’s family was involved in sake, miso and soy sauce production in the Chita Peninsula, Aichi Prefecture since 1665. He was the oldest of four siblings and his father Kyuzaemon trained him as a child to take over the family business. Akio, however, found his true calling in mathematics and physics, and in 1944 he graduated from Osaka Imperial University with a degree in physics. He was later commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Imperial Japanese Navy, and served in World War II. During his service, Morita met his future business partner Masaru Ibuka in the Navy’s Wartime Research Committee.
On May 7, 1946, Morita and Ibuka founded Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo Kabushiki Kaisha (Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Corporation, the forerunner of Sony Corporation) with about 20 employees and initial capital of ¥190,000. Ibuka was 38 years old, Morita, 25. Morita’s family invested in Sony during the early period and was the largest shareholder.
In 1949, the company developed magnetic recording tape and in 1950, sold the first tape recorder in Japan. In 1957, it produced a pocket-sized radio (the first to be fully transistorized), and in 1958, Morita and Ibuka decided to rename their company Sony (sonus is Latin for sound, and Sonny-boys the most common American expression).[2] Morita was an advocate for all the products made by the Sony Corporation. However, since the radio was slightly too big to fit in a shirt pocket, Morita made his employees wear shirts with slightly larger pockets to give the radio a “pocket sized” appearance. In 1960, it produced the first transistor television in the world. In 1973, Sony received an Emmy Award for its Trinitron television-set technology. In 1975, it released the first Betamax home video recorder, a year before VHS format came out. In 1979, the Walkman was introduced, making it the world’s first portable music player. In 1984, Sony launched the Discman series which extended their Walkman brand to portable CD products.
In 1960, the Sony Corporation of America (SONAM, currently abbreviated as SCA) was established in the United States. In 1961, Sony Corporation was the first Japanese company to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange, in the form of American Depositary Receipts (ADRs), which are traded over-the-counter. Sony bought CBS Records Group, which consisted of Columbia Records, Epic Records and other CBS labels in 1988 and Columbia Pictures Entertainment (Columbia Pictures, TriStar Pictures and others) in 1989.
On November 25, 1994, Morita stepped down as Sony chairman after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage while playing tennis. He was succeeded by Norio Ohga, who had joined the company in the 1950s after sending Morita a letter denouncing the poor quality of the company’s tape recorders — with Akio Morita

Mikell’s was a jazz club on the corner of 97th Street and Columbus Avenue, New York.
Run by Mike Mikell[1] and Pat Mikell, from 1969 to 1991 it was a regular venue for New York’s top studio and session musicians, who would turn up for jam sessions with major soul, funk and jazz artists visiting the city.[2] Paul Shaffer, bandleader for CBS’s Late Show with David Letterman, called Mikell’s “soul heaven”.[2]
Among the performers and bands associated with Mikell’s are Stuff, the alliance of studio musicians that played almost weekly at Mikell’s in the 1970s.[2]
Writer James Baldwin’s brother David worked as a bartender at the club, thereby attracting patronage from Baldwin as well as other authors, including Toni Morrison, Amiri Baraka and Maya Angelou.
Stephane Grappelli, French jazz violinist who co-founded the Quintette du Hot Club de France, performed at Mikell’s in the mid-1970s.
The band Stuff, formed in 1974, was closely associated with Mikell’s, playing there three nights a week until 1980, with jam sessions taking place with visiting soul, jazz and funk stars and singers such as Stevie Wonder and Joe Cocker.
n early 1980, the club served for rehearsals for Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers Big Band, which included Wynton Marsalis, and which would result in the live album Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers Big Band – Live at Montreux and North Sea (1980).[3] Other artists appearing at the club in the 1980s included Milt Jackson, Ray Brown, Cedar Walton and Mickey Roker (June 1983[4]), Paquito D’Rivera (January 1984[5]).
Mikell’s closed in 1991
John Tropea – Live at Mikell’s New York – Recorded live in 1980, released 1994.

October 9 1998 Jon Hammond brought legendary studio drummer Bernard Purdie ‘The Hit Maker’ back to San Francisco to play for the first time since the Live Aretha Franklin at Fillmore recordings in March of 1971. The concert went down in North Beach San Francisco at COCODRIE Club. Here they are playing a Jon Hammond Band original ‘Hip Hop Chitlins’ with an explosive and impromptu drum solo from Bernard that is pure Funk. Frankfurt Germany — “Go Green” forget the tour bus, push your gear to the gig and ride the rails – Jon Hammond

*Note: Excerpt from article in April 2008 ALLEGRO Magazine of Local 802 Musicians Union in honor of Earth Day April 22 and Environmentalism “Beat On The Street”: I am about to go over to Germany for my annu- al music tour with my Hammond organ so I’d like to tell you my way of doing a “green tour” that I have perfected. In the past, a Hammond B3 organ weighed 425 pounds (without the Leslie speaker) so it was not possible for me to take one to Europe. In 1991, I got the first really portable model. It was one of the first 10 prototypes of the Ham- mond-Suzuki XB-2, with multi-voltage for any- where in the world. I flew over to Germany with it on Pakistan Airlines. I found that by using a Kart-A-Bag Super 600 heavy-duty luggage cart with “stair slides” (like what UPS and FedEx uses), I could hoist it up on to any train or bus. I traveled all over Europe this way, and was pic- tured doing it eventually in a magazine ad for Kart- A-Bag for quite a while. They had a contest going for a long time where they would give away one “Ham- mond Super 600 Kart-A-Bag” every month from a drawing. I jokingly refer to it as my “tour bus.” I see a lot of bands touring with big tour buses and they look real nice and comfy but they also burn a lot of fuel. With my technique I ride on the high speed trains in Germany, the local trains, up and down in the Metro of Paris and in Prague on the street cars. Jon Hammond *Photo: Organist and Local 802 member Jon Hammond with his touring rig waiting for a train in Germany. One way to go green is to skip the tour bus altogether. — at Frankfurt (Main) Hauptbahnhof

Something told me I better go down and see Lou last week R.I.P. Louis Colombo the Greatest from Jon Hammond
Posted on December 15, 2012
Folks, something told me I had better get on down to see my main man Lou Colombo last week

in Fort Myers FL, I played on Lou’s band for 2.5 years in Cape Cod at the Wychmere Harbor Club

and Thompson’s Clam Bar in Harwich Port MA. It was an important time of my life and career and

he was always very generous to me, kept me on my toes throwing tunes at me in all keys the music

never stopped once we hit.

I just saw Lou a few days ago in Fort Myers FL at the gig he was playing at his Daughter Sherri’s restaurant

and hub Marc Neeley – Roadhouse Cafe, he was at the top of his game, playing great as ever and looking like a

million dollars. I am deeply saddened to receive terrible tragic news this morning from Lou’s fine trombonist

Nelson E. Foucht that Lou was tragically killed last night just 4 blocks from Roadhouse Cafe coming home from the

gig. My deepest condolences to the Colombo Family, Lou’s Wife Noel, daughters Lori, Sherri, David all his 6 kids, extended

Family of friends and musicians. I am totally blown away, thankful that I had the opportunity to know him and play with

him nightly back in the 70′s and then to see and hear him again at the end of his life, thanks Lou!

Jon made the recording with his Nakamichi 550 tape deck, it is a remarkable recording of the Lou Colombo Band which played nightly for luminaries such as Speaker of The House Tip O’Neill for all his private parties and the Kennedy Clan.

Happy Channukah 2012 / Jewish Holiday Calendar 5773 from NYC folks! We have a huge Menorah in our building in Manhattan, Jon Hammond

*Obama displays menorah rescued from Sandy destruction in Hanukkah ceremony
http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/272949-obama-displays-menorah-rescued-from-sandy-destruction-in-hanukkah-ceremony
President Obama called a 90-year-old menorah saved from a Long Island temple ravaged by Hurricane Sandy a “symbol of perseverance” at the White House Hanukkah ceremony on Thursday.

The president said the menorah stood as one of the “powerful symbols of [the Hanukkah] spirit” in brief remarks before around 600 guests. The lamp, crafted of solid brass, was saved from the Temple Israel of Long Beach. The house of worship was badly damaged as the hurricane battered the New York coast.

“I’m willing to bet it will survive another 90 years, and another 90 years after that,” the president said. “Tonight it serves as another symbol of perseverance.”
Obama, who was joined by first lady Michelle Obama, added that on the sixth night of the Jewish holiday, “we pray its light will bring victims of Sandy and all Americans to a brighter tomorrow.”
The menorah was lit by Rabbi Larry Bazer, an Afghanistan war veteran. Obama noted that Bazer had been deployed in Kabul, Afghanistan, as a military chaplain over the last Hanukkah, joking he had turned down an invitation to the White House ceremony.

“We don’t get that very often,” Obama said. “Usually when we invite people they come.”

Entertainment for the event was provided by the West Point Jewish Chapel Cadet Choir and the U.S. Marine Chamber Orchestra

Wishing a very happy & healthy birthday to my friend, the Honorable Terence Hallinan! *served as District Attorney San Francisco – here Jon Hammond and Terence Hallinan on the occasion of his birthday party, with music provided by Jon Hammond Band – Nancy Pelosi was there, Mayor Willie Brown was there, the whole Hallinan family clan, great party!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terence_Hallinan
Terence Hallinan (born December 4, 1936) is an American attorney and politician from San Francisco, California. He is the second of six sons born to leftist attorney Vincent Hallinan and his wife Vivian. He currently works in private practice at the Law Chambers Building at 345 Franklin Street in San Francisco, (415) 863-1430.
Hallinan was educated at the London School of Economics, University of California, Berkeley, and University of California, Hastings College of the Law. He successfully contested the State Bar’s negative evaluation of his character, based on his engagement in civil disobedience in opposing racist discriminatory employment practices by certain San Francisco businesses in the 1960s, before the Supreme Court of California.[1]
As an attorney, he successfully argued to have the murder convictions of serial-killer Juan Corona overturned on appeal, and represented Corona in his retrial which resulted in 25 convictions for murder and a life sentence.[2]
He served on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, losing his first bid for that office to Harvey Milk in 1977, and later was the district attorney of San Francisco for two terms. While serving as DA, he became a notable opponent of capital punishment. He also was a strong advocate on behalf of decriminalizing prostitution. In his tenure he supported medical marijuana and is now an advisor of NORML.[3]

Jon Hammond for Alcatel-Lucent / Bell Labs:
“On stage, on television or on the radio waves
everyday I feel lucky because I’m ALWAYS ON!
Jon Hammond
Musician, television personality and radio broadcaster Jon Hammond boarded a Concorde in 1981 to travel from New York to Paris at supersonic speed, and he never slowed down.
Jon travels the world, touring in Europe and Asia two or three times each year while broadcasting his “HammondCast” morning radio show seven days a week. At home in the United States, Jon splits his time between New York City and San Francisco and performs four to five concerts each month at local hospitals, nursing homes and prisons. His cable television program, “The Jon Hammond Show,” is in its 25th year and going strong.
“In my business, it’s essential to be contactable 24/7. I couldn’t organize as much as I do without being ALWAYS ON.”
Inspired by the Beatles and fascinated by the radio (he built a crystal radio at the age of five), Jon knew he was destined to be a musician. Although that’s a departure from tradition – Jon’s father and grandfather were physicians – Jon carries on the family business in his own way by performing in some of the very hospitals where his father once practiced medicine.
“I’ve seen people get out of their wheelchairs and dance more times than I can count, so I’m happy I can make a difference playing for those who are less fortunate than me.”
Jon has not forgotten those who opened doors for him when he was first starting out in music and broadcasting, and now he uses his radio and cable television shows to do the same for deserving young talent.
Like Jon, we at Alcatel-Lucent are passionate about connecting people through communications technology. In our Bell Labs locations around the world, we’re working on new and exciting innovations in next-generation broadband technology to ensure people like Jon can find even more creative ways to share music, moments and memories. http://www.HammondCast.com

Also a virtuoso guitar player with his own definitive, unique playing style and “ear”, Joe has jammed with the likes of John Entwistle and Jack Bruce.

R.I.P. James Moody – passed away just about exactly 2 years ago – Jon Hammond

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Moody_(saxophonist)
James Moody (March 26, 1925 – December 9, 2010) was an American jazz saxophone and flute player. He was best known for his hit “Moody’s Mood for Love,” an improvisation based on “I’m in the Mood for Love”; in performance, he often sang Eddie Jefferson’s vocalese lyrics for the tune, which Eddie had fit to Moody’s famous solo.

James Moody was born in Savannah, Georgia. Growing up in New Jersey, he was attracted to the saxophone after hearing George Holmes Tate, Don Byas, and various saxophonists who played with Count Basie, and later also took up the flute. He joined the US Army Air Corps in 1943 and played in the “negro band” on the segregated base.[1] Following his discharge from the military in 1946 he played bebop with Dizzy Gillespie[2] for two years. Moody later played with Gillespie in 1964, where his colleagues in the Gillespie group, pianist Kenny Barron and guitarist Les Spann, would be musical collaborators in the coming decades.
In 1948 he recorded his first session for Blue Note Records, the first in a long recording career playing both saxophone and flute. That same year he relocated to Europe, where he stayed for three years, saying he had been “scarred by racism” in the U.S.[1] His European work, including the first recording of “Moody’s Mood for Love”, which became a hit in 1952,[3] saw him add the alto saxophone to his repertoire and helped to establish him as recording artist in his own right, and formed part of the growth of European jazz. Then in 1952, he returned to the U.S. to a recording career with Prestige Records and others, playing flute and saxophone in bands that included musicians such as Pee Wee Moore and others.
