Jon Hammond jams at the Electro-Voice stand: AMAC 2014 http://www.electrovoice.com/pressrelease.php?id=1651 The music products industry gathered again on Queensland’s Gold Coast for professional development sessions and a two-day trade show. Almost 500 professionals, covering a wide range of Australian music industry suppliers and retailers, took part at the Australian Music Association Convention – held at the ever-popular Jupiter’s Casino.

The convention featured a number of notable key speakers and accomplished musicians to keep attendees educated as well as entertained. Amongst the key figures were Larry Morton, current NAMM Chairman and President of Hal Leonard Corporation; Jon Hammond, renowned Hammond organ player and founder of the Jon Hammond Band; Ambre Hammond (no-relation to Jon) leading Australian piano musician and Guinness record holder for receiving Associate and Licentiate Diplomas of music at the age of 11; and Lloyd Spiegel, one of Australia’s leading blues guitarists.

Bosch Communications Systems, a regular at AMAC, exhibited the latest products from our Electro-Voice and Dynacord brands, including EV’s ZLX, ELX and ETX Powered Loudspeaker families, and Dynacord’s TS Vertical Array Cabinets, the tiny but feature-packed PM 502 Powered Mixer, and the versatile AXM 12A Coaxial Powered Monitor with onboard DSP.

For the first time in EV’s history, the brand had three “best-in-class” loudspeaker families on display covering entry-level through to pro-audio markets. ZLX loudspeakers are the number one selling powered speakers in the American market and have won Best of Show at NAMM 2013. The 2000-W ETX Powered Loudspeakers have been labelled as the most advanced product in its price range and have won Best of Show at NAMM 2014. Sitting in between is the ever-popular ELX range which represents a high-quality sound system at a mid-range price.

The ETX Powered Loudspeaker display drew a lot of attention during the show, including that of Jon Hammond, one of the finest B3 players in the world. Jon reminisced about his first experience with EV speakers back in 1964, when he installed EV SRO speakers in a Fender Bandmaster cabinet.

“I have a particular fondness for EV speakers. My very first pro amplifier was a 1964 blonde Fender Bandmaster in which I installed the white EV SRO Speakers. Yes, I lugged that 2 x 12 speaker box around everywhere and it was impossible to blow it up – my whole band would plug in to it, we thought in those days because the amp was called the Bandmaster that the whole band should plug in to it, bass and all – no problem, it was loud and clear!”

After swapping a few stories Jon was curious to see how his Hammond Sk1 would sound with the ETX loudspeakers. Following a quick connection via a Dynacord PowerMate 600, Jon belted a few tunes just before the close of day one of the exhibition. He promised to come back the following day with a jazz guitarist who turned out to be Chris Connolly, a well known figure in the audio and music products industry. While setting up for the jam session Simon Ert, a jazz percussionist representing Gretsch drums on the neighbouring stand, volunteered to complete the trio. What followed was half an hour of cool jazz tunes and sweet sound.

Group photo, from left to right: Simon Ert on Gretsch Drums, Chris Connolly on Grover Jackson Guitar and the legendary “Buchanan Hammer” EV 664 Dynamic Cardioid Microphone, and Jon Hammond on Hammond Sk1, mixed using Dynacord PowerMate 600 and played through ETX Powered Loudspeakers.

Check out an excerpt of the performance on YouTube:

http://youtu.be/SPHi-VBY6zI

“I love coming to the AMAC shows, in just a few years I have forged some lasting friendships and am fortunate enough to meet some really outstanding musicians,” said Jon. “The timing was perfect to have a session like that what we did – thank you so much for accommodating us with the superb EV powered speakers. I heard from friends who were all the way across the hall that they could hear us clear as a bell. It was so much fun, that’s the kind of thing I live for and only happens in a special place and people such as the EV stand at AMAC!”

Electro-Voice speakers were also present on the Casio Sound Technology stand. Two ZLX 12” powered speakers and a ZXA1 sub gave the Casio guys all they needed to show off their DJ and keyboard skills a few times each day. Needless to say, they were very happy with the sound as well.

Bosch Communications would like to thank AMAC, Jon Hammond, Chris Connolly, Simon Ert, and all the visitors and exhibitors for making AMAC 2014 an experience to remember!

Jon Hammond visit with his piano teacher Tony Germain:
“So good to see my piano teacher main man Tony Germain 40 years later from the first day we met on Scheduling Day 1973, looking good Tony! Greatest piano and Hammond organ teacher folks!

Tony taught so many players well and created the organ department (long story!) Chairing the PIano Department, (he has a nice chair in his office and superb Steinway Grand Piano) – if you are lucky enough to be a student at Berklee and get to study with Tony Germain, then you are living under the lucky star – Tony is the Man!! Thanks for everything you showed me Tony, straightened me out big time” – Jon Hammond
*Return of the Student –

Here I am with my Piano Teacher main man Tony Germain 40 years to the day later from the first time we sat down together folks – interview coming soon, many thanks Tony! Jon Hammond
http://www.berklee.edu/people/tony-germain
Position: Assistant Chair
Department: Piano

Tony’s Steinway Grand Piano

“I think I might have been one of Berklee’s first graduates with what today is called the performance major in piano. So as assistant chair, I have a vested interest in making sure we’re still preparing piano, keyboard, and organ students, without being in any way style prejudiced. I also took the position to have a little bit more involvement with the curriculum—to see what I could personally add or help create.”

“When I went to Berklee, Ted Pease, Phil Wilson, and Mike Rendish were my role models and my teachers. They set the standard for what I’d become and how I would teach. They were all very good to me, and I could see how much they loved it. Here at Berklee, I’m giving back to something that has given me everything. I often describe Berklee as a musical Fantasy Island. I just don’t know where else I’d be happy.”

“Prior to becoming assistant chair of the Piano Department, I taught pretty much everything across the board for 33 years: harmony, ear training, arranging, ensembles. I created the Harmonic Ear Training course and taught it from about 1978 until I became assistant chair. I’m equally in love with private and classroom teaching, and have done it all my adult life. I probably get more out of it than my students do. But hopefully I inspire students to further their interests in whichever style of performance they desire—it’s my job to prepare them for the long haul. I still teach Survey of Piano Styles: History of Jazz Piano. I didn’t want to give it up. And I didn’t want to not teach entirely, because you lose touch if you’re out of the classroom.”

Who is Jon Hammond?

Jon began his musical career at age 12 in the San Francisco Bay Area playing organ and accordion in bands and solo engagements, first recording studio dates 1968 when he met Robert Moog who personally delivered the Moog III to San Francisco Radical Laboratories where Jon was working at the time and jamming daily with members of Quicksilver Messenger Service, he next joined original rock band Hades with which he played until moving East to attend Berklee.

Playing 7 nights a week in Boston’s notorious Combat Zone next lead to touring with successful show band Easy Living and then became house organist at the exclusive Wychmere Harbor Club Cape Cod MA where he played private parties for Tip O’Neill Speaker of The House. Returning to SF for a reunion concert in 1980 with Eddie Money and members of Tower of Power, next Jon moved to Europe where he lived and played for a number of years, still playing annually where he has an enthusiastic following.
*Return of the Student – Here I am with my Piano Teacher main man Tony Germain 40 years to the day later from the first time we sat down together folks – interview coming soon, many thanks Tony! Jon Hammond
http://www.berklee.edu/people/tony-germain
Position: Assistant Chair
Department: Piano

Thanks for your tech support Shannon Sullivan on my presentation “Classic Hammond Sound…In A Suitcase!”™ and debut of 73 & 88 note models of Hammond Sk1 at AMAC 2013 – Jon Hammond

“In workshop form Jon Hammond (USA) will be presenting the new Hammond B3 Mark 2 Digital Organ styled identically to the famous B3, that was produced between 1955 and 1975, with the new Leslie 3300W. Jon’s skills as one of the world’s most traveled Hammond players lead to many great ideas in exploring the world of Hammond drawbars and Leslie tone cabinets. Included in the workshop is the launch of the 73 and 88 note version of Europe’s stage keyboard of the year 2012 the Sk1. To hear the comparison to the B3 will be more than interesting. — with Shannon Sullivan in Gold Coast, Queensland

He drms in a jazz band at night, then tours motorcycle shops by day. “But who would have imagined,” he says, “that I’d be doing it in Shanghai!” Woody, 59, is a fixture at the Portman Ritz-Carlton Hotel lounge, but his real claim to fame is a motorbike with sidecar on display in the lobby. The Chang Jiang is a Chinese knockoff of the classic 1930s BMW R-71. During World War II, the Germans gave the design to Russia, which passed it to China. Woody fell in love with it on a 1998 trip to Beijing. He bought one, and another. Soon, he had shops refurbishing them. Now he’s a top vendor of the bikes, which have a global cult following. This was a special occasion because my bandmates from California came over so I had them on the gig with addition of Sgt. This was a very special place frequented by all the musicians after there gigs. A 5 hour gig until wee hours of the morning, Live Music 7 days a week in rotation with musicians like Piano George, Izio Gross, Wilson de Oliveira and members of HR Bigband. Regina introduced me to Tony Lakatos the Hungarian tenor saxophonist who I play with still today. The club was not large but it had a great atmosphere and was always a safe place to hang out until as late as 5AM. Description:This record marks a new beginning for me, and would like to dedicate it to all those who like myself are striking out on their own and going it alone. Don’t be afraid to follow your dreams. I did and now this record is for you! On November 5th, 2002 at 11:00 hours I entered in to Studio “D” of UNIQUE RECORDING STUDIOS in Times Square NYC with my producer/engineer Joe Berger along with S.F.Bay Area musicians Ronnie Smith (drums) and Alex Budman (tenor sax). I had just come back from performing in Shanghai at the first MUSIC CHINA. My mission was clear…because of all our busy schedules and logistical problems, we had a 4 hour window to play down 13 of my original composition live to Pro Tools recording format with Joe Berger at the controls, ably assisted by Health Aiken. From the first tune i knew that this would be my best record ever. Twelve of the tracks made this record and the 13th will be on the next record! As I was telling the musicians…on this record each of us is larger that life. Iam very proud to feature the underiable pocket feel of Ronnie Smith, the great left-handed funk drummer from East Oakland. Also it is my pleasure to feature on the finest and most musical tenor saxophonists to come out of the Bay Area in a long time: Alex Budman. The incredible guitar work features my long-time partner Joe Berger (Ham-Berger Productions). Joe has played with John Entwistle, Vangelis and many greats, plus he is responsible for the fine sound of this recording and mastering Joe joined the band on tracks 1 & 3, title song Hammond’s Bolero and Cannonball 99. Bobby and Joanne Nathan’s Unique Recording Studios was the perfect studio and environment for our live recording. Special thanks to Bobby and Joanne and the Unique staff! I fired up the house HAMMOND organ and felt right at home immediately. Although we cut these tunes in one session, (a new speed record at Unique Recording Studios!). It took my whole life to refine my songs and get to this point where I was ready to record them…and ALSO to select musicians who could not only play their asses off, but are very nice cats who play my music with much enthusiasm and uplifting spirit. Like all bandleaders I have had more than my share of nightmare situations with “difficult” musicians so I am always happy when I can record and play with trouble-free musicians on the ban! These are the guys. This was Ronnie’s first trip to New York City. The night before our session he and Alex went to hear the Village Vanguard Monday Night Bigband while I stayed home in my Times Square apartment preparing the music for the sessions. I have plenty to be thankful for this year and so I would like to thank all of the people who helped me somehow to make this album of my compositions a reality. It’s been a long time coming even though we recorded it in record time. Please read my special thanks and if i somehow omitted your name and you know you belong on the list, please forgive me as my mind gets a little cloudy teh older I get, but I didn’t really forget even one person who has helped me on this long journey up to the release of “Hammond’s Bolero”. Now buy the record and come out to our gigs! Come by the bandstand and say hi, I’m easy to find…I’ll either be behind my HAMMOND organ or strapped in to my EXCELSIOR Accordion. As my friends from Russia and Ukraine say. “Nastarovya!” However you say it….here’s to your health and my romantic music here on this disc comes from our hearts to all people around the world in the international language of instrumental music…in the rhythm of life! If you bought this album I would like to personally say “Thankyou!”…then, on the other hand, if you might be one of those who somehow weasled a free copy of “Hammond’s Bolero” off of me by telling us that we would get a gig or radio play, etc…I hope you’ll really come through! And if I catch you playing this in your restaurant or club and we still haven’t gotten a gig…expect to have the disc confiscated immediately by yours’ truly…it wouldn’t be the first time! Enjoy the music everybody and the fine playing by my great musicians!” Contact:jonhammond@jonhammondband.com
