“Jon Hammond Stolen Giulietti Classic model 127, Serial No. 14258 – USA
by Harley Jones
Well known musician Jon Hammond has now found the serial number of his stolen accordion, a Giulietti Classic model 127 Serial No. 14258.

This accordion was stolen from his mother’s house in Boston, MA in 1976. Picture right of Jon Hammond circa 1976, playing the stolen accordion.

At the time, John was attending Berklee College of Music and this accordion has a history, being an accordion of the great pioneer USA accordionist John Molinari.

If you have any information about the accordion, please email Jon Hammond at:
jonhammond@jonhammondband.com — with Giulietti Accordions USA and GIULIETTI Accordions at Berklee College of Music.

Like my friend Dick Contino the great accordionist star once told me: “When I break out the accordion it’s like saying hello to an old friend!” Here I’m playing a blues with my custom built Excelsior accordion made by hand by the good folks at Excelsior Accordions & Pigini in Castelfidardo Italy – I have electronics on this instrument, but what you hear here is the pure sound of the high quality steel reeds, I really love this instrument. Mostly I keep it at home because the airlines can be a little rough on the instruments, I was lucky to get it home in one piece from Italy. Always a pleasure to play, enjoy folks, Jon Hammond Band http://www.accordionradio.com/ *Note: for those of you who don’t know, musicians use the term “Wood Shedding” for practicing at home. When a musician says he or she is shedding, that usually means they are home or in a hotel somewhere practicing with their instrument – JH

Lots of traffic around famous Alcatraz Island today, and Mount Tamalpais is looking good in Marin County! Jon Hammond Band
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcatraz_Island

Alcatraz Island is located in the San Francisco Bay, 1.5 miles (2.4 km) offshore from San Francisco, California, United States.[2] Often referred to as “The Rock”, the small island was developed with facilities for a lighthouse, a military fortification, a military prison (1868), and a federal prison from 1933 until 1963.[5] Beginning in November 1969, the island was occupied for more than 19 months by a group of Aboriginal peoples from San Francisco who were part of a wave of Native activism across the nation with public protests through the 1970s. In 1972, Alcatraz became a national recreation area and received designation as a National Historic Landmark in 1986.
Today, the island’s facilities are managed by the National Park Service as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area; it is open to tours. Visitors can reach the island by ferry ride from Pier 33, near Fisherman’s Wharf, San Francisco. Hornblower Cruises and Events, operating under the name Alcatraz Cruises, is the official ferry provider to and from the island. Hornblower launched the nation’s first hybrid propulsion ferry in 2008, the Hornblower Hybrid, which now serves the island, docking at the Alcatraz Wharf.[6]
It is home to the abandoned prison, the site of the oldest operating lighthouse on the West Coast of the United States, early military fortifications, and natural features such as rock pools and a seabird colony (mostly Western Gulls, cormorants, and egrets). According to a 1971 documentary on the History of Alcatraz, the island measures 1,675 feet (511 m) by 590 feet (180 m) and is 135 feet (41 m) at highest point during mean tide.[7] However, the total area of the island is reported to be 22 acres (8.9 ha).[2]
Landmarks on the island include the Main Cellhouse, Dining Hall, Library, Lighthouse, the ruins of the Warden’s House and Officers Club, Parade Grounds, Building 64, Water Tower, New Industries Building, Model Industries Building, and the Recreation Yard…

Mount Tamalpais (/tæməlˈpaɪ.ɨs/;[3] known locally as Mount Tam) is a peak in Marin County, California, United States, often considered symbolic of Marin County. Much of Mount Tamalpais is protected within public lands such as Mount Tamalpais State Park and the Mount Tamalpais Watershed.
Elevation 2,574 ft (785 m) NAVD 88[1]
Prominence 2,451 ft (747 m)[1]

Mount Tamalpais is the highest peak in the Marin Hills, which are part of the Northern California Coast Ranges. The elevation at the East Peak, its highest point, is 2,574 feet (785 m). The West Peak, the mountain’s second highest peak, where a radar dome currently stands, is at about 2,563 feet (781 m).[4] It stood over 2,600 feet (792 m) before the summit was flattened for the radar dome construction. The mountain is clearly visible from the city of San Francisco and the East Bay region.
The majority of the mountain is contained in protected public lands, including Mount Tamalpais State Park, Muir Woods National Monument, and the Mount Tamalpais Watershed. It adjoins the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (which in turn adjoins Point Reyes National Seashore) as well as several Marin County Open Space Preserves. This provides nearly 40 miles (64 km) of continuous publicly accessible open space. Some of the lower slopes of Mount Tamalpais fall within several cities and unincorporated communities of Marin County, including Mill Valley, Tamalpais-Homestead Valley, Stinson Beach, and Kentfield. These areas are generally developed, consisting of mostly low-density single-family homes.
Broadway musicals are performed outdoors, several times each summer, in the stone amphitheatre on the southern side of Mt. Tam. — at Alcatraz Island

Folks, my mighty SONY TC-158SD Portable Cassette recorder is Back on the Scene like an Akio Morita machine!
A couple of adjustments to make and then taking it in the field today for immediate assignment, Jon Hammond

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akio_Morita

Akio Morita (盛田 昭夫 Morita Akio, January 26, 1921, Nagoya, Aichi – October 3, 1999, Tokyo) was a Japanese businessman and co-founder of Sony Corporation along with Masaru Ibuka.
Akio Morita was born in the village of Kosugaya, Japan. Morita’s family was involved in sake, miso and soy sauce production in the Chita Peninsula, Aichi Prefecture since 1665. He was the oldest of four siblings and his father Kyuzaemon trained him as a child to take over the family business. Akio, however, found his true calling in mathematics and physics, and in 1944 he graduated from Osaka Imperial University with a degree in physics. He was later commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Imperial Japanese Navy, and served in World War II. During his service, Morita met his future business partner Masaru Ibuka in the Navy’s Wartime Research Committee.
On May 7, 1946, Morita and Ibuka founded Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo Kabushiki Kaisha (Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Corporation, the forerunner of Sony Corporation) with about 20 employees and initial capital of ¥190,000. Ibuka was 38 years old, Morita, 25. Morita’s family invested in Sony during the early period and was the largest shareholder.
In 1949, the company developed magnetic recording tape and in 1950, sold the first tape recorder in Japan. In 1957, it produced a pocket-sized radio (the first to be fully transistorized), and in 1958, Morita and Ibuka decided to rename their company Sony (sonus is Latin for sound, and Sonny-boys the most common American expression).[2] Morita was an advocate for all the products made by the Sony Corporation. However, since the radio was slightly too big to fit in a shirt pocket, Morita made his employees wear shirts with slightly larger pockets to give the radio a “pocket sized” appearance. In 1960, it produced the first transistor television in the world. In 1973, Sony received an Emmy Award for its Trinitron television-set technology. In 1975, it released the first Betamax home video recorder, a year before VHS format came out. In 1979, the Walkman was introduced, making it the world’s first portable music player. In 1984, Sony launched the Discman series which extended their Walkman brand to portable CD products.
In 1960, the Sony Corporation of America (SONAM, currently abbreviated as SCA) was established in the United States. In 1961, Sony Corporation was the first Japanese company to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange, in the form of American Depositary Receipts (ADRs), which are traded over-the-counter. Sony bought CBS Records Group, which consisted of Columbia Records, Epic Records and other CBS labels in 1988 and Columbia Pictures Entertainment (Columbia Pictures, TriStar Pictures and others) in 1989.
On November 25, 1994, Morita stepped down as Sony chairman after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage while playing tennis. He was succeeded by Norio Ohga, who had joined the company in the 1950s after sending Morita a letter denouncing the poor quality of the company’s tape recorders — with Akio Morita

Mikell’s was a jazz club on the corner of 97th Street and Columbus Avenue, New York.
Run by Mike Mikell[1] and Pat Mikell, from 1969 to 1991 it was a regular venue for New York’s top studio and session musicians, who would turn up for jam sessions with major soul, funk and jazz artists visiting the city.[2] Paul Shaffer, bandleader for CBS’s Late Show with David Letterman, called Mikell’s “soul heaven”.[2]
Among the performers and bands associated with Mikell’s are Stuff, the alliance of studio musicians that played almost weekly at Mikell’s in the 1970s.[2]
Writer James Baldwin’s brother David worked as a bartender at the club, thereby attracting patronage from Baldwin as well as other authors, including Toni Morrison, Amiri Baraka and Maya Angelou.
Stephane Grappelli, French jazz violinist who co-founded the Quintette du Hot Club de France, performed at Mikell’s in the mid-1970s.
The band Stuff, formed in 1974, was closely associated with Mikell’s, playing there three nights a week until 1980, with jam sessions taking place with visiting soul, jazz and funk stars and singers such as Stevie Wonder and Joe Cocker.
n early 1980, the club served for rehearsals for Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers Big Band, which included Wynton Marsalis, and which would result in the live album Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers Big Band – Live at Montreux and North Sea (1980).[3] Other artists appearing at the club in the 1980s included Milt Jackson, Ray Brown, Cedar Walton and Mickey Roker (June 1983[4]), Paquito D’Rivera (January 1984[5]).
Mikell’s closed in 1991

This marks the 20th anniversary of this wonderful concert, yes it was 20 years ago folks! Incredible playing by these musicians – Francoise Pujol who is my personal favorite pianist in France today – Jazz and Classical. Along with her emerging star musicians: Bassist Richard Bona the phenom bass player born in Cameroon and now living in Brooklyn, and the very tasteful drumming (and sometimes explosive!) of Francis Lassus of Paris.

NDR television buildings in Hamburg
Studios in Hamburg are split into two locations, both of them within the borough of Eimsbüttel: Television studios are located in the quarter of Lokstedt as the radio studios are located in the quarter of Rotherbaum, a little closer to the city centre. In addition to these, there are further regional studios, also comprising both television and radio facilities. They are located in the state capitals Hanover, Kiel and Schwerin as well as at the ARD’s national studios in Berlin. The NDR also maintains other regional offices within its four state territories.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tal_Farlow
Talmage Holt Farlow (June 7, 1921 – July 25, 1998) was an American jazz guitarist. Nicknamed the “Octopus”, for his extremely large hands spread over the fretboard as if they were tentacles, he is considered one of the all-time great jazz guitarists. Where other similar players of his day combined rhythmic chords with linear melodies, Farlow preferred placing single notes together in clusters, varying between harmonically richened tones based on a startling new technique.
Biography

Farlow was born in Greensboro, North Carolina in 1921. Nearly as famous for his reluctance to perform publicly as for his outstanding abilities, he did not take up the instrument until he was 21, but within a year was playing professionally and in 1948 was with Marjorie Hyams’ band. While with the Red Norvo Trio from 1949–1953, Farlow became famous in the jazz world. His huge hands and ability to play rapid yet light lines, which earned him the nickname “Octopus”, made him one of the top guitarists of the era. After six months with Artie Shaw’s Gramercy Five in 1953, Farlow put together his own group, which for a time included pianist Eddie Costa.
In 1958, Farlow retired from full-time performing and settled in Sea Bright, New Jersey, returning to a career as a sign painter. He continued to play occasional dates in local clubs, however.[1] In 1962 the Gibson Guitar Corporation, with Farlow’s participation, produced the “Tal Farlow” model in their prestigious Artist Model line. The guitar seen in the picture at right is a prototype model. The production model has a mandolin-style scroll at the top of the body.
Farlow only made one record as a leader during 1960–1975, but emerged a bit more often during 1976–1984, recording for Concord fairly regularly before largely disappearing again. He was profiled in the documentary film, Talmage Farlow, made in 1980/81. The guitarist can be heard on his records for Blue Note (a 10″ LP in 1954), Norgran (later Verve, 1954–60), and Prestige (1969), aa well those for Concord. He died of cancer at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City on July 25, 1998 at the age of 77.[2]

Recreating LATE RENT CD Product
Some notes about the LATE RENT product you are holding in your hand: They say history repeats itself. In the case of LATE RENT it is partially true, but now in 2005 I have taken the opportunity to take control of my music and visuals bringing them to you in the absolute highest quality thanks to my outstanding team of specialists. It has been a long road with many detours along the way but thankfully all the master recordings are intact and I was able to locate the photos which artist Michael August has shaped in to a creation that conveys the look of my tv show and tells you many things about this music before you even open the box. Hammond B3 freaks will not be disappointed. Joe Berger preserved the master recordings well. 25 years have passed from the start of this project with the first recordings. I am happy to say that now today my Rent is NOT Late! And the music of LATE RENT is available for the Ring Tones on your Phones. We appreciate your feedback by phone, email or good old fashioned snail-mail. Jon & Late Rent Team

About JON HAMMOND:

In 1983 Jon formed Backbeat Productions. Assisted by Lori
Friedman. With completely format original music and visuals – in a
radio adapted to television, Hammond´s innovative show quickly
became a Manhattan cable TV favorite. The show has been a
vehicle for new music and art for over 20 years. Many of today´s
new shows have been directly influenced by the Jon Hammond
Show – but the J.H. Show is known as the original show of it´s
type, and stands as the “Flagship” of public television.

About LORI

Known as New York´s #1 Editor and Video artist.
Her work has evolved from the top advertising agencies, to form a
collaboration known as: Backbeat Productions. Under the direction
of Jon Hammond, her work has been seen by millions of people
every week on The Jon Hammond Show. Called by Billboard
Magazine: The alternative to MTV. Lori´s visuals are inspired in the
studio – by the music. Hundrets of hours were spent synchronizing
the music and the visuals, to create a hybrid. A synergy of visual
and musical improvisation. A modern “Fantasia”…the television of the future… with overtones of the vintage 60´s – 70´s psychedelic movement.

*Audiophile Quality Remasterings of Jon Hammond’s Greatest Hits
Letter To The Listener From JON HAMMOND
Dear Listener: In my life I have been extremely fortunate to have been able to pursue my dream of being a musician, composer, broadcaster/journalist and impressario around the world. The music you will hear on this disc is exactly as I assembled the pieces carefully from over a 14 year period of my best recordings up to the year of 1995. In one late-night/early-morning session with my co-producer/engineer Joe Berger, we put together all the tracks which became my first official release titled Late Rent, the theme song of my tv show The Jon Hammond Show. Since the completion of that project many things have happened or as we say, water under the bridge. Now I am happy to be able to bring forth the record 10 years later in the best quality audio with complete quality control so that for the first time I can present some of my most faithful
compositions to my listeners as I always wanted to. The music is timeless and as Ray Charles once said, “When you’re dead you’re done”, but Jon Hammond says, “The music lives on and it will keep traveling long after I’m gone.” A message sent to all with no guarantee it has been received. I am the eternal optimist, having literally gone to live in other countries with nothing but my music and my instrument. Often I have played with musicians who can not speak English, but the language of music is international & universal. The rhythm of life exists on these tracks and like a musical photograph it has captured the spirit of my travels and life experiences. Late Rent is not just a title, it is a true story of my life struggles to get the rent paid and by many miracles I managed to get it paid every time, often down to a few moments of impending doom (better late than never!)…the music always came first for me and I am proud to present it to you now again better than ever. May this be the soundtrack to your life & travels and help groove you safely to your destinations sure as the sun rises in the morning.
Melody is King, and ™ The FINGERS…are the SINGERS!”
Crank it up kick back and enjoy, this is the music that has taken me around the world.
Sincerely,
Jon Hammond

Recreating LATE RENT CD Product

Some notes about the LATE RENT product you are holding in your hand:
They say history repeats itself.

The Day I Met Steve Jobs Personally In San Francisco by Jon Hammond

Jon Hammond San Francisco CA — Let me preface this post by saying I am deeply saddened by the too-young death of Steve Jobs, but I am

very thankful to have met him personally and I am one of the beneficiaries of his incredible body of work. Thanks Steve!

As follows: On January 11th 2005 I attended The MacWorld Expo Keynote given by Steve Jobs at Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco. Just prior to MacWorld my

first album re-release digitally remastered “Late Rent” went on to the iTunes Store so I was very excited about the whole concept of being able to offer my music through

the iTunes platform and I brought along one of the CD’s in my pocket.

The Keynote was really great, although I wasn’t really sure that Steve was there live because he was projected up on to the big screen throughout the presentation.

I thought it might be possible that it was a prepared film, but he occasionally made references to the day’s weather (rain predicted) and some other things that made it

current. Near the end of the presentation he brought out a surprise guest, President of Sony Kunitake Ando and they pledged a commitment to work together

on HD video. John Mayer came out and played at the end, the presentation was over and so I went in to the exhibits directly afterwards.

I was speaking with one of the Apple black shirt guys when all of a sudden I saw Steve. He saw me and I know he doesn’t like to be approached but he must have thought

he either knew me or recognized me and he came right over to meet me. I saw him coming so I reached in my pocket and pulled out my CD Late Rent fresh copy still in

the shrink wrap. I introduced myself and thanked Steve for the wonderful opportunity for all the composers and musicians to get our music out through iTunes (I am a member

of ASCAP) and I told him I would like to give him my Late Rent album if he would take it. He said “Sure!”

He then (this showed me how intense he is, I will never forget) I handed it to him and right away he looked at the cover art work and then looked straight at me to verify it

was indeed me on the cover. He then said “Thanks!” and I told him it was great to meet him…Steve walked away holding the CD in both hands still studying the artwork

intensely as approx. 50 people were following him like the Pied Piper, shouting out Steve Steve…over here!. Steve was absorbed in the art work, and there is plenty to look

at and copy to read, Michael August aka ILLUSTRATORP who designs my album covers so fantastically made sure of that!

Thanks for everything Steve Jobs,

After I met Steve Jobs it seemed that everything I did with Apple had been blessed by him, and maybe it has / had been!

Thanks for everything Steve Jobs,

sincerely,

re-issue of Jon’s 1995 European release “Late Rent.” Never before available in the U.S., it contains a collection of recordings featuring Bernard Purdie and Steve Ferrone on drums, as well as Todd Anderson and Alex Foster on sax, Barry Finnerty and Graham Hawthorne, Ray Grappone, Jim Preston and Chuggy Carter. The record is a swinging and funky compilation of original tracks written by Jon Hammond, as well as some anecdotal asides and a guest apperance by Jazzbeaux Collins. Lots of great solos and organ sounds, as well as melodies and groove. Includes “Late Rent,” “Pocket Funk,” “Lydia’s Tune,” “White Onions,” “Head Phone” and “Hip Hop Chitlins.”
