Büchner studierte an der Musikhochschule Hamburg bei Herb Geller und arbeitete dann mit dem Posaunisten Ed Kröger. Seit 1994 war er Mitglied der NDR Bigband. Zwischen 1996 und 1998 trat er in Hamburg regelmäßig mit Lucas Lindholm, Heinz Lichius und Buggy Braune und Gästen wie Wolfgang Schlüter und Gene Jackson auf. Außerdem arbeitete er mit Jörg Achim Kellers Small Bigband und mit Jürgen Attigs Low X, mit der Band von Nils Gessinger.

Von 2000 bis 2004 war Büchner Mitglied der Band von Alex Riel, mit der er das Album live at Jive (mit Carsten Dahl und Jesper Lundgaard) einspielte, Tourneen durch Dänemark, Norwegen und Vietnam unternahm und im Rolf-Liebermann-Studio des NDR auftrat. Seit 2001 war er Mitglied in der Band von Joe Gallardo, mit der er bei verschiedenen Festivals auftrat und das Album A Latin Shade of Blue aufnahm. Seit 2011 gehörte er zu Addi Münsters Old Merrytale Jazzband

Mit dem eigenen Quartett (mit Sandra Hempel, Heinz Lichius und Pepe Berns) trat Büchner 2005 bei den 2. Hamburger Jazztagen in der Kampnagel-Fabrik auf. Im selben Jahr entstand mit dem Trio Konnex (mit Björn Lücker und Philipp Steen) das gleichnamige Album, das im Folgejahr erschien. 2006 erschien Büchners Album Ring (mit Sandra Hempel, Danny Gottlieb, Vladislav Sendecki, Paul Imm und Jürgen Attig).

Mit der NDR Bigband trat Büchner bei Festivals in London, Chicago, Paris, New York und Peking auf und nahm an Tourneen durch Südamerika, Spanien, Portugal und Südafrika teil. Während einer Japan-Tournee der NDR-Bigband starb er in Tokio im Alter von 47 Jahren an einem Herzinfarkt. Er hinterlässt seine Frau und einen Sohn.[1]

„Die Nachricht vom Tod Lutz Büchners macht mich sehr betroffen. Ich habe ihn als einen liebenswürdigen Menschen erlebt, der leidenschaftlich mit und für Musik lebte. Lutz Büchner hatte den Jazz im Blut. Er liebte den spielerischen Umgang mit der Musik, die Improvisation. Der Tod dieses beeindruckenden Saxofonisten ist für die NDR Bigband, für den NDR, ein großer Verlust.“

Die offizielle Trauerfeier fand am 5. April 2016 in Hamburg statt, zu der auch Büchners musikalischer Begleiter Al Jarreau aus den USA angereist war. Während des Trauerzuges wurden Lieder im Stil einer Jazz-Beerdigung aus Jarreaus Heimatstadt New Orleans gespielt.

Folks, I am really in shock from hearing news of the unexpected and very sad death of my good friend Lutz Büchner! I really didn’t want to say it on the internet after receiving the horrible news in communications with our mutual good friend and fellow musician / bandmate Heinz Lichius. This is so hard to get my head around and accept it but I know it’s true that Lutz suffered a fatal heart attack while on tour in Tokyo Japan with his beloved NDR-bigband with Peter Erskine on the band – I can see Lutz’ smile and hear his voice and music in my mind like it was yesterday – and we spoke and played together so many times. So now I see the news releases are already out on the news FEEDS from the NDR, Hamburger Abendblatt etc. and a few too-early mentions on the Facebook, so I know it’s time to write a few words for those of you who might not know of Lutz Büchner, as follows: As Joe Gallardo the great trombonist and long-time colleague of Lutz’ said in email to me last night: “As you well know, Lutz was first of all a great human being and secondly, he was a masterful player. Lutz was my brother. We will all miss him.” – The very first time I met Lutz was in 1995 on a rainy night in Hamburg Eimsbüttel at the Thursday night weekly jazz session in Jazzclub Birdland – I had heard him the week before and pushed my Hammond organ on the wheels through the rain to the club and got there real early, Hr. Reichert the owner opened up the club and I was telling Mr. Reichert I came the week before but didn’t get to play so “early bird gets the worm…and maybe I’ll get to play with Lutz Büchner!” – well we did it and by good luck my friend Joris Dudli the great drummer was there – it was magic from the first hit. That’s where it started, I was living in Hamburg to play music and write tunes – like so many musicians following in the footsteps of The Beatles, by invitation of my sponsor Knut Benzner journalist moderator on the NDR. From then on together with main man Heinz Lichius drums who I had met just before when Heinz came over to meet me one afternoon – Heinz had recommended to check out Lutz, one of the finest rising musicians on the Hamburg scene. We had a lot of great times together on the bandstand and off from that time on – we played in Hamburg and his hometown of Bremen – turned out to be that Lutz was a real life jazz angel who saved my life at least twice, one time involving bringing me to the hospital / krankenhaus and translating to me what they were about to do to me – we escaped out the side door and the doctor came to our gig that night! I met Lutz’ Mom and Dad beautiful people when they came to hear us play in Bremen at Studio club April 7, 1998 – and most recently our last gigs together with my favorite musicians Michael Leuschner, (Heinz Lichius of course) “Fiete” Ernst-Friedrich Fiete Felsch NDR horn section brothers along with Joe Berger guitar, probably best gig of my life – Lutz was so happy to have found his love with his wife Bettina and he was always crazy about his son Asmus and his step daughters by Bettina, the happiest I have ever seen him, he glowed in the dark he had that much joy! — Back in 2005 I had an idea, I said to my long-time girlfriend Jennifer: Lutz is one of the greatest saxophonists I ever heard, I want to feature him on a CD release, he could be making a great record every day! I couldn’t believe that he didn’t have any feature albums out at that point – so I discussed it with Knut Benzner and we all co-produced a recording session for this purpose in the famous Studio 1 at NDR, the NDR SESSIONS Projekt was born, with the addition of “Joe G” / Joe Gallardo on trombone and Heinz Lichius and myself, Rudolf Grosser at the controls big SSL console, we started playing in the morning and I played through the magic bass amp belonging to Lucas Lindholm – the boys took one long coffee break and other than that we recorded tunes all day long – I am so grateful that I’ll always have this recording date together with Lutz, of course later on Lutz came out with more records – but this one for me is my special keepsake that went down with the blessings of NDR with the help of Knut Benzner and Axel Dürr. So many stories I can tell you, but most importantly everybody loved Lutz, I know there are a lot of tears flowing now around Hamburg and Bremen, my heart goes out to Lutz’ Family, Friends and Musicians music brothers and sisters! The 2nd to the last time we played together, I hadn’t seen Lutz for a while and he told me about a real miracle of survival when he was driving on the autobahn with Bettina and the kinder all his happy Family in the car, I think there was ice on the road – a car slammed in to the back of his car demolishing the car, but Lutz’ horns were in the trunk – they all got crushed but it saved his Family! They were all shaken up but OK – the lucky star was shining over them, and even though Lutz is not with us physically anymore, his lucky star will always be shining – he was competely dedicated to the NDR-bigband family of musicians and his own Family – always a huge inspiration to me as a person and master musician, rest in peace my very special good friend Lutz Büchner – my deepest and most sincere condolences go out to Lutz’ Mom and Dad and Bettina and his son Asmus and step children by Bettina – all the folks who know and love Lutz, sincerely, Jon Hammond

Vor allem aber brachte er auch seine Persönlichkeit in die Band ein: seinen Humor, sein ausgeglichenes Temperament und sein großes Interesse an allen Dingen des Lebens, das weit über die Musik hinaus reichte. Lutz Büchner wurde am 5. August 1968 in Bremen geboren. Er interessierte sich schon früh für Musik, bekam klassischen Klarinettenunterricht und entdeckte als Teenager nach einem Konzertbesuch den Jazz. Als er den Trompeter Miles Davis hörte, faszinierte ihn die Möglichkeit, sich auch jenseits der geschrieben Noten auf eine ganz persönliche Weise ausdrücken zu können. Dieser improvisierten, sich immer neu erfindenden Musik wollte er sich widmen.

Lutz Büchner kam nach Hamburg und studierte Saxofon bei Herb Geller, dem damals bekanntesten Solisten der NDR Bigband. Schon bald spielte er dort im Saxofonsatz – zunächst als Gast, seit 1994 als festes Mitglied. In den Mittelpunkt zog es ihn, den eher besonnen Menschen, dabei nicht so sehr. Aber wenn das Scheinwerferlicht auf ihn zeigte und er zum Solo ansetzte, dann entwickelte sein Spiel eine ganz besondere Wirkung: Mit geschlossenen Augen stand er da, die Töne flossen ebenso überraschend wie logisch aus seinem Instrument, sein ganzer Körper schien sich dabei in Musik zu verwandeln.

In seinem Spiel steckte besondere Tiefe
Viele Gäste der NDR Bigband haben ihn und sein Spiel so erlebt und geschätzt: Jazzgrößen wie Al Jarreau, Bobby McFerrin, João Bosco, Omar Sosa oder Abdullah Ibrahim genossen es, wenn Lutz Büchner neben ihnen spielte. Der Amerikaner Dale Wilson widmete ihm und seinem Saxofon-Kollegen Fiete Felsch eine ganze Big-Band-Suite, und die Komponistin Maria Schneider wollte ihn nach einem Besuch bei der NDR Bigband am liebsten gleich nach New York mitnehmen. Unvergessen ist sein solistischer Höhenflug in der Duke-Ellington-Hommage “Diminuendo, crescendo and crescendissimo in blue”, in der er minutenlang ein loderndes Feuer immer neu entfachte, bis die Zuschauer bei einem Auftritt der NDR Bigband in New York am Schluss buchstäblich aus den Sitzen gerissen wurden. Seine andere, lyrische Seite war besonders stark auf der Klarinette zu hören, auf der er zu den außergewöhnlichsten Stimmen des modernen Jazz zählte, vielleicht sogar weltweit. Intim und zart, wie gehaucht schwebten die Töne in die Luft, jeder von ihnen hatte Bedeutung.

Nicht nur in der NDR Bigband, auch in eigenen Formationen waren sein ausgeprägtes Spiel und seine ausgefeilten Kompositionen zu hören. Mit seinem Quartett (mit Sandra Hempel, Heinz Lichius und Pepe Berns) trat Lutz Büchner 2005 bei den 2. Hamburger Jazztagen in der Kampnagel-Fabrik auf. Roy Linwood Clark (born April 15, 1933) is an American country music musician and performer. He is best known for hosting Hee Haw, a nationally televised country variety show, from 1969 to 1992. Roy Clark has been an important and influential figure in country music, both as a performer and helping to popularize the genre.
During the 1970s, Clark frequently guest-hosted for Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show and enjoyed a 30-million viewership for Hee Haw. Clark is highly regarded and renowned as a guitarist and banjo player, and is also skilled on classical guitar and several other instruments. Although he has had hit songs as a pop vocalist (e.g., “Yesterday, When I Was Young” and “Thank God and Greyhound”), his instrumental skill has had an enormous effect on generations of bluegrass and country musicians. He has been a member of the Grand Ole Opry, since 1987[1][2] and The Country Music Hall of Fame. BIOGRAPHY: Born in Meherrin, Virginia, Clark lived as a teenager in southeast Washington, D.C., where his father worked at the Washington Navy Yard. At 14, Clark began playing banjo, guitar, and mandolin, and by age 15 he had already won two National Banjo Championships[3] and world banjo/guitar flatpick championships. He was simultaneously pursuing a sporting career, first as a baseball player and then as a boxer, before dedicating himself solely to music. At 17, he had his first appearance on the Grand Ole Opry.
At the age of 23, Clark obtained his pilot’s license and then bought a 1953 Piper Tri-Pacer (N1132C), which he flew for many years. This plane was raffled off on December 17, 2012, to benefit the charity Wings of Hope.[4] He has owned other planes, including a Mitsubishi MU-2, Stearman PT-17[5] and Mitsubishi MU-300 Diamond 1A bizjet.[6]
By 1955, he was a regular on Jimmy Dean’s Washington, D.C., television program. Dean, who valued punctuality among musicians in his band, the Texas Wildcats, fired Clark for habitual tardiness, telling him, “You’re the most talented person I’ve ever fired.” Clark married Barbara Joyce Rupard on August 31, 1957.[7] In 1960, Clark went out to Las Vegas, where he worked as a guitarist in a band led by former West Coast Western Swing bandleader-comedian Hank Penny. During the very early 1960s, he was also prominent in the backing band for Wanda Jackson—known as the Party Timers—during the latter part of her rockabilly period.[8]
When Dean was tapped to host The Tonight Show in the early 1960s, he asked Clark to appear, introducing him to a national audience for the first time. Subsequently, Clark appeared on The Beverly Hillbillies as a recurring character (actually two: he played businessman Roy Halsey and Roy’s mother, Myrtle). Once, on an episode of the Sunday evening Jackie Gleason Show dedicated to country music, Clark played a blistering rendition of “Down Home”. Later, he appeared on an episode of The Odd Couple wherein he played “Malagueña”.[9]
In 1963, Clark signed to Capitol Records and had three top ten hits. He switched to Dot Records and again scored hits. He later recorded for ABC Records, which had acquired Dot, and MCA Records, which absorbed the ABC label.

In the mid ’60s, he co-hosted, along with Buck Owens, a weekday daytime country variety series for NBC entitled “Swingin’ Country”, which was cancelled after two seasons. In 1969, Clark and Buck Owens were the hosts of Hee Haw. The show was dropped by CBS Television in 1971 but continued to run in syndication for twenty-one more years. During its tenure, Clark was a member of the Million Dollar Band and participated in a host of comedy sketches. In 1983, Clark opened the Roy Clark Celebrity Theatre in Branson, Missouri, becoming the first country music star to have his own venue there, thus beginning a trend which led to Branson becoming a center of live music performance, as it is today. Many of the celebrities who play in Branson first performed at the Roy Clark Celebrity Theatre.
Clark frequently played in Branson during the 1980s and 1990s. He has since sold the venue (now owned by the Hughes Brothers and renamed the Hughes American Family Theatre) and gone back to a fairly light touring schedule, which usually includes a performance with Ramona Jones and the Jones Family Band at their annual tribute to Clark’s old Hee Haw co-star Grandpa Jones in Mountain View, Arkansas.[citation needed]
In addition to his musical skill, Clark has often displayed his talents as a comedian and actor. During his years on Hee Haw, Clark entertained with numerous comedy sketches, including a recurring feature where he played the clerk of the “Empty Arms Hotel”. Clark released several albums of his comedic performances, to varying critical acclaim and commercial success. Clark is one of the few surviving regular male cast members from the show.[citation needed]
Clark has endorsed Mosrite, Gretsch, and many other brands of guitars during his career. He currently endorses Heritage Guitars, which makes a Roy Clark model. On August 22, 1987, Clark was made a member of the Grand Ole Opry. He plays an annual benefit concert at Longwood University in Farmville, Virginia, the proceeds of which go to fund scholarships for aspiring musicians.[citation needed]
For many years Clark has made his home in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Roy Clark Elementary School in Tulsa’s Union School District was named in his honor in 1978. Fellow Oklahoma resident Mickey Mantle arranged for Clark to sing “Yesterday When I Was Young” at his funeral (which Clark did in 1995).[10]
On May 17, 2009, Clark was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame along with Barbara Mandrell and Charlie McCoy. On September 23, 2010, Clark sang “God Bless America” during the seventh-inning stretch at Dodger Stadium in a game featuring the Los Angeles Dodgers versus the San Diego Padres. On April 12, 2011, Clark was honored by the Oklahoma House of Representatives. He will be honored by the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame as Oklahoma’s Music Ambassador for Children and will be presented with a commendation from Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin.

Covering Jimmy Smith’s Back at The Chicken Shack and The Sermon – Nachdem sich in den vergangenen Jahren das LaJazzO MV mit den in der Big Band vorkommenden Instrumenten musikalisch auseinandersetzte, wird in 2015 die Jazzorgel musikalisch thematisiert werden. Unter dem Titel “Organ meets Big Band” wird dieses sehr traditionsreiche Instrument der Jazzgeschichte in den Mittelpunkt der Konzertreihe im folgenden Jahr gestellt. Als Jazzinstrument wurde es von Fats Waller in den 30er Jahren eingeführt und hatte seine Hochzeit in den 50er Jahren durch seine Vertreter wie Jimmy Smith. Der international renommierte New Yorker Jazzorganist Jon Hammond wird zusammen mit dem LaJazzO MV unter der Leitung von Michael Leuschner den besonderen Charme dieses Instrumentes wieder zum Leben erwecken. Im Programm sind unter anderem Titel von Jimmy Smith, arrangiert von Steve Gray – eine Leihgabe aus dem Archiv der NDR-Bigband.

Jon Hammond studierte in den siebziger Jahren am Berklee College of Music und am City College San Francisco. Konzertreisen führten ihn quer durch die Vereinigten Staaten und Kanada. The Tubes is a San Francisco-based rock band whose 1975 debut album included the hit single “White Punks on Dope”. The Tubes started as a group of high school friends from Phoenix and Scottsdale, Arizona. Two Phoenix bands, the Beans and The Red, White and Blues Band, both relocated to San Francisco in 1969 and eventually merged. The new band’s core membership remained largely intact for more than a decade: Fee Waybill (real name John Waldo Waybill) (vocals), Bill “Sputnik” Spooner (guitar, vocals), Roger Steen (guitar), Prairie Prince (real name Charles L. Prince) (drums), Michael Cotten (synthesizer), Vince Welnick (piano), and Rick Anderson (bass). Singer Re Styles (born Shirley Marie MacLeod) (vocals) and ex-Santana percussionist Mingo Lewis were also fixtures for much of the band’s early history.[1]

Show business excess was a common theme of the band’s early work, with Waybill sometimes assuming the onstage persona of “Quay Lewd” (a pun on Quaalude), a drunk, drugged out, barely coherent lead singer, wearing flashing glasses and stilt-like tall platform shoes.

Debut album[edit]
The Tubes’ first self-titled album, The Tubes (1975), was produced by Al Kooper. The track “White Punks on Dope” was an “absurd anthem of wretched excess” and a tribute to their rich, white teenage fan base in San Francisco.[citation needed] Since then the song has been covered by Mötley Crüe, and the German rock musician Nina Hagen took the tune and set new lyrics to it (not a translation of the original lyrics), titled her work TV-Glotzer (“Couch Potato”), and used this song as the opening track of her own debut album Nina Hagen Band, released 1978 on CBS/Germany Records. The album track “What Do You Want from Life?”, which became another of the Tubes’ signature songs, satirizes consumerism and celebrity culture and climaxes in a “hard-sell” monologue by Waybill, which name-checks celebrities such as Bob Dylan, Paul Williams and Randolph Mantooth, as well as well-known products of the period, including the Dynagym exercise machine and a host of American vehicles such as the Winnebago and the Mercury Montclair.

Second album[edit]
The Tubes’ second album, Young and Rich (1976) on A&M Records, was produced by Ken Scott. It featured “Don’t Touch Me There”, a suggestive duet between Waybill and Re Styles, which was arranged in classic “Wall of Sound” style by Jack Nitzsche. The song was co-written by Ron Nagle and Tubes dancer/vocalist Jane Dornacker, who died in a helicopter crash in 1986.

Third album, a live album, fourth album[edit]
The Tubes’ third album gave way to thematic experimentation with Now (1977) and after their live record What Do You Want from Live (1978), recorded during their record breaking run at the Hammersmith Odeon, London, England, the fourth album for A&M, Remote Control (1979) was a concept album produced by Todd Rundgren about a television-addicted idiot-savant. The cover of Remote Control (1979) shows a baby watching American panel game show Hollywood Squares in a specially made “Vidi-Trainer”.

Music videos[edit]
John Tobler opined that with their media savvy and theatrical skills, The Tubes were born to create rock video, but arrived several years too early.[2] However, the band did produce at least one collection of music videos, which were issued on the 1982 Pioneer Artists laserdisc “The Tubes Video” (this videodisc contained versions of twelve of the band’s hits, including “White Punks on Dope”, “Mondo Bondage”, “Talk to Ya Later”, and several others from yet-to-be-completed “The Completion Backwards Principle” album, in slickly produced music videos based on the group’s stage shows).

Live shows[edit]
The Tubes put their creativity and art skills mainly into their live performances, in which songs could be full-fledged production numbers, from a beach movie parody for “Sushi Girl”, to leather clad S&M hijinks in “Mondo Bondage”, to the game show antics of “What Do You Want from Life?” At their peak, their live act featured dozens of other performers, including tap dancers and acrobats. The Tubes’ stage productions were choreographed by Kenny Ortega and featured cast members Jane Dornacker, LeRoy Jones, Michael Holman, Michael Springer, Cindi Osborn, Heline Gouax, and Mary Niland from 1975-1977. From 1978-1979, the cast included Sharon Collins, Caty Bevan, and Loryanna Catalano. The Completion Backward tour featured Shelly Pang, Cheryl Hangland, Joey Richards, and Cynthia Rhodes. From 1983-1985, Michelle Gray (who later married Todd Rundgren) and Cheryl Hangland were principal dancers. Several crew members — including Tour Manager Steve “Chopper” Borges, Lee Collins, and Gail Lowe — made frequent appearances on stage in various roles as well.[citation needed]

The Tubes’ live shows in the late 1970s and early 1980s were rife with allusions to mainstream film [Dr. Strangelove (1964), Rollerball (1975), Saturday Night Fever (1977), Grease (1978)] then-forgotten B-movies [Wild Women of Wongo (1958), Attack of the 50 Foot Woman (1958)], music (Tom Jones, punk rock, a medley of Nelson Riddle television themes), contemporary pop culture (Patty Hearst, the Viking program), television (Let’s Make a Deal, Fernwood 2Nite, the anime Raideen), and literature (Nelson Algren’s A Walk on the Wild Side), presaging the subcultural reverence and over-the-top theatricality of later groups like The World/Inferno Friendship Society.[citation needed]

These shows were expensive to produce, however, and while they earned the band a reputation for being one of the most entertaining live acts of the time, by the early 1980s, they found themselves short of money.

Departure from A&M Records and tenure with Capitol Records[edit]
Their fifth studio album, the self-produced Suffer for Sound, was meant to complete the group’s contract with A&M. As its style marked a radical new direction for the band, A&M opted for a more conservative outtakes / B-sides / oddities selection titled T.R.A.S.H. (Tubes Rarities and Smash Hits) (1981).[3] The band was signed to Capitol Records by Bruce Garfield and Bobby Colomby, scaling back the live shows to cut costs and redesigning itself as a leaner ensemble with a view to release more accessible hits.

Fifth and sixth albums[edit]
Suffer For Sound was not released, so their fifth album release was The Completion Backward Principle (1981), another concept album, featuring the classic rock staple “Talk to Ya Later”. The album presented itself as a motivational business document, complete with shocking pictures of the band members cleaned up and wearing suits.[citation needed] The band also had their first Top 40 hit in the United States in 1981, “Don’t Want to Wait Anymore” (recorded almost entirely by Spooner, without Waybill’s participation). The sixth studio album, Outside Inside (1983), followed a few years later and yielded a few hits, including the number 10 (USA) hit “She’s a Beauty”.

Seventh album and departure from Capitol Records[edit]
In 1985, the band teamed up with Todd Rundgren again for their seventh album, Love Bomb. With Bruce Garfield and Bobby Colomby dropped by Capitol in the company-wide layoffs that took place pre-reorganization, like many of their label mates The Tubes also were released, however, this occurred just as they were going on tour in support of the album. The band found it necessary to self-finance the tour as a matter of respect to honor their commitment to their fans. Between this tour’s self-financing and the band’s continued self-financing of their San Francisco recording studio built in 1980, the tour left the band in a half million dollars in debt, obliging them to play lesser expensive and smaller venues for a year to pay off their financial commitments.[3]

Waybill departs[edit]
Fee Waybill had already released an unsuccessful solo album (Read My Lips, Capitol Records) in 1984, but during this time, he had also happily enjoyed a fruitful writing partnership with fellow Capitol Records label mate Richard Marx, their most popular and well known collaboration being “Edge of a Broken Heart”, recorded by the female band Vixen. Waybill left the band in 1986 [“Fee broke up”, one band member said],[citation needed] leaving the band without a lead singer.

Personnel changes[edit]
Later in the year the remaining members of the band took on a longtime friend from Phoenix, Arizona, David Killingsworth, as lead vocalist. Killingsworth was the singer in the Red and White Blues Band with Prairie and Roger. Michael Cotten relocated to New York to pursue a career based on his artwork, stage design and production, and is considered one of the country’s top production designers. In the fall of 1988, Bill Spooner traveled his final tour with the band and left in early 1989. Vince Welnick departed as well to take to the road with Todd Rundgren in 1989 and then joined the Grateful Dead in 1990. Gary Cambra joined on keyboards and guitar in 1989. He and Roger Steen took over most the lead vocal duties after Killingsworth left in early 1990.

Waybill returns[edit]
In 1993, Fee Waybill rejoined the band. This lineup toured Europe and released two albums, a compilation and the 1996 album Genius of America. David Medd joined in 1996 to play keyboards alongside Cambra. In 2001, the band released a live CD, The Tubes World Tour 2001, and continued to tour.

Reunions[edit]
On April 22, 2005, a reunion show took place at the Rio Theater in Santa Cruz, CA, with Waybill, Steen, Anderson, Spooner, Welnick and Cotten. 2005 also saw the release of their live album Wild in London.

In July 2015, the Tubes started a European and U.S. tour, including dates in Germany, Sweden, the UK and the United States and featured 5 band members (Fee Waybill, Roger Steen, Prairie Prince, Rick Anderson & David Medd).

The Tubes Project and other milestones[edit]
Michael Cotten started “The Tubes Project” in 2005, to save and digitize the band’s reel to reel and video tape archive. The collection had been kept in the closet of Tubes fan club president Marylin Wood’s son after being discarded in the late 1980s. Included in the vault are full color shows taped for TV at Bimbos in San Francisco, 1975 and VARA TV from the 1977 European tour. Over 70 interviews were conducted with band members, crew, managers, cast and colleagues such as Re Styles, Todd Rundgren, Al Kooper, Devo and David Foster. Hundreds of photos were scanned and compiled from band members and fan collections for use in the hour and half documentary.

After leaving the band, Jane Dornacker formed the band Leila and the Snakes and later worked as a traffic reporter. She was killed in a helicopter crash in 1986, whilst giving a live report.

In April 2005, the band reunited for a concert at the Rio Theatre in Santa Cruz, California. It would be the last performance of The Tubes to include Vince Welnick, and the last time the full line up appeared in public.

Pianist Vince Welnick, who suffered from depression, committed suicide on June 2, 2006.

Gary Cambra left the band in 2006 leaving David Medd as their sole keyboardist.

On September 23, 2007, the remaining members of the Tubes reunited in Phoenix for their induction into the Arizona Music & Entertainment Hall of Fame.

On November 10, 2009, “Mondo Birthmark” a CD of previously unreleased rarities was released through the label Fuel 2000. The package was designed by Michael Cotten and Prairie Prince with rare photos and interviews of the group. The demos also feature former member Bob Macintosh on drums.
1972: Tubes appear in Mitchell brothers pornographic film Resurrection of Eve as Jesus Bongo and the Millionaires.
1973: Opened for the New York Dolls at the Matrix, Iggy Pop at Bimbos, and Led Zeppelin at Kezar Stadium in San Francisco.
1974: Tubes shoot “video demo” at California Hall, which lands a record deal at A&M Records, Cotten/Prince paint “Flying Record” mural on A&M sound stage.
1975: Tubes play for two weeks of shows at David Allen’s nightclub The Boarding House in San Francisco, several sell-out dates at The Roxy in Los Angeles and The Bottom Line in New York. On December 31, they sell out Bill Graham’s Winterland Ballroom.[4]
1976: Held residency at Bimbos in San Francisco for one month, Prairie Prince dubbed “The One, The Only” by columnist Herb Caen. Tubes hold “Talent Hunt” at the Boarding House hosted by Martin Mull; Robin Williams is contestant but loses.
1977: Held residency at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco for one month, the Whisky a Go Go nightclub in Los Angeles for two shows a night for one month, and Hammersmith Odeon in London for a week.
1978: Headlined the Knebworth Festival with Frank Zappa and Peter Gabriel. On April 3, The Tubes performed live with Dolly Parton on Cher… Special, in the “Musical Battle to Save Cher’s Soul Medley”. As the title would imply, the performance was a duel between the forces of good and evil to determine where Cher would spend her eternal destiny. Dolly Parton was dressed in white and, with a team of brightly clad singers, portrayed an angelic host while The Tubes, dressed in black leather and performing “Mondo Bondage”, battled to send Cher’s soul into eternal damnation. The band also performed the song “Smoke (La Vie en Fumér)”, about a guy in a trenchcoat winning over a girl at a bar with his cigarette smoking technique, which employed giant, twelve-foot inflatable cigarettes. At the end of the number the dancers would bash singer Waybill with the giant cigarettes until he was crushed into the ground.[5]
1979: Tubes play Japan; Cotten/Welnick/Prince/Styles appear on Japanese soap opera. Tubes appear in Andy Warhol’s Interview magazine.
1980: Made an appearance in the film Xanadu singing the rock portion of the cross-genre song “Dancin'” opposite a big band.
1980: Sold out the Roxy Theatre for 12 shows
1981: Record Grammy nominated “The Tubes Video” at Shepperton Studios, one of the first long form video discs.
1981: Sang “Sushi Girl” and “Talk to Ya Later” on the television sketch comedy program SCTV, Episode #86 airing July 24.
1981: Appeared and sang, “Sushi Girl” and “Don’t Want to Wait Anymore” on Tomorrow with Tom Snyder.
1981: Compose the song “Road Map of My Tears” for the film Ladies and Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains, in which Waybill and Welnick appear, among other musicians, as the fictional rock group The Metal Corpses.
1982: Appeared in a commercial for Activision’s video game Megamania.
1983: Opened several dates for David Bowie on the Serious Moonlight tour and on this tour, among other highlights, they were the first artists to ever play the newly opened Tacoma Dome in Tacoma, Washington. At the end of the Bowie tour, they played a few shows featuring their classic no-holds-barred theatrics in Portland, Oregon, and other west-coast cities.

Musician: Jon Hammond is one of the premier B3 PLAYERS in the world. Jon has played professionally since age 12. Beginning as a solo accordionist, he later played Hammond B3 organ in a number of important San Francisco bands. His all original group HADES opened shows for Tower of Power, Quicksilver Messenger Service and Michael Bloomfield. Eddie Money and Barry Finnerty became musical associates. Moving East he attended Berklee College of Music and played venues as diverse as Boston’s “Combat Zone” in the striptease clubs during the ’70’s and the exclusive Wychmere Harbor Club in Cape Cod, where he was house organist with the late great trumpet player Lou Colombo and developed a lasting friendship with House Speaker Tip O’Neill. He also toured the Northeast and Canada with the successful show revue “Easy Living”, and continued his appearances at nightclubs in Boston and New York. Subsequently Hammond lived and traveled in Europe, where he has an enthusiastic following. TV/Video Producer: In 1981 Jon formed BackBeat Productions. Assisted by Lori Friedman (Video by LORI), the innovative TV show “The Jon Hammond Show” became a Manhattan Cable TV favorite. Jon’s “Live on the street” video style included news events, as well as live music/video clips of Dizzy Gillespie, Paul Butterfield, Jaco Pastorius, John Entwistle, Sammy Davis Jr., Percy Sledge and many others. The weekly show is now in it’s 32ns year and has influenced the broadcasts of David Letterman and others. Billboard Magazine hailed Jon’s show as “The Alternative to MTV”

たジョン・ハモンドさん、日本ツアーを終えて帰国前の敦賀明子さん。そして、これもまた関西からの帰路に立ち寄られた田中光栄さん。何の脈絡もなく集まった3人にアフターファイブコンサートをお願いしてしまったのはスズキ楽器貿易の北米担当者だった。

 ジョン・ハモンドさんはショービジネスの表舞台に出てくることは少ないが、フランクフルトメッセでは25年、ナムショーでもレギュラーのように演奏されているエンドーサーである。今回も鈴木会長に唯会いたいという一念で来日された律儀なお人柄です。

It “is great that but children play that I want to add a wind instrument to an instrumental ensemble”…Hammond square solves such a trouble. I can play the tone of the base musical instrument that a musical performance musical instrument and the sum musical instrument of the performance hard to please, transportation are great with a keyboard easily, and width of the ensemble opens.
In the tone that I repeat a draw bar tone, and is solid.
Can put the draw bar tone on a bus tone and an ensemble tone, and the thickness of the sound increases, and is solid; sound. When the harmonic overtone ingredient of the Hammond organ is piled up, each sound becomes rich.
It is equipped with a tone of the bus master. I can use it as a base musical instrument to be able to carry.
When a low tone was solid, was solid-looking, and the ensemble was finished; is played. Therefore I will use Hammond square as a base musical instrument. Neil’s Wiki Neil R. Portnow (born 1948, New York City) is the current president of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS). Portnow was formerly the vice-president of the West Coast division of Jive Records.
Portnow grew up in Great Neck, New York. He played bass guitar in a high school rock band, The Savages,[1] who released a 45rpm record “Cheating on me”/”Best thing you ever had”[2] on Red Fox Records that did not achieve serious commercial success, but was subsequently included in a compilation of garage bands.[3]
He graduated from The George Washington University in 1971.[4] He started out as a record producer and music supervisor. He worked with RCA Records as staff producer, as vice-president of A&R at Arista and EMI America . He was senior vice-president and then president at 20th Century Records.
He started working with Jive Records in 1989. He oversaw the expansion of their West Coast operation, making Jive a groundbreaking, successful label. Jive thrived under his leadership as Vice-President of the West Coast division and spearheaded the careers of some of the biggest acts of the late 1990s and early 2000s. He worked alongside Jive’s president Clive Calder who ran Jive’s parent company, the Zomba Label Group.
Portnow worked as music supervisor on three films: Permanent Record (1988), A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child (1989), and Wired (1989), in which he also appeared briefly as a bandleader.

Neil’s Wiki Neil R. Portnow (born 1948, New York City) is the current president of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS). Portnow was formerly the vice-president of the West Coast division of Jive Records.
Portnow grew up in Great Neck, New York. He played bass guitar in a high school rock band, The Savages,[1] who released a 45rpm record “Cheating on me”/”Best thing you ever had”[2] on Red Fox Records that did not achieve serious commercial success, but was subsequently included in a compilation of garage bands.[3]
He graduated from The George Washington University in 1971.[4] He started out as a record producer and music supervisor. He worked with RCA Records as staff producer, as vice-president of A&R at Arista and EMI America . He was senior vice-president and then president at 20th Century Records.
He started working with Jive Records in 1989. He oversaw the expansion of their West Coast operation, making Jive a groundbreaking, successful label. Jive thrived under his leadership as Vice-President of the West Coast division and spearheaded the careers of some of the biggest acts of the late 1990s and early 2000s. He worked alongside Jive’s president Clive Calder who ran Jive’s parent company, the Zomba Label Group.
Portnow worked as music supervisor on three films: Permanent Record (1988), A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child (1989), and Wired (1989), in which he also appeared briefly as a bandleader.

Those of you in the Saxophone Community can probably tell I don’t know how to properly hold a saxophone, but I love the way these P Mauriat HQ horns sound whenever I hear them played next to me on the bandstand by players like Tony Lakatos, Kevin Saxophone always music to my ears – here with main man Alex Mingmann Hsieh we’re going to be doing it at his stand at 2PM on Sunday Jan. 27th for those of you who’ll be down at the NAMM Show, c’mon down – Alex says “Go for the Sound!”

“A line of saxophones are named for Paul Mauriat, known as P. Mauriat Saxophones.”
Paul Mauriat (4 March 1925 – 3 November 2006) was a French orchestra leader, conductor of Le Grand Orchestre de Paul Mauriat, who specialized in the easy listening genre. He is best known in the United States for his million selling remake of André Popp’s “Love is Blue”, which was #1 for 5 weeks in 1968. Other recordings for which he is known include El Bimbo, “Toccata” and “Penelope.”
Mauriat was born and grew up in Marseille, France. His father was a postal inspector who loved to play classical piano and violin. Mauriat began playing music at the age of four and enrolled in the Conservatoire in Paris at the age of 10, but by the time he was 17, he had fallen in love with jazz and popular music. During World War II, Mauriat started his own dance band and toured concert halls throughout Europe. In the 1950s he became musical director to at least two well-known French singers, Charles Aznavour and Maurice Chevalier, touring with them respectively.
In 1957, Mauriat released his first EP Paul Mauriat, a four track RGM release. Between 1959–1964 Mauriat recorded several albums on the Bel-Air record label under the name Paul Mauriat et Son Orchestre, as well as using the various pseudonyms of Richard Audrey, Nico Papadopoulos, Eduardo Ruo and Willy Twist, to better reflect the international flavour of his recordings. During this period, Mauriat also released several recordings with Les Satellites, where he creatively arranged vocal backing harmony for such albums as Slow Rock and Twist, (1961), A Malypense (1962) and Les Satellites Chantent Noel (1964)…

October 9 1998 Jon Hammond brought legendary studio drummer Bernard Purdie ‘The Hit Maker’ back to San Francisco to play for the first time since the Live Aretha Franklin at Fillmore recordings in March of 1971. The concert went down in North Beach San Francisco at COCODRIE Club. Here they are playing a Jon Hammond Band original ‘Hip Hop Chitlins’ with an explosive and impromptu drum solo from Bernard that is pure Funk. *Note: Excerpt from article in April 2008 ALLEGRO Magazine of Local 802 Musicians Union in honor of Earth Day April 22 and Environmentalism “Beat On The Street”: I am about to go over to Germany for my annu- al music tour with my Hammond organ so I’d like to tell you my way of doing a “green tour” that I have perfected. In the past, a Hammond B3 organ weighed 425 pounds (without the Leslie speaker) so it was not possible for me to take one to Europe. In 1991, I got the first really portable model. It was one of the first 10 prototypes of the Ham- mond-Suzuki XB-2, with multi-voltage for any- where in the world. I flew over to Germany with it on Pakistan Airlines. I found that by using a Kart-A-Bag Super 600 heavy-duty luggage cart with “stair slides” (like what UPS and FedEx uses), I could hoist it up on to any train or bus. I traveled all over Europe this way, and was pic- tured doing it eventually in a magazine ad for Kart- A-Bag for quite a while. They had a contest going for a long time where they would give away one “Ham- mond Super 600 Kart-A-Bag” every month from a drawing. I jokingly refer to it as my “tour bus.” I see a lot of bands touring with big tour buses and they look real nice and comfy but they also burn a lot of fuel. With my technique I ride on the high speed trains in Germany, the local trains, up and down in the Metro of Paris and in Prague on the street cars. William J. Cunningham (born March 13, 1929) is a fashion photographer for The New York Times, known for his candid and street photography.

Cunningham dropped out of Harvard University in 1948 and moved to New York, where he initially worked in advertising. Not long after, he quit his job and struck out on his own, making hats under the name “William J.” After being drafted (causing his business to fold) and serving a tour in the U.S. Army, he returned to New York and got a job writing for the Chicago Tribune.
During his years as a writer, he contributed significantly to fashion journalism, introducing American audiences to Azzedine Alaïa and Jean-Paul Gaultier. While working at the Tribune and at Women’s Wear Daily, he began taking photographs of fashion on the streets of New York. As the result of a chance photograph of Greta Garbo, he published a group of his impromptu pictures in the Times in December 1978, which soon became a regular series.His editor, Arthur Gelb, has called these photographs “a turning point for the Times, because it was the first time the paper had run pictures of well-known people without getting their permission.”
Cunningham photographs people and the passing scene in the streets of Manhattan every day. Most of his pictures, he has said, are never published. Designer Oscar de la Renta has said, “More than anyone else in the city, he has the whole visual history of the last 40 or 50 years of New York. It’s the total scope of fashion in the life of New York.”Though he has made a career out of unexpected photographs of celebrities, socialites, and fashion personalities, many in those categories value his company. According to David Rockefeller, Brooke Astor asked he be invited to her 100th birthday party, the only member of the media so honored.[3]
In 2008 he was awarded the title Officier de l’ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture.
In 2010, filmmaker Richard Press and Philip Gefter of The Times produced Bill Cunningham New York a documentary about Cunningham, including his trademark bicycle and camera,.The film was released on March 16, 2011. It reveals various of Cunningham’s eccentricities: he was living in a tiny, apparently one-room, apartment in the Carnegie Hall building, filled with filing cabinets and boxes of his photographs. He does not have a wardrobe, a kitchen or even his own bathroom. Despite his interest in fashion, his clothes are few and purely utilitarian.

“Organist who infused Deep Purple with classical influences, helping make them one of the world’s biggest rock bands”
‘We’re as valid as anything by Beethoven,” declared Jon Lord of his band, Deep Purple, in an interview with the New Musical Express in 1973. Lord, who has died aged 71 after suffering from pancreatic cancer, was not merely adopting a rebellious stance. An accomplished classical composer as well as rock musician, he believed with some justification that his group’s music was as profound in structure and as significant in cultural impact as any work from the symphonic canon. At the time, Deep Purple were among the world’s biggest rock bands, having built an enormous fanbase on the strength of their classically influenced songs, which lent further weight to Lord’s statement.

Born in Leicester, Lord studied classical piano from the age of five. In his teens, the then-new rock’n’roll and R&B movements made a deep impression on him, in particular the music recorded by blues pianists and organists such as Jimmy McGriff and Jerry Lee Lewis. The contemporary combination of Hammond B3 and C3 organs with Leslie speakers appealed to him, and this became an instrumental setup that remained integral to Lord’s signature keyboard style for the rest of his career.

In 1959, he moved to London to pursue acting, which he studied at the Central School of Speech and Drama. He played the piano and Hammond organ in clubs to pay the bills, initially with a jazz band called the Bill Ashton Combo and then with Red Bludd’s Bluesicians, featuring the vocalist Art Wood. While recording occasional sessions (he contributed keyboards to the Kinks’ 1964 hit You Really Got Me), Lord pursued pop success in the Art Wood Combo, who later renamed themselves the Artwoods and appeared on TV. I Take What I Want was the group’s only charting single.

Lord discovered his trademark sound when he formed Santa Barbara Machine Head, which also featured Wood’s brother and future Rolling Stone, Ronnie Wood. The key to this group’s success was its powerful, organ- and guitar-driven formula, which pointed at the future musical recipe of Deep Purple, and also the meeting of Lord and the bassist Nick Simper. The duo were the backbone of Deep Purple, who formed when the businessman and manager Tony Edwards invested in the new group and auditioned the cream of London’s young talent – the guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, the singer Rod Evans and the drummer Ian Paice among them. This quintet formed Purple’s first lineup in 1968.

Deep Purple spent the following eight years on a path that took them around the world on several occasions (in later years, they had a private jet), playing the world’s largest stadiums and issuing a series of classic LPs – In Rock (1970), Fireball (1971), Machine Head (1972) and Burn (1974) among them. Personnel came and went, but Lord and Paice remained constant members until the group’s dissolution amid a haze of drug addiction and exhaustion in 1976.

Of the great British rock bands of the 70s, only Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and the Stones were able to operate on as grand a scale: unlike any of those groups, Deep Purple took regular time out to indulge in classical projects initiated and directed by Lord. The most notable of these was the live Concerto for Group and Orchestra, recorded at the Royal Albert Hall in 1969.

It was this equal passion for rock bombast and classical finesse that made Lord such an unusual musician. During Deep Purple’s glory days, he often infused the songs with classical influences, as in the song April from the group’s eponymous album in 1969. His organ playing, which often counterpointed Blackmore’s virtuoso lead guitar, was unique and often copied.

After the split, Lord formed a group with the rock singer Tony Ashton and Deep Purple’s ex-drummer Paice entitled Paice, Ashton & Lord. They released one album, Malice in Wonderland, in 1977. He then joined Whitesnake, the band formed by Deep Purple’s last lead singer, David Coverdale. This group, not to be confused with the 1980s reincarnation that played stadium rock and met with huge success, was an earthy, blues-rock band in which Lord’s organ playing was an essential element. His stint in Whitesnake ended when he rejoined a reformed lineup of Deep Purple in 1984 alongside Blackmore, Paice, the singer Ian Gillan and the bassist Roger Glover.

Many solo projects and collaborations came during and between Lord’s membership of these bands, including Before I Forget (1982), which featured classical piano music; a commission to compose the soundtrack of Central Television’s 1984 series The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady; and guest spots on albums by rock luminaries such as Lord’s Oxfordshire neighbour George Harrison and Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour.

Eight more years of recording and tours followed before Lord felt he had had enough of life on the road. In a letter to his bandmates in 2002, he requested that Deep Purple take a year off. When this request was declined, he amicably left the group. Solo projects followed, including a collaboration in 2004 with sometime Abba singer Anni-Frid Lyngstad, and the formation of a blues band, Hoochie Coochie Men, three years later. In 2010, Lord was made an honorary fellow of Stevenson College, Edinburgh, and the following year he was awarded an honorary doctorate of music by the University of Leicester.

The only 2 star hotel in Frankfurt, but it did the job – 3 of us in one little room, Joe Berger, Bruno Engl and myself Jon Hammond right by the Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof, and it had a little bar kneipe. The Deutsche Bundespost (German federal post office) was created in 1947 as a successor to the Reichspost (German imperial post office). Between 1947 and 1950 the enterprise was called Deutsche Post (German post office). Until 1989 the Deutsche Bundespost was a state-owned company.
The Bundespost was developed according to a three-stage principle common in public administration in the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG). The upper stage consisted of the federal ministry for the post office and telecommunication system. The middle stage consisted of regional directorates and national post office management in West Berlin, with certain central bureaucracies (post office technical central office, telecommunication engineering central office, postal administration social office, and post offices) on an equal footing. Finally, the lower stage consisted of the actual post offices, postal giro (akin to a checking account)and savings bank offices, and telecommunication offices.
The legal basis for the administrative activity of the Bundespost was the postal administration law (Postverwaltungsgesetz, abbreviated PostVwG). A central goal of public administrative policy after 1924 was financial self-sufficiency. Political goals, however, often superseded this goal. According to the PostVwG, the federal postal system was to be administered “according to the principles of the policy of the FRG, in particular trade, economic, financial and social policies” and “the interests of the German national economy.”
The Deutsche Bundespost was the largest employer in the Federal Republic. In 1985 it employed 543,200 people.
In the first post office reform (July 1, 1989), the Bundespost was divided into three divisions (also called public enterprises):
Deutsche Bundespost Postdienst – postal service
Deutsche Bundespost Telekom – communications service
Deutsche Bundespost Postbank – postal bank
The central authorities remained as described above. The divisions were later privatized in the second post office reform (January 1, 1995), resulting in the creation of the following:

Deutsche Telekom AG from the communications service
Deutsche Postbank AG from the postal bank
The federal ministry for post office and telecommunications (Bundesministerium für Post und Telekommunikation) retained oversight responsibility for postal services and telecommunications. After the dissolution of that ministry on 1 January 1998, those tasks were taken over by a new federal network regulatory agency (Bundesnetzagentur, formerly RegTP) under the federal ministry for economics and technology. Other functions (such as the issuance of postage stamps) were taken over by the federal ministry of finance. Some telecommunications functions (including BOS radio) were turned over to the federal ministry of the interior.

For seven years, Frank Owens was music director for NBC TV’s Showtime at the Apollo. He was also host of Portrait of the Arts. Mr. Owens performed in the Hartford CT Theatreworks production of Paul Robeson, playing the part of Lawrence Brown. Recently he accompanied Hal David in his tribute at the Friars Club and Freda Payne at the High Mount Jazz Festival, and is co-author and arranger of Shades of Harlem.

Mr. Owens has played and conducted abroad, including the conducting A Fourth of July Celebration of American Jazz, Pop and Broadway in Moscow. Frank Owens was resident pianist at Mortimer’s for over six years, and appeared several times a year at the Hotel Carlyle’s Bemelman’s Bar. He appeared at the Blue Note with Ruth Brown of Broadway’s Black and Blue, having arranged and conducted her album, Fine and Mellow.

Frank Owens was musical director/conductor/pianist for many performers including Johnny Mathis, Chubby Checker, John Denver, Melba Moore, Aretha Franklin, Connie Francis, and Lena Horne.

Frank was musical director for the first David Letterman Show in 1980. Other TV credits include the Jack Paar Show, Geraldo Rivera’s Goodnight America, and Eubie Blake’s, A Century of Music. The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (often referred to as “The Guggenheim”) is a well-known art museum located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan in New York City. It is the permanent home of a renowned and continuously expanding collection of Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, early Modern and contemporary art and also features special exhibitions throughout the year. The museum was established by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation in 1939 as the Museum of Non-Objective Painting, under the guidance of its first director, the artist Hilla von Rebay. It adopted its current name after the death of its founder, Solomon R. Guggenheim, in 1952.
Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, the cylindrical museum building, wider at the top than the bottom, was conceived as a “temple of the spirit” and is one of the 20th century’s most important architectural landmarks. The building opened on October 21, 1959, replacing rented spaces used by the museum since its founding. Its unique ramp gallery extends from just under the skylight in the ceiling in a long, continuous spiral along the outer edges of the building until it reaches the ground level. The building underwent extensive expansion and renovations from 1992 to 1993 (when an adjoining tower was built) and from 2005 to 2008. Early years
Solomon Guggenheim, guided by his art adviser, German painter Hilla Rebay, began to collect works by nonobjective artists in 1929. Guggenheim first began to show his collection in his apartment, and as the collection grew, he established the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation in 1937. The foundation’s goal was the “promotion and encouragement and education in art and the enlightenment of the public.” It was endowed to operate one or more museums; Solomon Guggenheim was elected its first President and Rebay its Director.

In 1939, the Guggenheim Foundation’s first museum, “The Museum of Non-Objective Painting”, opened in rented quarters at 24 East 54th Street in New York City and showcased art by early modernists such as Rudolf Bauer, Rebay, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee and Piet Mondrian. During the life of Guggenheim’s first museum, Guggenheim continued to add to his collection, acquiring paintings by Marc Chagall, Robert Delaunay, Fernand Léger, Amedeo Modigliani and Pablo Picasso. The collection quickly outgrew its original space, and so in 1943, Rebay and Guggenheim wrote a letter to Frank Lloyd Wright asking him to design a permanent structure for the collection. It took Wright 15 years, 700 sketches, and six sets of working drawings to create the museum. From 1943 to early 1944, Wright produced four different sketches for the initial design. One of the plans (scheme C) was a hexagonal shape as opposed to the other three circular sketches. It was the only design of the four to have level floors for the galleries without the use of one ramp continuing around the building. At the same time, Rebay was searching for sites for the museum. She selected the museum’s site at the corner of 89th Street and Fifth Avenue, overlooking Central Park.

In 1953, the foundation’s collecting criteria expanded under its new director, James Johnson Sweeney. Sweeney rejected Rebay’s dismissal of “objective” painting and sculpture, and he soon acquired Constantin Brâncuşi’s Adam and Eve (1921), followed by works of other modernist sculptors, including Jean Arp, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti and David Smith.[2] Sweeney reached beyond the 20th century to acquire Paul Cézanne’s Man with Crossed Arms (c. 1899).[2] In that year, the foundation also received a gift of 28 important works from the Estate of Katherine S. Dreier, a founder of America’s first collection to be called a modern art museum, the Société Anonyme. Dreier had been a colleague of Rebay’s. The works included Little French Girl (1914–18) by Brâncuşi, an untitled still life (1916) by Juan Gris, a bronze sculpture (1919) by Alexander Archipenko and three collages (1919–21) by German Hanoverian Dadaist Schwitters. It also included works by Calder, Marcel Duchamp, El Lissitzky and Mondrian.[3] Among others, Sweeney also acquired the works of Alberto Giacometti, David Hayes, Willem de Kooning and Jackson Pollock.[4]
Sweeney oversaw the last half dozen years of the construction of the museum building, during which time he had an antagonistic relationship with Frank Lloyd Wright, especially regarding the building’s lighting issues.[5][6] The distinctive cylindrical building, turned out to be Wright’s last major work, as the architect died six months before its opening. From the street, the building looks like a white ribbon curled into a cylindrical stack, wider at the top than the bottom, displaying nearly all curved surfaces. Its appearance is in sharp contrast to the typically rectangular Manhattan buildings that surround it, a fact relished by Wright, who claimed that his museum would make the nearby Metropolitan Museum of Art “look like a Protestant barn.” Internally, the viewing gallery forms a helical spiral ramp climbing gently from ground level to the skylight at the top.
On October 21, 1959, ten years after the death of Solomon Guggenheim and six months after the death of Frank Lloyd Wright, the Museum first opened its doors to large crowds. The building instantly polarized architecture critics, though today it is widely praised. Some of the criticism focused on the idea that the building overshadows the artworks displayed inside, and that it is difficult to properly hang paintings in the shallow, windowless, concave exhibition niches that surround the central spiral. Prior to its opening, twenty-one artists signed a letter protesting the display of their work in such a space.
Thomas M. Messer succeeded Sweeney as director of the museum (but not the foundation) in 1961 and stayed for 27 years, the longest tenure of any of the city’s major arts institutions’ directors. When Messer took over, the museum’s ability to present art at all was still in doubt due to the challenges presented by continuous spiral ramp gallery that is both tilted and has non-vertical curved walls. It is difficult to properly hang paintings in the shallow, windowless exhibition niches that surround the central spiral. Canvasses must be mounted raised from the wall’s surface. Paintings hung slanted back would appear “as on the artist’s easel”. There is limited space within the niches for sculpture.

Almost immediately, in 1962, Messer took a risk putting on a large exhibition that combined the Guggenheim’s paintings with sculptures on loan from the Hirshhorn Museum.Three dimensional sculpture, in particular, raised “the problem of installing such a show in a museum bearing so close a resemblance to the circular geography of hell”, where any vertical object appears tilted in a “drunken lurch” because the slope of the floor and the curvature of the walls could combine to produce vexing optical illusions. It turned out that the combination could work well in the Guggenheim’s space, but, Messer recalled that at the time, “I was scared. I half felt that this would be my last exhibition.” Messer had the foresight to prepare by staging a smaller sculpture exhibition the previous year, in which he discovered how to compensate for the space’s weird geometry by constructing special plinths at a particular angle, so the pieces were not at a true vertical yet appeared to be so. In the earlier sculpture show, this trick proved impossible for one piece, an Alexander Calder mobile whose wire inevitably hung at a true plumb vertical, “suggesting hallucination” in the disorienting context of the tilted floor.
The next year, Messer acquired a private collection from art dealer Justin K. Thannhauser for the museum’s permanent collection. These 73 works include Impressionist, Post-Impressionist and French modern masterpieces, including important works by Paul Gauguin, Edouard Manet, Camille Pissarro, Vincent van Gogh and 32 works by Pablo Picasso.
In 1992, the building was supplemented by an adjoining rectangular tower, taller than the original spiral, designed by the architectural firm of Gwathmey Siegel & Associates Architects.[18] By that point, the building had become iconic enough that this augmentation of Wright’s original design was itself controversial.
In October 2005, Lisa Dennison, a longtime Guggenheim curator, was appointed director of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York. Dennison resigned in July 2007 to work at the auction house Sotheby’s.
From October 2005 to February 2008, Thomas Krens remained director of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, having won a decisive victory over billionaire philanthropist and board member Peter Lewis. A significant contributor to the Guggenheim Foundation, Lewis resigned in 2005 in a dispute with the board over the direction and leadership of the Foundation. Despite this, Krens and Lewis nevertheless continue to agree in describing the building itself as “the most important piece of art in the collection.”
In February 2008, Krens stepped down as the Director of the Guggenheim Foundation, but remains an advisor to the Guggenheim’s international expansion projects. The search for a new Director, who will head both the New York museum and the Foundation was recently completed with the Board’s appointment of Richard Armstrong—formerly director of Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Museum of Art—as its fifth director.
Exterior restoration

Between September 2005 and July 2008, the Guggenheim Museum underwent a significant exterior restoration.
In the first phase of this project, a team of restoration architects, structural engineers, and architectural conservators worked together to create a comprehensive assessment of the building’s current condition that determined the structure to be fundamentally sound. This initial condition assessment included:
the removal of 11 coats of paint from the original surface, revealing hundreds of cracks caused over the years, primarily from seasonal temperature fluctuations
detailed monitoring of the movement of selected cracks over 17 months
impact-echo technology, in which sound waves are sent into the concrete and the rebound is measured in order to locate voids within the walls
extensive laser surveys of the exterior and interior surfaces, believed to be the largest laser model ever compiled
core drilling to gather samples of the original concrete and other construction materials
testing of potential repair materials.
Much of the interior of the building was restored during the 1992 renovation and addition by Gwathmey Siegel and Associates Architects. The 2005–2008 restoration primarily addresses the exterior of the original building and the infrastructure. This includes the skylights, windows, doors, concrete and gunite facades and exterior sidewalk, as well as the climate-control. The goal will be to preserve as much significant historical fabric of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum as possible, while accomplishing necessary repairs and attaining a suitable environment for the building’s continuing use as a museum.[24]On September 22, 2008, friends and supporters of the Guggenheim gathered in New York to mark the completion of the 3-year renovation of the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Museum. New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg officiated at the celebration that culminated, just after sunset, with the premiere of artist Jenny Holzer’s tribute For the Guggenheim, a work commissioned in honor of Peter B. Lewis, who was a major benefactor in the Museum restoration project. Other supporters of the $29 million dollar restoration included the Board of Trustees of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, and the Department of Cultural Affairs of the City of New York. Additional support was provided by the State of New York and MAPEI Corporation.The museum was registered as a National Historic Landmark on October 6, 2008.
Significance in popular culture

The Guggenheim interior
The building has become a cultural icon and can be seen widely throughout popular culture. It is featured in Matthew Barney’s The Cremaster Cycle, Bye Bye Birdie, Men in Black, When in Rome, Downtown 81, Ugly Betty and prominently in The International, where a major shootout occurs in the museum. (In fact, a life-size replica of the museum was built for this scene.. The film, Mr. Popper’s Penguins has a sequence where the penguins cause a disturbance entering the museum, wander to the top of the gallery structure and slide down the entire spiral structure to the ground floor. The New Yorker has included the museum multiple times on its cover and cartoons.
The Marvel Comics Guide to New York City (2007) by Peter Sanderson points out that the Guggenheim museum played a part in Daredevil (Marvel Comics), vol. 1, #61 (1970), What If (comics) (featuring Conan the Barbarian), vol. 1, #13 (1979), and Thor (Marvel Comics) #447-48 (1992).

The Redwood Valley Railway is a ridable miniature railroad in Tilden Regional Park near Berkeley, California. It was established in 1952 by Erich Thomsen, and has expanded to 1.25 miles of track and over 160,000 passengers a year.
The railroad uses 5″ scale model live steam locomotives on a 15 in (381 mm) narrow gauge track.

Rolling stock
The Redwood Valley Railway maintains a dozen or so wooden gondolas, built similar to those found on 36″ narrow-gauge lines in the American West. The gondolas, equipped with seating for up to eight adults, are the mainstay passenger rolling stock for this operation. The RVRY also owns three stock cars which have been specifically built to carry passengers as well. These are often favorites with small children, although a full-sized adult can comfortably fit inside.
Other equipment includes a boxcar, extra convertible gondolas, which can either haul passengers or satisfy M.O.W. needs.
The RVRy. owns numerous four-wheel maintenance-of-way cars known as “jimmies”, which have specialized uses such as welding, tie replacement, or carrying ballast.
The RVRy. also rosters a single flatcar, built as a high school shop project by one of the crew in the 1970s. This rugged flatcar has seen thousands of uses, and is one of the most versatile cars on the railroad.
Unique among the roster of cars is a coal gondola, once used to carry extra coal for the #4. Coal was used up until the mid-1970s when the #4 was converted to fuel oil. The coal gondola, with its higher sides, is infrequently used. It currently carries a few dozen metal folding chairs for the annual meet.
A favorite with both young and old is the caboose. Based on a D&RGW 36″ gauge prototype, this “short” center cupola caboose has graced the end of most revenue trains for over 30 years.

Parts for a 2-4-4 Forney and a 2-6-0 exist, but currently remain unassembled. Plans for a second caboose and a lavish, scale (down to the furniture, wallpaper, and bar with tiny glasses) business car are in the works.
As of mid-2010 the boiler for the #13, the aforementioned 2-6-0 has been manufactured. Not to be confused with a visiting GSP&P #13 from the Glenwood Southpark and Pacific.
The #9, a brand-new diesel-hydraulic switching locomotive is in the planning and development stages and should look somewhat similar to the temperamental but faithful #2. The #9 will have a diesel engine instead of a gasoline engine, and will be built as a heavier and more powerful two-axle diesel locomotive, similar to <25ton American industrial locomotives like those found on narrow gauge operations around the country.

SAN FRANCISCO — Crews restoring the Murphy Windmill in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park are celebrating a milestone.

Crowds watch as workers place a 64-ton dome on the historic landmark Murphy windmill during its repair in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, Monday, Sept. 12, 2011. The windmill was constructed in 1905 and is one of the largest windmills in the world. It originally served to irrigate the park. The dome was repaired in Holland. The flags below the American and San Francisco flags are the Dutch and Irish flags.

The windmill’s 68-ton copper dome was placed back on top of the structure on Monday after undergoing nearly a decade of restoration.

The work is part of a multi-million dollar project to bring the six-story windmill, which once pumped water to the rest of the park, back online. Built in 1905, the windmill languished for decades until the restoration work began in 2002.

The project is expected to be completed by the middle of 2012, when the windmill’s sails and gears should be back on and the area around it landscaped.

Baker Beach is a public beach on the peninsula of San Francisco, California, U.S.. The beach lies on the shore of the Pacific Ocean to the northwest of the city. It is roughly a half mile (800 m) long, beginning just south of Golden Gate Point (where the Golden Gate Bridge connects with the peninsula), extending southward toward the Seacliff peninsula, the Palace of the Legion of Honor and the Sutro Baths. The northern section of Baker Beach is “frequented by clothing-optional sunbathers”. As such it is considered a nude beach.History
Baker Beach is part of the Presidio, which was a military base from the founding of San Francisco by the Spanish in 1812 until 1997. In 1904, it was fortified with disappearing gun installations known as Battery Chamberlin, which can still be viewed today. When the Presidio was decommissioned as a U.S. Army base, it became part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, which is administered by the National Park Service.
From 1986 to 1990, the north end of Baker Beach was the original site of the Burning Man art festival. In 1990, park police allowed participants to raise the traditional large statue but not to set it on fire, since the beach enforces a limit on the size of any campfires. Subsequent Burning Man events have taken place in Black Rock Desert, Nevada.
A fatal shark attack occurred on Baker Beach on May 7, 1959[5] when 18-year old Albert Kogler Jr. was attacked by a great white shark while he was 15 feet deep in water. This was the only shark attack recorded on Baker Beach.
Large outcrops of serpentine cliffs occur along the Pacific coast near Baker Beach. When rising from the land surface, serpentine produces a low-calcium, high-magnesium soil that can allow for rare species of plants to develop in the vicinity. This may explain the presence of Hesperolinon congestum (the Marin Dwarf Flax, a threatened plant) in surrounding areas — at Baker Beach.

IT’S a hot day on LaGrange Street. Across from the gaudy Club New Orleans, on the shady side of this street in Boston’s notorious “combat zone,” Arthur Stephens takes a small paring knife out of his pocket. He carefully cuts through the black threads of time. “Six and seven-eighths,” he says quietly. In his hand is a beige man’s hat. No measuring, no guessing the size. He knows hats, this hat, any hat. The knife cuts the threads holding the old, black hatband. It falls to the floor.

“This is a good beaver hat,” says Mr. Stephens, twirling it over the knuckles of one hand. He will spend the next hour or so in loving restoration of another man’s favorite hat.

For 54 years, inside a narrow LaGrange Street shop darkened by time and steam, and filled with the rakishness of hats on pegs everywhere, Stephens has plied the almost forgotten art of a hatter. Like a poet polishing verbs, Stephens makes, restores, and repairs fine hats. During the half-century he has been motivated by the axiom “A man doesn’t looked dressed unless he wears a hat.”

“My sisters were hat trimmers,” he says proudly, ready to nurture just about any stained, drooping hat into new sheen and bearing. “My father was a hatter, and my brothers were hatters, too. See, I like what I’m doing. You gotta like what you’re doing. I’m 80 going on 81.

Arthur Stephens is the only bona fide, art-for-the-sake-of-art hatter left in Boston. Once there were dozens. Ernesto Marrone has been a customer for 10 years. “You can’t get this kind of service anywhere else,” he says, “not even in New York. I wear hats because I grew up in an old Italian neighborhood where hats were customary.”

Long before Stephens bought the shop on LaGrange, a man named Hand first opened it on a downtown Boston street. The year was 1860, the year Abraham Lincoln was elected President, and Mr. Hand proclaimed his shop “Hand the Hatter.”

The shop thrived down one century to another, satisfying Bostonian gentlemen who wore homburgs, panamas, top hats, trilbies, derbys, westerns, fedoras, and even boaters. And when the young and ambitious Stephens bought the shop in 1934, he kept the name.

Today, above the door, slightly weathered and melancholy, a black-and-white sign still says, “Hand the Hatter.”

The small shop window – protected by a steel grate – is so dusty and gray there is no seeing through it. One step up and through the open door and into the musty shop, and you have entered a time warp sliced from a faded calendar, circa 1930, with hats, hats, and more hats.

“You walk in here and say, `How come all this junk is here?”’ says Stephens, a small man with rounded shoulders and a gruff, sentimental voice. “But everything is ready for any kind of hat. You never know when you’re going to use this stuff.”

“This stuff” lying about is a Noah’s ark of the hatter’s craft. Shelves and tables full of wooden hat blocks, shelves full of wooden flanges to shape brims, a 40-year-old hissing copper boiler (steam for steaming the hats), ancient cans of “luring” grease (to bring out the sheen of hats), an old “ironing” machine that heats and shapes the crown of hat while it spins slowly on a block, and off in one corner a bulbous, heated “sand” machine (a flannel bag filled with heated beach sand) to lower over a hat on a flange to shape or reshape the brim.
“I used to work until 2 in the morning,” says Stephens, recalling the heady, quicker pace of the 1930s. “Saturdays, Sundays. I’d go out to eat, take a shower at a hotel, come back here, and go to work again. I could knock off maybe 40 to 50 hats a day. Today if I do eight or 10 I’m doing a big day’s work.”

Stephens acknowledges that it was probably a hatless President named John Kennedy who helped take the steam out of the men’s hat business. That and all the vets returning from World War II as men who refused to wear hats anymore. Add the long hair of men in the 1960s, and hats had a dim future.

“Kennedy didn’t wear a hat,” says Stephens, “and everybody stopped wearing them. Men are wearing all different kinds of hats now, but still not like they used to. Do I wear hats? Sure. I keep a couple in my car.”

He pauses by the ironing machine, watching the blocked brown hat turning as the hot “iron” moves automatically and slowly around it, squeaking all the way. On a shelf a fan pushes the hot air around.

His voice lowers. “Way back I made hats for Jimmy Durante,” he says. “His valet used to come here and get them. He’d say, `Jimmy needs a couple of hats,’ and I’d know just what he wanted. Basil Rathbone used to buy hats from me, too.”

A new hat from Stephens will cost from $125 to $150. A restoration begins about $20 and often ends there, no matter how long it takes. “I never really check the time, to tell you the truth,” he says. “I like the work, and when it’s done, it’s done.”

In the late afternoon a customer of 35 years comes in: a stocky, older man named Mitch with a straw hat needing the brim smoothed and stiffened. Stephens repairs the hat in minutes, using the sand machine and some deftly applied glue.

“I bought my first custom-made hat here in 1950,” says Mitch, standing at the small counter near an enormous old cash register with a hand crank. “I got one he made me a few years ago, and a couple of others,” says Mitch. He says he would like another, a light gray this time.

He and Stephens strike an accord. A price of $85, with $40 down. Stephens fills out an order. Mitch peels off two $20 bills on the counter. “I don’t want you pushing yourself,” he says to Stephens. They both laugh and agree that three weeks should be long enough to fashion the hat. They shake hands. Mitch says warmly, “I need you. Don’t push yourself on this.”

Minutes later, a young man in a leather vest and tie enters and picks up a custom-made hat, a tan, narrow-brimmed trilby. Stephens packs the hat in a new Stetson hat box and tosses in a cluster of small red and yellow feathers for the hatband. When the young man leaves, Stephens says: “If you’re any kind of a businessman, you throw a man a few feathers.”

Late in the afternoon he sits in one of the four old chairs just inside the front door in a pensive mood. “These are all old customers now,” he says quietly. “They know I won’t sell them a bad hat. If I had said a $100 for the hat, Mitch would have paid it. No arguments.” — at Combat Zone

During its heyday the Bitter End showcased a wide range of talented and legendary musicians, comedians, and theatrical performers.[1] In 1968 Paul Colby, who began his career as a song plugger for Benny Goodman’s publishing company, and went on to work for Frank Sinatra, Duke Ellington, and Guy Lombardo, became the manager and booking agent at The Bitter End, and in 1974 he purchased it.[2][3] In the mid 1970s, the club became known as the birthplace of Bob Dylans Rolling Thunder Revue, which featured such names as Joni Mitchell, Roger McGuinn, Ramblin’ Jack Elliot, Joan Baez, T-Bone Burnett, Ronee Blakely, Mick Ronson, and many other guest stars. The City of New York bestowed landmark status to the night club on July 23, 1992. Afn Announcement #2 This is a re-issue of Jon’s 1995 European release “Late Rent.” Never before available in the U.S., it contains a collection of recordings featuring Bernard Purdie and Steve Ferrone on drums, as well as Todd Anderson and Alex Foster on sax, Barry Finnerty and Graham Hawthorne, Ray Grappone, Jim Preston and Chuggy Carter. The record is a swinging and funky compilation of original tracks written by Jon Hammond, as well as some anecdotal asides and a guest appearance by Jazzbeaux Collins.
