#WATCHMOVIE HERE: For My Friends In The Nakamichi Audiophile Group

by Jon Hammond

For my friends in the Nakamichi Audiophile Group:
I used good old Maxell Type II cassette tapes for this live recording date I personally recorded on my Nakamichi
550, which I am the original owner purchaser of – I plunked down $550
cash for my Nak at Harvey Electronics on W. 45th Street NYC in 1976 – I
made this recording with 3 Sennheiser
microphones placed around the bandstand in the Ellington Room – the
tune “No X-Cess Baggage Blues” I wrote for my friends at PIA Pakistan International Airlines – they very kindly let me take excess baggage on numerous flights I made with them out of John F. Kennedy International Airport – when you play Hammond Organ, it’s impossible to travel light. I go way back with all of these fine musicians – that’s Chuggy Carter on the percussion – Ray Grapponedrums – Joe Berger aka Joe Berger2 in the string section on his custom built JJ Guitars – tenor saxophonist Todd Anderson, Todd was my teacher for arranging and composition back in 1973 at the Berklee College of Music
in Beantown MA – Todd is also on my very first album ‘Late Rent’ one of
New York’s finest – all these cats are veteran players and studio
musicians, and I have been around the block a few times myself – yours’
truly Jon Hammond at my 1959 Hammond B3 organ and covering the bass as well – through my custom built Bill Beer super high-power Leslie speaker with all JBL
speaker and horn components – enjoy! *Note: When I’m talking, the audio
is back to the vid tape – I just plugged an SM-58 in to a little Fender Amp Can battery powered amp – back to basics and analog, big thanks to Willy Hermann Services William Hermann Jr.

got my intermittent left channel working! – Jon Hammond Band
– the “Blend Mic” ‘3rd channel’ Nakamichi system gives a unique 3
dimensional sound to live audio recordings – that’s why even today the
old Grateful Dead heads crave these machines – can’t beat it – and you get real good at flipping cassettes! – JH

Times Square, New York City.

Here I am with one of my all-time heroes, the honorable Terence Hallinan
–

when I played Terence’s birthday party a few years back in San
Francisco CA at Rasselas Jazz Club & Restaurant on Fillmore Street
when Terence was running for re-election as District Attorney of San
Francisco, and he was a great DA! The who’s who of San Francisco were
there in his honor, including former SF Mayor Willie Brown, House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi,
Lisa Hallinan and all the Hallinan’s,
Mayor of New York David N.
Dinkins, club owner Agonafer Shiferaw – and many more, it was a grand
party…big honor to play for Terence and everybody there! – Jon Hammond

Behind The Beat http://behindthebeat.com/2004/12/jon-hammond-late-rent/ by Steve Rosenfeld “Jon Hammond says “the fingers are the singers.'” The latest CD from this exceptional and soulful Hammond organist is the proof. “Late Rent” draws on decades of great recording sessions and top live performances to showcase his own playing and many top jazz and funk artists. It shows why the Hammond organ is one of the most enduring electric instruments and why Hammond is one of its best players.”

“Following an altercation between sets, Morgan’s common-law wife Helen More (a.k.a. Morgan), shot him. The injuries were not immediately fatal, but the ambulance service was reluctant to go into the neighborhood where the club was located. They took so long to get there that Morgan bled to death. He was 33 years old”

Hamburg Germany Elbe Tunnel (1911)
Down under the Elbe River in the Old Elbe Tunnel – Jon Hammond Light ears away
Elbe Tunnel Wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elbe_Tunnel_(1911)

Old Elbe Tunnel or St. Pauli Elbe Tunnel (German: Alter Elbtunnel (coll.) or St. Pauli Elbtunnel (official name)) which opened in 1911, is a pedestrian and vehicle tunnel in Hamburg, Germany. The 426 m (1,398 ft) long tunnel was a technical sensation; 24 m (80 ft) beneath the surface, two tubes with 6 m (20 ft) diameter connect central Hamburg with the docks and shipyards on the south side of the river Elbe. This meant a big improvement for tens of thousands of workers in one of the busiest harbours in the world.

Rest In Peace Donald Byrd – these images from my coverage of Beacons in Jazz Concert tribute to Cab Calloway *in middle image with host MC Bill Cosby, Donald in the middle, also in back of the late great alto player educator Arnie Lawrence – May 7th 1990, RIP Donald Byrd – Jon Hammond
Donald’s Wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donald_Byrd

Donaldson Toussaint L’Ouverture Byrd II (December 9, 1932 – February 4, 2013) was an American jazz and rhythm and blues trumpeter. A sideman for many other jazz musicians of his generation, Byrd is best known as one of the only bebop jazz musicians who successfully pioneered the funk and soul genres while simultaneously remaining a pop artist.
Donaldson Toussaint L’Ouverture Byrd II
Born December 9, 1932
Origin Detroit, Michigan, United States
Died February 4, 2013
Genres Bop
Hard bop
Funk
Soul
Instruments Trumpet
Associated acts Pepper Adams, Gigi Gryce, Jackie McLean, Hank Mobley

Byrd attended Cass Technical High School. He performed with Lionel Hampton before finishing high school. After playing in a military band during a term in the United States Air Force, he obtained a bachelor’s degree in music from Wayne State University and a master’s degree from Manhattan School of Music.
While still at the Manhattan School, he joined Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, as replacement for Clifford Brown. In 1955, he recorded with Jackie McLean and Mal Waldron. After leaving the Jazz Messengers in 1956, he performed with many leading jazz musicians of the day, including John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Thelonious Monk, and later Herbie Hancock.
Byrd’s first regular group was a quintet that he co-led from 1958-61 with baritone saxophonist Pepper Adams, an ensemble whose hard-driving performances are captured “live” on At the Half Note Cafe. In June 1964, Byrd jammed with jazz legend Eric Dolphy in Paris just two weeks before Dolphy’s death from insulin shock.
In the 1970s, Byrd moved away from the hard-bop jazz idiom and began to record jazz fusion and rhythm and blues. He teamed up with the Mizell Brothers (producer-writers Larry and Fonce) for Black Byrd in 1973. It was highly successful and became Blue Note Records’ highest-ever selling album. The title track climbed to No. 19 on Billboard′s R&B chart and reached the Hot 100 pop chart, peaking at No. 88. The Mizell brothers’ follow-up albums for Byrd, Street Lady, Places and Spaces and Stepping into Tomorrow, were also big sellers, and have subsequently provided a rich source of samples for acid jazz artists such as Us3. Most of the material for the albums was written by Larry Mizell.
In 1973, he created The Blackbyrds, a fusion group consisting of his best students. They scored several major hits including “Happy Music” (No. 3 R&B, No. 19 pop), “Walking In Rhythm” (No. 4 R&B, No. 6 pop) and “Rock Creek Park”.
In 1994, Byrd appeared on the Red Hot Organization’s compilation album, Stolen Moments: Red Hot + Cool. The album, meant to raise awareness and funds in support of the AIDS epidemic in relation to the African-American community, was heralded as “Album of the Year” by Time Magazine.
He has taught music at Rutgers University, the Hampton Institute, New York University, Howard University, Queens College, Oberlin College, Cornell University and Delaware State University.
In addition to his master’s from Manhattan School of Music, Byrd has two master’s degrees from Columbia University. He received a law degree in 1976, and his doctorate from Columbia University Teachers College in 1982.
In September 2009, he was named an artist-in-residence at Delaware State University.[1] Byrd lives in Teaneck, New Jersey.[2]

Frankfurt Germany — “Go Green” forget the tour bus, push your gear to the gig and ride the rails – Jon Hammond

*Note: Excerpt from article in April 2008 ALLEGRO Magazine of Local 802 Musicians Union in honor of Earth Day April 22 and Environmentalism “Beat On The Street”: I am about to go over to Germany for my annu- al music tour with my Hammond organ so I’d like to tell you my way of doing a “green tour” that I have perfected. In the past, a Hammond B3 organ weighed 425 pounds (without the Leslie speaker) so it was not possible for me to take one to Europe. In 1991, I got the first really portable model. It was one of the first 10 prototypes of the Ham- mond-Suzuki XB-2, with multi-voltage for any- where in the world. I flew over to Germany with it on Pakistan Airlines. I found that by using a Kart-A-Bag Super 600 heavy-duty luggage cart with “stair slides” (like what UPS and FedEx uses), I could hoist it up on to any train or bus. I traveled all over Europe this way, and was pic- tured doing it eventually in a magazine ad for Kart- A-Bag for quite a while. They had a contest going for a long time where they would give away one “Ham- mond Super 600 Kart-A-Bag” every month from a drawing. I jokingly refer to it as my “tour bus.” I see a lot of bands touring with big tour buses and they look real nice and comfy but they also burn a lot of fuel. With my technique I ride on the high speed trains in Germany, the local trains, up and down in the Metro of Paris and in Prague on the street cars. Jon Hammond *Photo: Organist and Local 802 member Jon Hammond with his touring rig waiting for a train in Germany. One way to go green is to skip the tour bus altogether. — at Frankfurt (Main) Hauptbahnhof
