FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – SRJC Press Release Santa Rosa, CA — The Santa Rosa Junior College (SRJC) Music Department of Santa Rosa Junior College (SRJC) presents a jazz concert featuring the Bennett Friedman Quartet on Friday, November 13, at 8 p.m. in Newman Auditorium at the Santa Rosa campus located on 1501 Mendocino Avenue. The concert will feature Joe Gilman on piano, Robb Fisher on bass, and drummer Akira Tana. Proceeds from the concert benefit the SRJC Foundation Jazz Studies Fund. General admission is $10, or $5 for students and seniors. Tickets are available at the door only. $4 parking permits are required and available on campus lots.
The performance will feature the works of Thelonious Monk, Randy Brecker, and Blossom Dearie, as well as a new arrangement of Gershwin’s “Strike Up the Band.”

Dr. Joe Gilman, Pianist

Dr. Joe
Gilman will be the featured pianist for this concert. Well known in jazz
circles for his recordings and appearances with vibraphonist Bobby
Hutcherson, Dr. Gilman is a full-time professor of music at American
River College in Sacramento, an adjunct professor of jazz studies at CSU
Sacramento, and a longtime associate of the Brubeck Institute and the
Stanford Jazz Workshop. He was also the music director of Capital Jazz
Project from 1997 to 2011.

Dr. Gilman has been the primary
pianist with jazz vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson since September 2006,
and the Sacramento Jazz Orchestra since 2010. He has also performed
professionally with Eddie Harris, Joe Locke, Chris Botti, Nicholas
Payton, Charles McPherson, Wycliffe Gordon, David “Fathead” Newman, and
Slide Hampton, and has recorded with Joe Henderson, Bobby Hutcherson,
Jeff Watts, and Tootie Heath.

Dr. Gilman has twice been an
International Jazz Ambassador through the Kennedy Center for the
Performing Arts and USIA, traveling to West Africa in 1999 and East and
Southern Africa in 2000.

Robb Fisher, Bassist

Bassist Robb
Fisher was a member of Cal Tjader’s groundbreaking Latin/Jazz group for
six years. He toured extensively with Tjader and recorded many albums
with the group, including the Grammy Award winning album “La Onda Va
Bien.” Fisher has also recorded with jazz musicians Art Pepper, Carmen
McCrae, and Anita O’Day.

Akira Tana, Drummer

Drummer Akira
Tana earned degrees from Harvard University and the New England
Conservatory of Music. He has performed with Sonny Rollins, Sonny Stitt,
Zoot Sims, Milt Jackson, and many other giants of jazz. Tana has taught
at Rutgers University, Queens College, Jersey City State College, New
York University, and is currently on the faculty at San Francisco State
University and the Jazz Conservatory of California in Berkeley,

Bennett Friedman, Saxophonist

Bennett Friedman has performed at the Monterey Jazz Festival, the
Stanford Jazz Workshop, the San Jose Jazz Festival, the Healdsburg Jazz
Festival, the Monterey Bay Blues Festival, and the Russian River Jazz
Festival. He has been featured as a soloist with Frank Sinatra, Rosemary
Clooney, Natalie Cole, and Marvin Gaye. Friedman has taught Jazz
Studies at SRJC since 1977. He is the recipient of a National Endowment
for the Arts grant for jazz composition.

„Organ meets Bigband“ das LaJJazzO M-V LandesJugendJazzOrchester Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Am 01.08.2015 ist das Landesjugendjazzorchester Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (LaJazzO MV) mit seinem diesjährigen Solisten Jon Hammond wieder im Klostergarten Rostock zu Gast. Covering Jimmy Smith’s Back at The Chicken Shack and The Sermon – Nachdem sich in den vergangenen Jahren das LaJazzO MV mit den in der Big Band vorkommenden Instrumenten musikalisch auseinandersetzte, wird in 2015 die Jazzorgel musikalisch thematisiert werden. Unter dem Titel “Organ meets Big Band” wird dieses sehr traditionsreiche Instrument der Jazzgeschichte in den Mittelpunkt der Konzertreihe im folgenden Jahr gestellt. Als Jazzinstrument wurde es von Fats Waller in den 30er Jahren eingeführt und hatte seine Hochzeit in den 50er Jahren durch seine Vertreter wie Jimmy Smith. Der international renommierte New Yorker Jazzorganist Jon Hammond wird zusammen mit dem LaJazzO MV unter der Leitung von Michael Leuschner den besonderen Charme dieses Instrumentes wieder zum Leben erwecken. Im Programm sind unter anderem Titel von Jimmy Smith, arrangiert von Steve Gray – eine Leihgabe aus dem Archiv der NDR-Bigband.

Jon Hammond studierte in den siebziger Jahren am Berklee College of Music und am City College San Francisco. Konzertreisen führten ihn quer durch die Vereinigten Staaten und Kanada. In seiner eigenen ‘Jon Hammond Show’ spielte er mit Musikern wie Dizzy Gillespie, Paul Butterfield, Jaco Pastorius, John Entwistle, Sammy Davis Jr., Percy Sledge und vielen anderen. Auch in Europa fand und findet seine Musik unverändert viele Anhänger. Die Medien berichten wiederholt von einem unverwechselbaren und prägenden Sound. Jon Hammond hat u.a. auf der 20. Frankfurter Musikmesse mitgewirkt und tritt vornehmlich in Hamburg auf. “The Jon Hammond Show” is a funky, swinging Jazz instrumental revue, featuring notable international soloists and reflecting the influences of Miles Davis, The Crusaders and Jimmy Smith.
