JOHNNY DEPP, ALICE COOPER AND JOE WALSH ROCKED NAMM

depp
One of the less-covered gigs at NAMM this year was the Duesenberg party featuring Johnny Depp and friends, partly due to the “no pro camera” policy I guess. Depp has become somewhat of a regular at NAMM and last year jammed with Aerosmith. This year Alice Cooperand Joe Walsh teamed up with Depp to deliver the most rockin’ event of the trade show.
depp2
Beginning the night was Brian Ray’s band The Bayonettes, who played an hour of original and cover material. Brian has been a regular member of Paul McCartney’s band for over a decade. Next up was Johnny Depp himself, together with some old friends bassist Bruce Witkin and guitarist Joey Malone, and yet another member of Paul McCartney’s band, resident drummer Abe Laborial Jr. The band was introduced as the “No Name Band”, probably because they are a loose bunch of players and not a serious project. The boys played two original songs before introducing legendary musician Joe Walsh who sat in for the rest of their set. Together the band performed Funk 49, Rocky Mountain Way, Walk Away and a cover of Search And Destroy. Not to be outdone, Alice joined the core band for a swift and merciless run through of true rock n roll classics – Brown Sugar, Revolution, I’m Eighteen, School’s Out, Come Together and My Generation.
deppguitar

The guitar played by Depp auctioned for charity. Pic by Jon Hammond
Two charities benefitted from the night’s gig via the auction of a Duesenberg guitar signed by the artists on the night. One of those charities is a foundation which was founded by Italian master chef Bruno Serato. Bruno feeds around 1,200 hungry impoverished children every day with Pasta via his charity called “Caterina’s Club”. The other charity is Alice Cooper’s Solid Rock Teen Center, saving kids one guitar at a time from going into gang life.
Internationally renown Hammond organ player and friend to Australian Musician, Jon Hammond captured some footage of the night. You can watch it here.
There are also some photos courtesy of Jon and also by Kyler Clark, @CerealKyler from Alice Cooper’s website

Additional Musical Category Notes:

This new release from Jon Hammond marks his move into mainstream jazz. Utilizing the famous NDR Orchestra and Studios in Hamburg, Germany, Jon has crafted an excellent organ jazz record utilizing drums, sax and trombone. Outstanding support from saxophone soloist Lutz Buchner adds a lyrical modern jazz sound to the recordings. Excellent drumming by Heinz Lichius and the soulful sound of Joe Gallardo on trombone round out the disc. Great classic tunes are covered, along with some originals, including “My One and Only Love,” “Skylark,” “Besame Mucho,” “Blues In The Night” and “No X-Cess Baggage Blues.”

“This was, without exaggeration, one of the best acoustics-related technical decisions for the NDR I have been involved in during the past few years,” comments NDR sound engineer Michael Plötz. “The digital audio world now enjoys incomparably good sound thanks to the use of the AX 24 in the production chain of this studio. The combination of a DAD AX24 and the SSL Duality console places us in a new ‘analog/digital world'”.

NDR Regie 1 in the Funkhaus am Rothenbaum

The completely reworked Studio 1 and Regie 1 at NDR Radio’s Funkhaus am Rothenbaum is designed primarily for recording the NDR Bigband, one of the best finest bands in Germany. Studio 1 is built around a 72 fader SSL Duality and Sequoia digital audio workstation software. Eight NTP DAD AX24 converters are connected via MADI to the workstation.

Jon Hammond in New York City just back from Germany music tour and 20th year at Musikmesse Frankfurt trade show…digging deep in to the archives to present a special show put together by Jon in 1993 in Frankfurt Hausen-BROTFABRIK (the old Bread Factory) Jon Hammond presenting French Pianist FRANCOISE PUJOL first time in Germany along with RICHARD BONA on bass from Cameroon & Paris, now living in NY and FRANCIS LASSOUS – drums/batterie. A crazy story about how Jon convinced Bonsedorfer Piano Company to bring their most expensive concert-grand piano for Francoise to play there. The musicians got in to an argument at sound check and Jon almost had to play the famous piano, but thankfully it worked out and the tension made for some great playing! Never before heard (I wonder why?!) Also a new track from Hungarian super-star saxophonist TONY LAKATOS’ brand-new album “Gypsy Colours” on the SKIP RECORDS label. Tony’s original composition “Mr. Fried” played and recorded with his brothers in Budapest Hungary. Thank you Tony and Lakatos Family! Jon’s trio live at Bruno’s in San Francisco featuring drummer RONNIE SMITH Jr. from Oakland CA and dedicated to United Airlines: “No Excess Baggage Blues” from Jon Hammond’s new album “NDR SESSIONS Projekt” for KYOU/KYCY 1550 AM, home of the Oakland A’s! “Meet The Incredible Sk1 Hammond with Michael Falkenstein and Jon Hammond”
First look at this exciting new keyboard product weighing in at 7 kilos, just over 15 lbs., it sounds like a real Hammond B3 organ with Leslie, or a full size grand piano, any type of famous vintage electric piano or synthesizer. This keyboard does it all and with original Hammond drawbars and it’s feather light. Sk1 has a built in USB flash drive input, the keys are ‘bullet proof’ waterfall style keys that can hold up to extreme pressure of rockin’ rock musicians, swinging jazz musicians and can even sound like a huge pipe organ. This film will blow your mind.

Jon Hammond at NAMM
The great Jon Hammond and Joe Berger played a “Mini-Concert” at our booth during the recent NAMM Expo in Anaheim California. Jon, seen here playing the XK Pro system swung like a beast as always, and Joe’s nimble chops showed that the G27 Guitar Leslie makes  a fine Jazz Guitar amp. The crowd that gathered bopped and boogied to the groove-who needed a drummer? Not these guys!! Classic Hammond Organ Jazz is thing of beauty and a joy forever, Thanks to Jon and Joe for a fine performance!

Jon Hammond To Record Sessions On His Original Nakamichi 550 Dual-Tracer Portable Recorder

January 12, 2010

Jon Hammond To Record Sessions On His Original Nakamichi 550 Dual-Tracer Portable Recorder

Hammond says: I bought the Nakamichi 550 new in 1976 at Harvey Electronics on W. 45th St. in NYC for $550, “They didn’t call it the Nakamichi 550 for nothing!”

The machine is now being overhauled by California Historical Radio Society Vice President Scott Robinson, he is an expert Engineer and Dolby specialist. We are very excited about resurrecting the legendary recorder with state of art new microphones from Sennheiser and Superlux to record my upcoming sessions with studio drummer Bernard Purdie, we have a show coming up at the Winter NAMM trade show in Anaheim January 15th on the Hilton-Muzeo stage.
Nothing like the fat sound of the 550 with it’s unique “Blend Channel” 3rd mic gives it a dimensional sound that is still unsurpassed in digital portable recording machines.
Jon also uses the Nakamichi in the field to record segments of his daily radio broadcast HammondCast on KYOURADIO on the CBS Radio Network now in 5th year, best 550 I ever spent says Hammond.

We played a 5 night run at Mikell’s with my mint condition Hammond B3 organ as Jon Hammond and The Late Rent Session Men
Bernard Purdie and Jon Hammond at Local 802 Musicians Union

I still have the B3 and custom built Bill Beer Keyboard Products Super Leslie in road cases for tours of Rolling Stones type epic proportions, but since it won’t fit in to a taxi cab and or commercial airline situation, I tour with either my Hammond XK-1 or Hammond XK-3 organ and when I am on the West Coast to complete the vintage sound I use my 1965 Fender Band-Master piggyback amplifier with 2 x 12″ stock Jensen speakers, it really kicks ass, Mr. H Ohno at Suzuki Hammond did an incredible job of designing a portable organ that faithfully reproduces the famous Hammond sound, and the warm sound of Leo Fender‘s tube amps completes the system to my satisfaction. It blows a lot of people’s minds when they realize I’m not at the B3, but it has the same emotional impact, as I can see time after time when I play this rig in hospitals and nursing home situations.

What’s old is new and what’s new is old, I use the best of the new and the old to get the desired results.
