Sennheiser In The News led by system designer Norbert Hilbich AMBEO 3D audio soundscapes guidePORT system wow! Jon Hammond

Installation AV Says: “Sennheiser has announced a new collaboration with the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in London for the forthcoming exhibition You Say You Want a Revolution? Records & Rebels 1966 – 1970.

The exhibition will open to the public on 10 September 2016 and run until 26 February 2017, following which it will tour internationally. Sennheiser will provide immersive sound utilising its AMBEO 3D audio technology delivered through a guidePORT audio guide system.

Curated by Geoffrey Marsh and Victoria Broackes, the curatorial team behind the V&A’s David Bowie is, the new exhibition is designed in six distinct sections. It will explore the late 1960s through hundreds of exhibits from the V&A’s extensive collections alongside a selection of loans that range from design, music, film, fashion and consumer products to photography, posters and books. It is designed by Nissen Richards Studio, with video content designed by Fray studio, and sound design by Carolyn Downing.

Music will play a key role in the exhibition, said Broakes: “The music running through You Say You Want a Revolution will represent the backbone and heart of the exhibition; it will be an object in itself. Therefore, we are delighted to be working with Sennheiser once again. Their expertise in 3D immersive audio will push the limits of the sound experience still further.”

Working closely with the exhibition’s sound designer Carolyn Downing, the Sennheiser team, led by system designer Norbert Hilbich (left of picture), will be setting up two AMBEO 3D audio soundscapes. One will place visitors in an immersive environment evoking the political issues and fight against censorship and the establishment of the late 1960s while the other will recreate a live concert atmosphere with upmixed audio material from the period.

Hilbich told Installation that the new exhibition will contain a lot more music than David Bowie is. “We have quite a big bunch of songs that they think we should transfer to 3D audio, but the process is not finished. There are plenty of ideas – we now have to [think about] how we put it into operation, what will it sound like, which part of the songs we should take and so on.”

After being set up in the studio, Hilbich added, the mix will be adjusted on site to suit the acoustics of the venue – as was also done with the Bowie exhibition.

Visitors will be accompanied through the exhibition by a Sennheiser audio guide system. The guidePORT system will deliver hundreds of personal, automatically triggered stereo feeds simultaneously. It will transmit real-time, lip-sync audio to fully immerse visitors in the sights and sounds of the late 1960s. The system at the V&A will comprise 750 receiver units with high-quality headphones, along with several transmission and trigger units that will be hidden from sight.

Robert Genereux (right of picture), business director system design at Sennheiser, said: “The headphone part [using the guidePORT system] will be similar, but along the way they are going to create ‘disturbances’ in the headphone experience in different sections. This will be a little bit of a difference [from] the guidePORT experience for Bowie, which is uniform all the way from the beginning to the ‘show moment’.”

Daniel Sennheiser, CEO of Sennheiser – pictured (centre) holding a replica of a 1968 set of Sennheiser headphones – commented: “We are absolutely thrilled to cooperate with the Victoria and Albert Museum on yet another fantastic project. The V&A is uniquely positioned to curate an exhibition about this transformational time in our more recent history. The artistic quality of the exhibition together with spectacular exhibits and an innovative state-of-the-art sound experience, featuring Sennheiser’s AMBEO 3D audio technology, will make this exhibition a truly immersive experience.”

PSN Europe Says: “Sennheiser to play major role at Sgt Pepper exhibition”

LINK http://www.psneurope.com/sennheiser-to-play-major-role-at-sgt-pepper-exhibition/

“Shards from Jimi Hendrix’s and Pete Townshend’s shattered guitars… The brown fringe jacket Roger Daltrey wore at Woodstock…. Handwritten lyrics for Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds by the Beatles… The suits worn by John Lennon and George Harrison on the cover of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band…

All of these incredible artefacts are to be included in a major cultural retrospective to be held at the Victoria & Albert (V&A) Museum in September 2016. Called You Say You Want a Revolution? Records and Rebels 1966–70, the exhibition will explore the era-defining significance and impact of the late 1960s upon life today.

It follows the success of 2013’s David Bowie Is – the most popular exhibition ever held at the V&A – and once again, Sennheiser technology, including the guidePORT system and the emerging AMBEO 3D environment, will play a major part in the presentation and production of the show.

You Say You Want a Revolution? Records and Rebels 1966–70 will “investigate the upheaval, the explosive sense of freedom, and the legal changes that took place resulting in a fundamental shift in the mindset of the Western world”, say the curators, Victoria Broakes and Geoffrey Marsh. More than 350 objects from the period, encompassing photography, posters, literature, music, design, film, fashion, and performance, have been procured for the show: even a moon rock, and an Apple 1 computer (of which there are only four working models in the world).

Details of Record and Rebels 1966-70 – which will run from September 2016 to February 2017 – were revealed at former legendary ’60s bar (now a private club) the Bag O’ Nails, just off London’s Carnaby Street, at the end of February. Martin Roth, director of the V&A, said it was one of the most important exhibitions the museum had curated. Broakes and Marsh agreed that the Sgt Pepper suits were some of the most difficult objects to secure – but they were items considered essential to the show.

Levi’s and Sennheiser are key sponsors of the event, along with outfitter Fenwick and stylist Sassoon.

“I knew some of the concept, but not all of it until today, so and I think it’s going to be a really, really exciting exhibition!” Sennheiser co-CEO Daniel Sennheiser told PSNEurope at the launch. He noted that one of the show themes – how the 1960s have shaped how we think today – is very much in tune with his company philosophy.

In an introductory speech at the Bag O’Nails, Daniel spoke of how his grandfather’s business had mass-produced the HD414 headphones starting in 1968, and how it had gone on to be the “most sold headphone in the world”. Later, while clutching a pair based on the original ’60s design, Daniel told PSNEurope that the phones were never planned as a product but came about when some of the Sennheiser engineers were “playing around with microphone capsules” and noticed the transparency of the sound when they were placed close to the ear.

“My grandfather [Fritz Sennheiser] said, OK, let’s make a product out of it. He asked the distributor at the time how many they could sell. But no one could imagine having a hi-fi sound ‘in your head’. The distributor said, maybe 500 worldwide! But grandfather said, to make it work financially, I need to make 5,000.

“So he made 5,000 – and it was sold out in three months. And today, more than 12m pieces have been produced. And we can still sell you replacement earpads for a 1968 pair!” revealed Daniel.

Working with the exhibition’s sound designer Carolyn Downing, the Sennheiser team (led by system designer Norbert Hilbich) will be setting up two AMBEO 3D audio soundscapes at the museum. One will place visitors in an immersive environment evoking the political issues and fight against censorship and the establishment of the late 1960s; the other will recreate a live concert atmosphere with upmixed audio material from the period.

Of AMBEO 3D – demonstrated in London last year but launched official at CES earlier in 2016 – Daniel says: “The idea is to transport you into a different place.

“We’re still learning how to use it and what we [can] do with it. It’s not just one technology, it’s about the capturing, the mixing, the creation of the spacial audio, then the processing and the playback. [But] that’s where Sennheiser is uniquely positioned [at the V&A]: to provide the 3D audio and create an emotional experience in an exhibition which is already emotive in its content, so it’s a really good case study and demonstration for us.”

Visitors will be accompanied through the exhibition by Sennheiser’s guidePORT system, as they were for David Bowie Is…. GuidePORT can deliver hundreds of personal, automatically triggered stereo feeds simultaneously, and will transmit real-time, lip-sync audio to fully immerse visitors in the sights and sounds of the period. The V&A implementation will comprise 750 receiver units with premium headphones (though Daniel didn’t know which models at the time), along with several transmission and trigger units, hidden from the public eye.

David Bowie Is has been on tour ever since the March 2013 V&A launch: it’s visited Toronto, Sao Paolo, Chicago, Melbourne, the Netherlands and is about to open in Tokyo. Daniel remarks, “If [Records and Rebels] is successful, I would love it to go on tour – but that is the V&A’s decision.”

Is Daniel a big fan of music from the era? “I would have loved to have been alive at that time. I’m a big fan of Zappa, Hendrix, Bob Dylan. I play guitar and piano – but I have more passion than talent!”

Sennheiser to open Soundscape Showroom in the Westfield World Trade Center

“Daniel and Andreas Sennheiser who run the blossoming Sennheiser company, an audio business based in Germany. (CHRISTIAN BURKERT)”
BY
EBENEZER SAMUEL
NEW YORK DAILY NEWS
Monday, October 3, 2016, 2:47 PM
“Daniel Sennheiser knows exactly what he’s up against.

Along with his brother Andreas, Daniel Sennheiser runs the blossoming Sennheiser company, a blossoming audio business based in Germany. But he’s watched and admired New York City for a long time, come to appreciate the business challenges of the Big Apple.

And along the way, Sennheiser says, he’s come to view New York City as a pivotal battleground for any business ready to go global.

“New York has been the beginning of a lot of things,” Sennheiser says. “This is a melting pot, that has brought up so many things, brought up Broadway. New York is very fast-living. And that’s positive in a sense that they’re quick to pick up new trends and things.
“But that also means you need to make a certain amount of noise.”

And now, it’s time for Sennheiser to make some noise. In late October, the company will take up residence in the Big Apple, opening the Sennheiser Soundscape Showroom in the Westfield World Trade Center.

It’s a venue that will be filled with Sennheiser’s unique products, but the focus isn’t on selling. Instead, Sennheiser is focused on introducing New Yorkers to its distinctive audio, part of a first step in establishing the company as a sound powerhouse in a nation that’s spent the last few years in the midst of a great headphone awakening.

“We believe it’s the right time for us to make a big splash to share our version of the future of audio with New York,” says Andreas.

It’s an intriguing vision from a company that’s long delivered high-quality sound but has consistently lacked the profile of the bigger names in the industry. Beats by Dre and Bose own the majority of U.S. mindshare, and both companies are highly visible, utilized by both celebrities and major sports franchises.
Sennheiser has never had such presence, and that’s mostly by choice. Look closely during your next NBA on TNT broadcast, and you may notice Sennheiser headsets on the play-by-play guys. But the company has historically done little marketing, preferring to let its devices shine on their own merits.

The Soundscape Showroom isn’t the start of some massive ad campaign, either. But it is part of a company-wide initiative to be more visible in the United States, to draw more notice to an underrated line of products. Just a few years ago, the company set up a small pop-up store on the East Side. With the Soundscape Showroom, it’s going bigger, aiming to be a national presence.

“It’s to raise a little awareness. We’re just not present enough,” Daniel says, before talking proudly of Sennheiser’s lore. “Sennheiser is the inventor of the hi-fi headphone. Not a lot of people know that.”

Indeed, few realize just how potent Sennheiser products truly are. It was Sennheiser that released the first pair of open headphones way back in 1968, and it’s Sennheiser that’s continued to chase perfect, pure sound throughout the last few decades.

And it’s Sennheiser that last year debuted the HE1 Orpheus, a handcrafted set of headphones powered by a massive amplifier built from marble and driven by gold-vaporized electrodes and platinum vaporized-diaphragms. It’s a device that costs tens of thousands of dollars and is hardly for use with your iPad on the train – but it’s a device that showcases Sennheiser’s pursuit of high-level sound.

“Sennheiser has been on the forefront of audio strategy for years,” says Daniel. “We just added the sexy aesthetics after we did the sound.”

Sound remains the company’s top priority, but in recent years, it’s been pushing to match the more attractive headphones delivered by the likes of Beats and Bose. There’s the Momentum line of headphones, a sharp-looking line of headphones with rugged leather bands that seem tailor made for the stylish Manhattanite.

And just this summer, Sennheiser released the PXC 550, a noise-canceling Bluetooth pair of cans designed to go head-to-head with Bose’s QuietComfort line, but with touch controls built onto the earcups.
These products, says Daniel Sennheiser, are examples of Sennheiser’s ability to adapt to culture, proof that the company’s products truly can fit the New Yorker. The Sennheiser aesthetic is unique, and the Momentums are especially eye-catching units, as fashion-conscious as they come.

The hope is that consumers enter the Soundscape Showroom and see these products, falling in love with a new brand of headphone.

“The qualities (of Sennheiser headphones) are great — the material, the leather, the steal,” Daniel says. “But you also have to have the opportunity to touch it. In our experience, audio is something you can’t describe. You have to put it on your head.

“Sennheiser is not a brand for everyone. I think we’re a brand for people who are in the know, who are creative, who really look for special things. That’s why I think a place like New York is the place to be.”

And that’s precisely why Sennheiser is finally here, with the Soundscape Showroom as its first truly potent portal in the United States. The goal is to build from here, Andreas says, to finally aggressively cultivate the Sennheiser brand in the U.S.

It won’t be easy, not with Beats and Bose dominant. But Sennheiser arrives prepared.

“We have a serious plan, but we’re also nimble enough to adjust,” says Daniel. “As Frank Sinatra said, ‘If you can make it here, you can make it everywhere.'”

MY HOME AWAY FROM HOME

Jon Hammond: Die Musikmesse. Jahr als The Jon Hammond Show — Music, Travel and Soft News präsentiert.

Mal in Folge.

2017 ProLight + Sound and Musikmesse Kicking Off with Jon Hammond Next April

Dankeschön Johannes Weber and Ilona Schlesinger-Jakoby for the Press Release & New Poster – also Natalia Kryukova Prolight + Sound NAMM Russia 2017

“news +++ Prolight + Sound

Prolight + Sound 2017 continues on its successful course
following recent conceptual developments

Attractive setting for product presentations, business and recruiting

Comprehensive overview of the sector in the eastern part of Frankfurt Fair and Exhibition Centre”

Johannes Weber, Christopher Sparkes and Jon Hammond

“Prolight + Sound has been strengthened by the recent conceptual developments and will maintain and continue to develop the new components for the next edition in 2017. Thus, from 4 to 7 April 2017, the International Fair of Technologies and Services for Entertainment, Integrated Systems and Creation will once again be the meeting place for the industry and the showcase for the latest products and trends in the sector. By moving to the eastern part of Frankfurt Fair and Exhibition Centre in 2016, the fair was able to expand the spectrum of products and services on show and, as in the past, all key players will be represented at Prolight + Sound 2017, many of them with even bigger presentations than before. The shift in the days of opening to Tuesday to Friday was given a positive reception this year and will be retained next year. A wide-ranging seminar programme covering all business segments will be held on all four days of the fair. A special focal point of Prolight + Sound 2017 will be on promoting young people and creating areas of contact between companies and skilled personnel.

“With the highly successful première of the new concept, we executed a decisive change in course for the future of Prolight + Sound as the world’s foremost business platform and showcase for the sector”, says Michael Biwer, Group Show Director of the Entertainment, Media & Creative Industries Business Unit of Messe Frankfurt Exhibition GmbH. “In close cooperation with companies from the sector, we aim to continue this success story at the coming Prolight + Sound and further optimise the fair in the future.”

High degree of exhibitor interest sends out positive signals

Prolight + Sound visitors have the chance to obtain an unrivalled overview of the latest products, trends and technologies on the global market. The leading brands of all branches of the event-technology industry have already registered to exhibit at the coming Prolight + Sound. The key players that have confirmed their participation in the event include Adam Hall, Altman, Amptown, Audio-Technica, Ayrton, Chain Master, Chauvet, Clay Paky, Coda Audio, dbTechnologies, Digico, DPA Microphones, ETC – Electronic Theatre Controls, FBT Elettronica, Gerriets, GLP German Light Products, JB-Lighting, Klotz, L-Acoustics, Lawo, MA Lighting, Martin Professional, Meyer Sound, Monacor International, Music & Lights, nivtec-flexibel, Panasonic, Prolyte Group, Riedel, ROBE Lighting, Sennheiser and SGM Light. Additionally, Georg Neumann GmbH will have its own stand at Prolight + Sound 2017.

Unchanged hall layout, optimised visitor orientation

The seven exhibition halls and the extensive outdoor exhibition area in the eastern section of Frankfurt Fair and Exhibition Centre provide the space required for the targeted presentation of the individual product groups. Prolight + Sound is split into the following sections: Audio + Sound (Hall 3.1, Hall 4.1), Light + Stage (Hall 3.0), Light + Multimedia (Hall 4.0), Light + Entertainment (Hall 5.0) and Education + Associations (Forum.0). Additionally, the outdoor exhibition space makes it possible to demonstrate new products under realistic, open-air conditions. In 2017, the Concert Sound Arena, which presents PA systems in action, will be centrally located on the Agora, in the heart of the eastern section. At the same time, the Live Sound Arena, close to the City entrance, will showcase mobile PA systems. Also on the outdoor area will be mobile stages, tent systems and LED walls.

An improved visitor-guidance system compared to last year will make it easier for visitors to find the individual product groups. Moreover, there will be separate, clearly laid-out brochures for ‘special interest’ product groups, which bring together the appropriate exhibitors from the various segments. These ‘Quickfinders’ will be available for the ‘Broadcast, Production & Recording’, ‘Stage & Theatre’, ‘Media Technology & System Integration’ and ‘Event & Congress’ product segments. Exhibitors from the individual ‘special interest’ segments can also be found directly via the online search engine of the Prolight + Sound website and the Prolight + Sound app.

High-grade seminar programme with broad thematic spectrum

The shift to four workdays enabled Prolight + Sound to further hone its profile as the fair for professionals and, in the course of this process, to extend the range of professional-development events to all four days. Next year, as in the past, renowned speakers will pass on expertise revolving around technical innovations, new areas of application and marketing and management.

The professional-development programme is split into three seminar blocks. The Prolight + Sound Conference is characterised by a wide spectrum of disciplines covering all aspects of professional event and AV media technology. The conference has two main sections, Basic and Advanced, and is aimed at both newcomers and experienced personnel. It offers an opportunity to refresh the basics, learn from experts and exchange ideas and information with colleagues. The second block, the Eventplaza Conference, will be held for the seventh year running. Aimed in particular at event and incentive managers, HR managers and congress and conference organisers, it tackles subjects such as event safety, progressive event production and effective event communication. The third seminar block, the Manufacturers’ Forum was launched at the last Prolight + Sound and is to be continued in 2017. There, leading companies from the sector present technological trends with reference to specific projects.

Prolight + Sound brings together companies and young people

Against the background of continuous growth in demand for well-trained personnel, Prolight + Sound offers a range of special services for students and trainees. Additionally, there will be a new area to promote contacts between companies wanting to recruit new staff and newcomers and experienced personnel looking for new jobs.

In line with this, the Tuesday of the fair will take place under the motto Future Talents Day and include an attractive programme for young and aspiring personnel with guided tours of the fair, special lectures and workshops. The Job Forum in Forum.0 is a platform that puts companies wanting to recruit staff from the event and media-technology sector in touch with suitable applicants. It represents a point of contact for all visitors interested in taking up new challenges in the sector.

Renowned awards spotlight outstanding achievements

Successful projects are the result of a perfect partnership between man and technology. Prolight + Sound is the venue for important award ceremonies, which draw attention to outstanding achievements in the field of event and media technology.
Opus – German Stage Award – has been given for excellent achievements in the fields of lighting design, technical realisation, stage design, video and sound design since 2002. It is one of the most important awards for the creative use of professional event technology. A new set of rules for 2017 now makes it possible to select individual and team achievements. In other words, the winners can be personalities, project teams or companies. Parallel to Opus, Sinus – System Integrations Award – honours projects distinguished by the innovative and pioneering use of media technology and systems integration. The sponsors of this honorary award are Messe Frankfurt, the The German Entertainment Technology Association (Verband der Medien- und Veranstaltungstechnik – VPLT) and the European Association of Event Centers (Europäischer Verband der Veranstaltungs-Centren – EVVC). The expert jury is composed of members of the associations, experts from the sector and representatives of the media and Messe Frankfurt. The awards will be presented in ‘Saal Europa’ of Frankfurt Fair and Exhibition Centre on 5 April 2017.

Three-day overlap with Musikmesse

Together with Musikmesse, International Trade Fair for Musical Instruments, Sheet Music, Music Production and Music Business Connections, Prolight + Sound represents the world’s biggest get-together for the music and event industry. Changing the days of Musikmesse to Wednesday to Sunday means the valuable synergistic effects between the two events will be strengthened compared to 2016 with Musikmesse and Prolight + Sound being held concurrently on three days. Altogether, the two trade fairs attracted well over 100,000 visitors from 130 countries and around 2,000 exhibitors from 60 countries in 2016.

MY HOME AWAY FROM HOME

Jon Hammond: Die Musikmesse. Jahr als The Jon Hammond Show — Music, Travel and Soft News präsentiert.

Mal in Folge.

ENCORES: Louisville Kentucky Jazz Factory – JON HAMMOND Band Jazzin By Martin Z. Kasdan Jr. Last year San Francisco-based organist Jon Hammond joined his buddy, Louisville guitarist John Bishop, for a night at the Jazz Factory. Hammond has just released Late Rent, on Ham-Berger-Friz Records, available at http://www.cityhallrecords.com/artist/HAMMOND,%20JON.htm if you can’t find it locally. In an e-mail to me, Hammond described this as “a record that took me 25 years to put together. The disc opens with “Late Rent,” a loping swinger and is followed by “Pocket Funk,” with a slightly Latin feel. “Late Rent” is reprised in a live take at the end of the CD. Lee Morgan’s funky “The Sidewinder” is the only cover tune on the album, although, as Hammond acknowledges in his liner notes, “White Onions” is “a bluesy Hammond/Finnerty composition reminiscent of `Green Onions.’” In closing, happy holidaze to one and all. You can send greetings to me at mzkjr@yahoo.com

AFM Local 6 Member Profile JON HAMMOND: “WHERE’S THE GIG?” — by ALEX WALSH

https://afm6.org/member-profile/jon-hammond-wheres-the-gig/

Jon Hammond is a musician, composer, bandleader, publisher, journalist, TV show host, radio DJ, and multi-media entrepreneur. He currently travels the world, playing gigs and attending trade shows.

THE EARLY YEARS
Jon Hammond was born in Chicago in 1953. His father was a doctor and his mother was a housewife. They both played the piano. In 1957, his parents moved Jon and his four sisters to Berkeley, CA, where his father worked in a hospital as head of the emergency room. When he was nine, Jon started accordion lessons. “In those days, they had studios where parents would drop their kids off after school for tap dancing and accordion lessons. There were accordion bands and they would compete against each other.”

“Every time I see a musician walking down the street I say, ‘Hey, where’s the gig?’ Because it doesn’t matter what kind of music you play, if you’re carrying an instrument–going to a rehearsal, or coming back from a repair shop, whatever it is–we all need our gigs. And that’s what the union is all about. Hopefully, we can all keep working and be supportive of everybody’s gigs. There’s room for everybody.”

Jon played his first gig at a senior citizens luncheon when he was eleven. Not only did he get a free lunch but he was paid $25 –a lot of money in those days. Jon says his father was supportive, but did not want him to pursue a music career. “He told me that music was a great hobby. He got me a wonderful professional accordion for my Bar Mitzvah, directly from John Molinari, one of the greatest accordionists who ever lived. It was a Guilietti Professional Tone Chamber accordion. That’s the accordion I won Jr. Jazz Champion on in 1966.”

In high school, Jon attended a private boys school in San Francisco. He was a class clown, and when it got to the point where he was going to be expelled, Jon took his accordion and ran away from home. He immersed himself in the San Francisco music scene and started playing organ in several bands. By 1971 he was in a four piece rock group called Hades which shared a rehearsal space with Quicksilver Messenger Service. “I was friends with their manager, Ron Polte, who also managed guitarist John Cipollina. We got to open for his band, Copperhead.”

Jon continued to play gigs in the Bay Area in different configurations, including a few gigs with a young Eddie Money. By this time Jon had become frustrated with the Bay Area scene. One night while playing a biker bar he got into a fight and his band didn’t come to his defense. “That was the last straw. I was angry and I said I wasn’t coming back.”

Jon in the early 70s

Jon moved to Boston in 1973 to attend the Berklee School of Music. He also got a gig playing in Boston’s Combat Zone backing up burlesque shows. When Jon saw one of his idols, pianist Keith Jarrett play in New York he told him he was going to Berklee and asked him for advice. “Keith looked me right in the eye and said ‘Berklee can be very dangerous for your music.’ It was like he popped this huge bubble. Years later I came to understand what he was talking about. You have to learn the fundamentals, but the music itself comes from a much deeper place. They can’t teach that, you have to find it yourself.”

When Jon’s teachers began sitting in on his gigs in Boston, he questioned why he was in school if the teachers were coming to play with him. He quit school, moved to Cape Cod and started playing with bandleader Lou Colombo. “He did all the private parties for Tip O’Neill. We played what they used to call the business man’s beat. On the gig it was forbidden to swing. It was like swing cut in half. So if you tried to go with the four, Lou would say, ‘Don’t swing it, don’t swing it.’ He pounded it into my head night after night.”

LATE RENT

In 1981 Jon took a trip to Paris where he broke through his writers block and wrote some of his best music. He returned to New York with his new tunes and started a production company with the idea of getting a record deal for a friend that had played on a #1 hit record. After months of pounding the pavement with no results, Jon realized he had better work on his own music before his money ran out. He took the last of his savings, including his upcoming rent money, and went into the studio to record what came to be known as “The Late Rent Sessions”.

The session had Todd Anderson on tenor sax, Barry Finnerty on guitar, Stephen Ferrone on drums, and Jon on B3. They recorded at Intergalactic, the last studio that John Lennon recorded in. Jon had no luck getting a record deal for his new project, but he did get gigs in New York with his band Jon Hammond and the Late Rent Session Men.

Jon Hammond Band Onstage at NAMM, 2014: Joe Berger, Dom Famularo, Alex Budman, Koei Tanaka, Jon Hammond

n 1982, Jon found out about public access television and the idea that anyone could produce a show and get it on TV. He started broadcasting on Manhattan’s public station in 1984. “I decided I was going to produce a radio show on TV. The first episodes showed just my tapping foot and my voice. It was a gimmick. We had graphics that were synchronized to go with the music. It worked out well. People dug it.” Within a few weeks, Jon was interviewed and featured in Billboard Magazine. The Jon Hammond Show was considered an alternative to the clips on Cable TV. “MTV was still in its infancy. We had a concept that was revolutionary. My phone started ringing and we were the hot kids on the block.”

LIVING ABROAD

Jon continued to play gigs in New York and produce his TV show. In 1987, he went to his first trade show (NAMM) where he was introduced to Mr. Julio Guilietti, the man who built his accordion. He then began traveling to trade shows and making contacts with musicians and companies around the world, including Hammond Suzuki. “They gave me the Hammond XB-2, the first really powerful portable Hammond organ. Glenn Derringer, one of my all-time heroes, presented it to me. I got one of the first. Paul Shaffer from the Letterman Show got the other. At the time there was only one EXP-100 expression pedal–we had to share the pedal. I used the pedal for my gigs and when Paul needed it I would bring it over to him at 30 Rockefeller Center on my bicycle.”

In the early 90s, when his New York gigs began drying up, Jon was encouraged to go to Germany. “It was a hard time. My father had just died and there were very few gigs. I got the XB-2 organ right when I needed it, so I decided to take a chance. I bought a roundtrip ticket to Frankfurt with an open return. I went with 50 bucks and stayed for a year. When I came back, I had 100 bucks.”

Jon stayed at a friend’s house and played a borrowed accordion on the street until he could get a band together. “I played on the street until my fingers turned blue and would collect enough money to get some fish soup. After about two weeks I got a call—I had put a band together and had 3 gigs coming up. A TV show had heard my story and wanted to do a story on me. At the first gig 19 people came; the second only 15 people came. Then I got the little spot on TV. When I came to the third gig people were lined up down the street. When I walked up I thought they were having an art exhibit. When they said, ‘No, they’re waiting for you.’ I choked up, I couldn’t even talk. So I’ve been playing there every year since. The people in Germany really saved my musical career at a time when very few things were happening for me in New York or San Francisco. I have a really good following in Europe. I keep busy as a musician in the States, playing hospitals and assisted living places, but my band dates I pretty much play overseas.”

Jon’s Late Rent Sessions was eventually released on a German label and received modest airplay. During the 90s he travelled back and forth to Europe, spending a year playing gigs in Paris, and eventually settling in Hamburg. Since then he has released two more albums and has played gigs in Moscow, Shanghai, and Australia. With the help of the internet, Jon is able to produce his TV show anywhere.

PRESENT DAY

In the mid-2000s Jon produced Hammondcast, a radio program for CBS that aired in San Francisco at four in the morning and was rebroadcast before Oakland A’s games. “When the baseball games played in the afternoon, my show would play for about 20 minutes and then it was pre-empted. I had a lot of fun with that.” His guests included Danny Glover, Barry Melton from Country Joe & the Fish, and many local people. “It took me awhile to figure out that I had permission to broadcast anything I wanted. I could play the London Philharmonic or Stevie Wonder. My tag line was ‘Hello, Hello, Hello! Wake up or go back to sleep…’”

Today, Jon continues to visit tradeshows and is determined to keep doing everything he does as long as he can. “I made a pact with my longtime co-producer, guitarist Joe Berger, that we are going to go to these trade shows until we are little old men with canes.”

Scott Muni wiki https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scott_Muni

Scott Muni (May 10, 1930 – September 28, 2004, aged 74) was an American disc jockey, who worked at the heyday of the AM Top 40 format and then was a pioneer of FM progressive rock radio. Rolling Stone magazine termed him “legendary”
Born Donald Allen Muñoz in Wichita, Kansas, Muni grew up in New Orleans. He joined the United States Marine Corps and began broadcasting there in 1950, reading “Dear John” letters over Radio Guam. After leaving the Corps and having considered acting as a career, he began working as a disc jockey; in 1953 he began working at WSMB in New Orleans. His mentor was Marshall Pearce. In 1955 he began broadcasting at station WAKR in Akron, Ohio, and after that worked in Kankakee, Illinois.

Career[edit]
Muni then spent almost 50 years at stations in New York City. He became a Top 40 broadcaster at 570 WMCA in the late 1950s, just before the start of their “Good Guys” era, and did a number of record hops in the New York area. In 1960, he moved to rival Top 40 station 770 WABC. There he did an early evening show called “Scotland’s Yard” and was among the first WABC DJs to capture the attention of the teenage audience for which the station would become famous. He also participated in the competition to cover The Beatles on their first visits to the United States, and thus began a long association with them.

In 1965, Muni left WABC and ran the Rolling Stone Night Club while doing occasional fill-in work for WMCA. Muni had explored some opportunities beyond radio: for a short time he co-hosted a local weekly television show on WABC-TV 7 with Bruce “Cousin Brucie” Morrow, and he would go on to record the spoken single “Letter to an Unborn Child”, about a soldier with a premonition, which was released in 1967 to little acclaim.

Muni decided to return to radio, and in 1966, he joined 98.7 WOR-FM, one of the earliest stations in the country to program free-form Progressive Rock music. The progressive format did not last at that station. In 1967 Muni moved to 102.7 WNEW-FM, which had been running a format of pop hits and show tunes, hosted by an all-woman staff. This time, the Progressive Rock format really took hold, with WNEW-FM becoming a legendary rock station. Muni stayed there for three decades as the afternoon DJ and sometimes program director. Muni was described by fellow WNEW-FM DJ Dennis Elsas as “the heart and soul of the place”. Under assorted management changes during the 1990s WNEW-FM lost its way, and in 1998 Muni ended up hosting a one-hour noontime classic rock program at WAXQ “Q104.3”, where he worked until suffering a stroke in early 2004.

Muni’s low, gravelly voice was instantly recognizable and often lampooned, both by other disc jockeys and by impressionists such as on Imus in the Morning. He was often known to his listeners by the nicknames “Scottso” or “The Professor”, the latter to emphasize both his rock expertise and his age difference with most of his audience. While he sometimes spoke in roundabout phrases and succumbed to progressive rock radio clichés such as “That was a tasty cut from …”, he also conveyed on the air and in his professional relationships a gruff immediacy that was a by-product of both his time in the Marines and his earlier Top 40 skills.

A bizarre exchange occurred in August 1972 when a hostage-holding bank robber called Muni on the air and engaged him in a long, often nonsensical conversation; the two peppered their post-hippie speech with discussions of Bob Dylan music and requests to hear the Grateful Dead.

Muni specialized in playing records from up-and-coming, or sometimes just-plain-obscure, acts from the United Kingdom on his weekly Friday “Things from England” segment. He also hosted the syndicated radio programs Ticket to Ride and Scott Muni’s World of Rock.

Muni often referred to “we interviewed so and so,” making reference to himself and either “Black” Earl Douglas or another producer. Indeed, Muni was friendly with many of the musicians whom he played, and they would often stop by the studio to visit on-air. He played poker in the studio with the Grateful Dead, and he would let Emerson, Lake & Palmer browse the station’s huge record library and put on whatever they liked. An oft-related story tells that he was interviewing Jimmy Page when the guitarist suddenly passed out from the aftereffects of the Led Zeppelin lifestyle. Muni calmly put on a record, revived Page, and completed the interview on the studio floor.

Muni was close to John Lennon and his family, and after Lennon’s murder he vowed to always open his show with a Lennon or Beatles record, a pledge that he kept for the balance of his career.

In addition to radio broadcasting, Muni also did voice-over work for radio and television; the most known were a commercial for Rolaids antacid (“How do you spell relief?”) and promos for Monday Night Football. His voice is also heard giving the introduction on the 1971 live albums Chicago at Carnegie Hall and Melanie at Carnegie Hall.

Muni also voiced many Radio & TV commercials such as Rolaids, JCPenney, Ricoh, etc. He also voiced episodes of NBC’s Friday Night Videos during 1985-86 and also voiced promos for ABC Sports which included boxing events on Wide World of Sports as well as Monday Night Football, the USFL on ABC, the Pro Bowlers Tour, the Sugar Bowl, the 1994 Stanley Cup Playoffs & Auto Racing including the Indy 500.

Personal life[edit]
Muni had three children with his first wife and two with his second wife, to whom he was married from 1966 until his death in 2004.

Death and legacy[edit]
He died on September 28, 2004 at the age of 74 in New York City and is buried in St. Gertrude’s Roman Catholic Cemetery in Colonia, New Jersey. Muni is included in an exhibit display of important disc jockeys at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The DJs at Q104.3 keep Muni’s promise to New York listeners and still start their noon hour with the “12 o’clock Beatles Block”.

Muni was inducted into the Rock Radio Hall of Fame in the Legends of Rock Radio-Programming” category for his work at WNEW in 2014.

Albert Richard “Jazzbo” Collins (January 4, 1919 – September 30, 1997) was an American disc jockey, radio personality and recording artist who was briefly the host of NBC television’s Tonight show in 1957.
Al “Jazzbo” Collins
Al “Jazzbeaux” Collins
Born Albert Richard Collins
January 4, 1919
Rochester, New York
Died September 30, 1997 (aged 78)
Marin County, California
Born in Rochester, New York in 1919,[1] Collins grew up on Long Island, New York. In 1941, while attending the University of Miami in Florida, he substituted as the announcer on his English teacher’s campus radio program, and decided he wanted to be in radio. Collins began his professional career as the disc jockey at a bluegrass station in Logan, West Virginia; by 1943, he was at WKPA in Pittsburgh, moving in 1945 to WIND in Chicago and in 1946 to Salt Lake City’s KNAK. In 1950, he relocated to New York where he joined the staff of WNEW and became one of the “communicators” on NBC’s Monitor when it began in 1955.

Collins made several appearances on The Tonight Show with Steve Allen in the early 50s (and even briefly took over the show after Allen’s departure; see below). In 1953, Allen adapted several nursery rhymes (including Little Red Riding Hood) into jazz-flavoured recitations, with Collins on vocals and Lou Stein on piano.

“Jazzbo”
The name “Jazzbo” derived from a product Collins had seen, a clip-on bowtie named Jazzbows. Just as Martin Block created the illusion that he was speaking from the Make Believe Ballroom, Collins claimed to be broadcasting from his inner sanctum, a place known as the Purple Grotto, an imaginary setting suggested by radio station WNEW’s interior design, as Collins explained:

I started my broadcast in Studio One which was painted all kinds of tints and shades of purple on huge polycylindricals which were vertically placed around the walls of the room to deflect the sound. It just happened to be that way. And with the turntables and desk and console and the lights turned down low, it had a very cavelike appearance to my imagination. So I got on the air, and the first thing I said was, “Hi, it’s Jazzbo in the Purple Grotto.” You never know where your thoughts are coming from, but the way it came out was that I was in a grotto, in this atmosphere with stalagtites and a lake and no telephones. I was using Nat Cole underneath me with “Easy Listening Blues” playing piano in the background.
The Tonight Show and later work
In 1957, NBC-TV installed him for five weeks as the host of the Tonight show when it was known as Tonight! America After Dark in the period between hosts Steve Allen and Jack Paar.[2]

Also in 1957, Collins starred in (as himself) an episode of NBC radio’s science fiction radio series X Minus One. By 1959, he was with KSFO in San Francisco, hanging out with the beatnik hipsters in North Beach. On-air, Jazzbo would say that he was broadcasting “from the purpleness of the Grotto”, often mentioning his assistant “Harrison, the long-tailed purple Tasmanian owl”. On the TV side, Collins hosted “The Al Collins Show,” that aired mornings on KGO-TV. The format included light talk and guest appearances by local celebrities such as Moe Howard of The Three Stooges. Later in the 1960s, he was the host of Jazz for the Asking (VOA), and he worked with several Los Angeles stations during the late in the decade: KMET (1966), KFI (1967) and KGBS (1968).

He officially changed the spelling of his name to Jazzbeaux when he went to Pittsburgh’s WTAE in 1969. He moved to WIXZ in Pittsburgh (1973) before heading back to the West Coast three years later. While in Pittsburgh, he briefly hosted a late night television show entitled “Jazzbeauxz (with a ‘z’) Rehearsal”, an eclectic sampling of anything that caught Collins’ interest at the time, including a long-running hard-boiled-egg spinning contest. He conducted the program from a barber chair, as he had on a previous TV show.

“Stinking badges”[edit]
A popular segment on his show was the “no stinkin’ badges” routine, a play on the famous exchange in the 1948 film The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. Al would politely request that the main guest for that day don a Mexican bandit costume, complete with ammo belts crossing the chest, six-guns in holsters, a huge sombrero and large fake mustache. The guest then had to pose in front of cameras and for the TV audience. With pistols pointing at the camera lens the guest had to say (with emphasis) “I don’t got to show you no stinkin’ badges.” If the guest did not say it with sufficient sinister tone Collins made him or her repeat it until in Al’s opinion the guest got it right.

1970s and beyond[edit]
In 1976 Al Collins returned to San Francisco, working at KMPX, followed by a three-year all-night run at KGO which drew callers throughout the West Coast; he always opened his program with Count Basie’s “Blues in Hoss Flat”. He also worked a late night shift at KKIS AM (in Pittsburg, California, ironically) in 1980. After a stint in New York and WNEW (1981), Jazzbo was back in San Francisco at KSFO (1983) and KFRC (1986). Then came one more run at WNEW (1986–90), then KAPX (Marin County, California) in 1990, and finally a weekly jazz show at KCSM (College of San Mateo, California) from 1993 to his death.

Al Collins died on September 30, 1997, at the age of 78, from pancreatic cancer.

Folks, something told me I had better get on down to see my main man Lou Colombo last week

in Fort Myers FL, I played on Lou’s band for 2.5 years in Cape Cod at the Wychmere Harbor Club

and Thompson’s Clam Bar in Harwich Port MA. It was an important time of my life and career and

he was always very generous to me, kept me on my toes throwing tunes at me in all keys the music

never stopped once we hit.

I just saw Lou a few days ago in Fort Myers FL at the gig he was playing at his Daughter Sherri’s restaurant

and hub Marc Neeley – Roadhouse Cafe, he was at the top of his game, playing great as ever and looking like a

million dollars. I am deeply saddened to receive terrible tragic news this morning from Lou’s fine trombonist

Nelson E. Foucht that Lou was tragically killed last night just 4 blocks from Roadhouse Cafe coming home from the

gig. My deepest condolences to the Colombo Family, Lou’s Wife Noel, daughters Lori, Sherri, David all his 6 kids, extended

Family of friends and musicians. I am totally blown away, thankful that I had the opportunity to know him and play with

him nightly back in the 70’s and then to see and hear him again at the end of his life, thanks Lou!

Here are some photos from just a few days taken by my long-time great girlfriend Jennifer and myself at his gig,

R.I.P. Big Lou – Louis Colombo the greatest trumpet player bandleader baseball slugger and golfer ever!

I used to go with Lou to the golf course where he had the snack concession in Yarmouth just to watch him drive

balls in to outer space. I couldn’t believe how far and hard he could hit the ball. Lou would put on black

executioner gloves and hit the ball and it would disappear, just keep on sailing in to the sky like Lou’s spirit

must be now. His music and great memories will live on forever.

Sincerely,

Jon Hammond – Member AFM Local 802 and Local 6 Musicians Union

*Note: Lou’s band the other night at Roadhouse Cafe were so great, I’m so sorry cats:

Nelson Foucht on trombone, F.L. “Woody” Brubaker piano and keyboard bass, Richard Iannuzzi drums and Gil DiBenedetto tenor saxophone and clarinet.

Jon Hammond and Lou Colombo

**Note: Lou Colombo and my neighbor Leo Ball (R.I.P.) also a fine trumpet player member of Local 802 were born on the same day in Brockton MA

*Note: Lou called me on my cell phone when I was at the airport just about to fly out of Tampa TPA Airport, he told me he really dug

my album that I had given him “NDR SESSIONS Projekt” my first record of mostly standards, it was inspired much by him actually. Lou

was talking about the horn players on it, Lutz Buechner and Joe “Jo” Gallardo, he really dug them and he told me we were going to do

something back up in the Cape for sure. I was very touched by his call and he had called me on my previous birthday last year, I got

all choked up when he told me that. Thanks a million Lou!
