Additional Musical Category Notes:

This new release from Jon Hammond marks his move into mainstream jazz. Utilizing the famous NDR Orchestra and Studios in Hamburg, Germany, Jon has crafted an excellent organ jazz record utilizing drums, sax and trombone. Outstanding support from saxophone soloist Lutz Buchner adds a lyrical modern jazz sound to the recordings. Excellent drumming by Heinz Lichius and the soulful sound of Joe Gallardo on trombone round out the disc. Great classic tunes are covered, along with some originals, including “My One and Only Love,” “Skylark,” “Besame Mucho,” “Blues In The Night” and “No X-Cess Baggage Blues.”

MY HOME AWAY FROM HOME

Jon Hammond: Die Musikmesse. Jahr als The Jon Hammond Show — Music, Travel and Soft News präsentiert.

Mal in Folge.

— Interview: Detlef Kinsler

Jon Hammond jams at the Electro-Voice stand: AMAC 2014 http://www.electrovoice.com/pressrelease.php?id=1651 The music products industry gathered again on Queensland’s Gold Coast for professional development sessions and a two-day trade show. Almost 500 professionals, covering a wide range of Australian music industry suppliers and retailers, took part at the Australian Music Association Convention – held at the ever-popular Jupiter’s Casino.

The convention featured a number of notable key speakers and accomplished musicians to keep attendees educated as well as entertained. Amongst the key figures were Larry Morton, current NAMM Chairman and President of Hal Leonard Corporation; Jon Hammond, renowned Hammond organ player and founder of the Jon Hammond Band; Ambre Hammond (no-relation to Jon) leading Australian piano musician and Guinness record holder for receiving Associate and Licentiate Diplomas of music at the age of 11; and Lloyd Spiegel, one of Australia’s leading blues guitarists.

Bosch Communications Systems, a regular at AMAC, exhibited the latest products from our Electro-Voice and Dynacord brands, including EV’s ZLX, ELX and ETX Powered Loudspeaker families, and Dynacord’s TS Vertical Array Cabinets, the tiny but feature-packed PM 502 Powered Mixer, and the versatile AXM 12A Coaxial Powered Monitor with onboard DSP.

For the first time in EV’s history, the brand had three “best-in-class” loudspeaker families on display covering entry-level through to pro-audio markets. ZLX loudspeakers are the number one selling powered speakers in the American market and have won Best of Show at NAMM 2013. The 2000-W ETX Powered Loudspeakers have been labelled as the most advanced product in its price range and have won Best of Show at NAMM 2014. Sitting in between is the ever-popular ELX range which represents a high-quality sound system at a mid-range price.

The ETX Powered Loudspeaker display drew a lot of attention during the show, including that of Jon Hammond, one of the finest B3 players in the world. Jon reminisced about his first experience with EV speakers back in 1964, when he installed EV SRO speakers in a Fender Bandmaster cabinet.

“I have a particular fondness for EV speakers. My very first pro amplifier was a 1964 blonde Fender Bandmaster in which I installed the white EV SRO Speakers. Yes, I lugged that 2 x 12 speaker box around everywhere and it was impossible to blow it up – my whole band would plug in to it, we thought in those days because the amp was called the Bandmaster that the whole band should plug in to it, bass and all – no problem, it was loud and clear!”

After swapping a few stories Jon was curious to see how his Hammond Sk1 would sound with the ETX loudspeakers. Following a quick connection via a Dynacord PowerMate 600, Jon belted a few tunes just before the close of day one of the exhibition. He promised to come back the following day with a jazz guitarist who turned out to be Chris Connolly, a well known figure in the audio and music products industry. While setting up for the jam session Simon Ert, a jazz percussionist representing Gretsch drums on the neighbouring stand, volunteered to complete the trio. What followed was half an hour of cool jazz tunes and sweet sound.

Group photo, from left to right: Simon Ert on Gretsch Drums, Chris Connolly on Grover Jackson Guitar and the legendary “Buchanan Hammer” EV 664 Dynamic Cardioid Microphone, and Jon Hammond on Hammond Sk1, mixed using Dynacord PowerMate 600 and played through ETX Powered Loudspeakers.

Check out an excerpt of the performance on YouTube:

http://youtu.be/SPHi-VBY6zI

“I love coming to the AMAC shows, in just a few years I have forged some lasting friendships and am fortunate enough to meet some really outstanding musicians,” said Jon. “The timing was perfect to have a session like that what we did – thank you so much for accommodating us with the superb EV powered speakers. I heard from friends who were all the way across the hall that they could hear us clear as a bell. It was so much fun, that’s the kind of thing I live for and only happens in a special place and people such as the EV stand at AMAC!”

Electro-Voice speakers were also present on the Casio Sound Technology stand. Two ZLX 12” powered speakers and a ZXA1 sub gave the Casio guys all they needed to show off their DJ and keyboard skills a few times each day. Needless to say, they were very happy with the sound as well.

Bosch Communications would like to thank AMAC, Jon Hammond, Chris Connolly, Simon Ert, and all the visitors and exhibitors for making AMAC 2014 an experience to remember!

Jon Hammond visit with his piano teacher Tony Germain:
“So good to see my piano teacher main man Tony Germain 40 years later from the first day we met on Scheduling Day 1973, looking good Tony! Greatest piano and Hammond organ teacher folks!

Tony taught so many players well and created the organ department (long story!) Chairing the PIano Department, (he has a nice chair in his office and superb Steinway Grand Piano) – if you are lucky enough to be a student at Berklee and get to study with Tony Germain, then you are living under the lucky star – Tony is the Man!! Thanks for everything you showed me Tony, straightened me out big time” – Jon Hammond
*Return of the Student –

Here I am with my Piano Teacher main man Tony Germain 40 years to the day later from the first time we sat down together folks – interview coming soon, many thanks Tony! Jon Hammond
http://www.berklee.edu/people/tony-germain
Position: Assistant Chair
Department: Piano

Tony’s Steinway Grand Piano

“I think I might have been one of Berklee’s first graduates with what today is called the performance major in piano. So as assistant chair, I have a vested interest in making sure we’re still preparing piano, keyboard, and organ students, without being in any way style prejudiced. I also took the position to have a little bit more involvement with the curriculum—to see what I could personally add or help create.”

“When I went to Berklee, Ted Pease, Phil Wilson, and Mike Rendish were my role models and my teachers. They set the standard for what I’d become and how I would teach. They were all very good to me, and I could see how much they loved it. Here at Berklee, I’m giving back to something that has given me everything. I often describe Berklee as a musical Fantasy Island. I just don’t know where else I’d be happy.”

“Prior to becoming assistant chair of the Piano Department, I taught pretty much everything across the board for 33 years: harmony, ear training, arranging, ensembles. I created the Harmonic Ear Training course and taught it from about 1978 until I became assistant chair. I’m equally in love with private and classroom teaching, and have done it all my adult life. I probably get more out of it than my students do. But hopefully I inspire students to further their interests in whichever style of performance they desire—it’s my job to prepare them for the long haul. I still teach Survey of Piano Styles: History of Jazz Piano. I didn’t want to give it up. And I didn’t want to not teach entirely, because you lose touch if you’re out of the classroom.”

MY HOME AWAY FROM HOME

Jon Hammond: Die Musikmesse. Jahr als The Jon Hammond Show — Music, Travel and Soft News präsentiert.

Mal in Folge.

— Interview: Detlef Kinsler

musician, singer-songwriter, record producer, and multi-instrumentalist. A child prodigy, he has become one of the most creative and loved musical performers of the late 20th century.[2] Wonder signed with Motown’s Tamla label at the age of eleven[2] and continues to perform and record for Motown as of the early 2010s. He has been blind since shortly after birth.[3]
Among Wonder’s works are singles such as “Superstition”, “Sir Duke”, “You Are the Sunshine of My Life” and “I Just Called to Say I Love You”; and albums such as Talking Book, Innervisions and Songs in the Key of Life.[2] He has recorded more than thirty U.S. top ten hits and received twenty-two Grammy Awards, the most ever awarded to a male solo artist, and has sold over 100 million albums and singles, making him one of the top 60 best-selling music artists.[4] Wonder is also noted for his work as an activist for political causes, including his 1980 campaign to make Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday a holiday in the United States.[5] In 2009, Wonder was named a United Nations Messenger of Peace.[6] In 2008, Billboard magazine released a list of the Hot 100 All-Time Top Artists to celebrate the US singles chart’s fiftieth anniversary, with Wonder at number five…cont. — with Stevie Wonder at NAMM Anaheim Convention Center

Oakland CA — Leon Russell on the gig at Yoshi’s with his custom piano rig – Jon Hammond

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leon_Russell
Leon Russell (born Claude Russell Bridges April 2, 1942) is an American musician and songwriter, who has recorded as a session musician, sideman, and maintained a solo career in music.
Claude Russell Bridges
Also known as Hank Wilson
Born April 2, 1942 (age 72)
Lawton, Oklahoma, United States
Genres Country, rock, folk, rhythm and blues, folk rock, blues rock
Occupations Musician, singer-songwriter
Instruments Vocals, piano, organ, guitar, bass guitar, mandolin
Born in Lawton, Oklahoma,[2] United States, he began playing piano at the age of four. Russell attended Will Rogers High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma. At this time he was already performing at Tulsa nightclubs.[3] After moving to Los Angeles, he became a session musician, working as a pianist on the recordings of many notable musical artists from the 1960s. By the late 1960s, Russell diversified, becoming successful as an arranger[4] and songwriter. As a musician, he worked his way up from gigs as a sideman to well known performers. By 1970 he had graduated to solo recording artist, although he never ended his previous roles within the music industry.
Russell was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on Monday, March 14, 2011.
Russell began his musical career at the age of 14 in the nightclubs of Tulsa, Oklahoma. He and his group The Starlighters, which included J.J. Cale, Leo Feathers, Chuck Blackwell and Johnny Williams,[6] were instrumental in creating the style of music known as the Tulsa Sound. After settling in Los Angeles, he studied guitar with James Burton. Known mostly as a session musician early in his career, as a solo artist he has crossed genres to include rock and roll, blues, and gospel music, playing with artists as varied as Jan & Dean, Gary Lewis, George Harrison, Gram Parsons, Delaney Bramlett, Ringo Starr, Doris Day, Elton John, Ray Charles, Eric Clapton, The Byrds, The Beach Boys, The Ventures, Willie Nelson, Badfinger, Tijuana Brass, Frank Sinatra, The Band, Bob Dylan, J.J. Cale, B.B. King,[7] Dave Mason, Glen Campbell, Joe Cocker and The Rolling Stones.[8]

As a first call studio musician in Los Angeles, Russell played on many of the most popular songs of the 1960s, including some by The Byrds, Gary Lewis and the Playboys, Bobby “Boris” Pickett, and Herb Alpert. He can be seen in 1964’s T.A.M.I. Show, playing piano with “The Wrecking Crew” (an informal name for the top L.A. session musicians of the 1960s), sporting short, dark, slicked-back hair, in contrast to his later look.[8] Soon after, he was hired as Snuff Garrett’s assistant/creative developer, playing on numerous #1 singles, including “This Diamond Ring” by Gary Lewis and the Playboys.[4] He wrote or co-wrote two hit songs for Gary Lewis and Playboys: “Everybody Loves a Clown” (which hit the Billboard Top 40 on October 9, 1965, remaining on the chart for eight weeks and rising to number 4) and “She’s Just My Style” (which hit Billboard′s Top 40 on December 18, 1965, and rose to number 3).[9] He played xylophone and bells on the 1966 single “The Joker Went Wild”, sung by Brian Hyland and penned by Bobby Russell (no relation to Leon). He also worked sessions with Dorsey Burnette and Glen Campbell on Campbell’s 1967 album Gentle on My Mind, where he was credited as “Russell Bridges” on piano,[citation needed] and arranged and conducted the 1966 easy listening album Rhapsodies for Young Lovers by the Midnight String Quartet.

Jon Hammond

Who is Jon Hammond?

Jon began his musical career at age 12 in the San Francisco Bay Area playing organ and accordion in bands and solo engagements, first recording studio dates 1968 when he met Robert Moog who personally delivered the Moog III to San Francisco Radical Laboratories where Jon was working at the time and jamming daily with members of Quicksilver Messenger Service, he next joined original rock band Hades with which he played until moving East to attend Berklee.

Playing 7 nights a week in Boston’s notorious Combat Zone next lead to touring with successful show band Easy Living and then became house organist at the exclusive Wychmere Harbor Club Cape Cod MA where he played private parties for Tip O’Neill Speaker of The House. Returning to SF for a reunion concert in 1980 with Eddie Money and members of Tower of Power, next Jon moved to Europe where he lived and played for a number of years, still playing annually where he has an enthusiastic following. Jon began hosting his own TV show “The Jon Hammond Show” in 1984 and is now in 30th year on cable TV in Manhattan and heard daily on KYOU Radio HammondCast Show with regular appearances at international trade shows.
